The Capitol Arts Alliance is pleased to welcome Kentucky native Jonell Mosser home to the Capitol Arts Theatre on September 16, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. to share her genuine, soulful sound as she celebrates the release of her fifth solo album, Fortunes Lost, Fortunes Told.

Jonell started singing at a young age in her childhood home of Louisville, brought up with her mother’s love of jazz and big band. She attended Western Kentucky University, but dropped out to pursue her musical career. She was in the Ken Smith Band and a couple of all-female acts before meeting first husband John Cowan, lead singer of the New Grass Revival, and moving to Nashville.

She worked closely with Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was and cut a record including a version of the Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love,” which landed on the soundtrack for the 1998 film “Hope Floats”, starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. She has since kept busy with side projects including the band Kentucky Thunder and being one of the Freedom Singers, as well as continuing to release solo albums, each conveying her strength and sophistication as a vocalist.

Jonell has a powerful voice and has been compared to Janis Joplin while still conveying the finesse of folk, jazz and Southern soul. She has been asked to sing backup vocals for such artists as B.B. King, Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Wynona, Vince Gill, and Waylon Jennings, yet she remains one of the industry’s best-kept secrets as a solo artist. The Capitol Arts Alliance is excited to welcome Jonell back to Bowling Green and to showcase her fabulous talent.

Before I had a child I had only heard of the “Lil’ Angels Attic Consignment Sale.” After my child was born, I experienced it. Whoa! This is maybe one of the coolest and craziest events that is totally shopping based in Bowling Green. Right now, Lil’ Angels Attic is calling for Volunteers! If you have a friend who is not selling, but would love to shop their pre-sale, anyone who volunteers a 3 hour shift to Lil’ Angels Attic can shop their pre-sale. Lil Angels Attic donates the profits from their sale to local charities and ministries. Since it’s inception in 2002, they have donated over $500,000 in cash and merchandise to various organizations. They also pick one charity each sale to be their Heaven Cent charity, which donations are made specifically by asking each shopper as they check out to donate a dollar. This alone has raised $10,000 over the years. They also give gift certificates to city and county school resource centers for families to get needed items at the sale.

We sat down with Mark recently to talk about really what makes him tick as an artist and a woodworker. Where his work is really getting back to the roots of our culture and the hardwork that gave many of us the prized family pieces we have in our homes. When we started this venture we wanted to feature people like Mark. He and the many artisans, farmers and hardworking local store owners of our county are what make us wonderfully unique. Oil and coolant are critical to protecting your engine. Make sure you and your student know how to check the oil, and check it at every fill up. Check coolant level periodically to protect the engine from excessive heat and cold.

Know where the check engine light is on the dashboard. If the light goes on, have your vehicle checked by a mechanic to determine the cause of the warning. Often, these simple actions can avoid major repairs down the road. Make sure you and your student know how to change a tire and ensure that you have a quality jack and lug wrench in the car at all times. While we hope you never have to use them, occasionally road hazards may be unavoidable. Talk with your student about getting the car to a safe place before attempting to get out or change a roadside flat.

No youth sports team or competition should be without a first aid kit designed to treat the most common injuries and illnesses that might be encountered. Booth Fire and Safety can help you make sure your child or teenagers team is kept safe with a first aid kit or other products.

Match the contents to the sport: The type of first aid that may be required varies by sport. Because bruises, abrasions, and sprained ankles are more common in baseball, a baseball team’s first aid kit, for instance, needs to be stocked with cold packs, elastic bandages, and Band-Aids, while a track team’s kit needs to have plenty of supplies to treat blisters, abrasions, pulled muscles, and sprains. If your team is going to be in the sun, carry sunscreen; the cross-country coach needs to carry an allergy kit to manage bee stings.
Stock a realistic quantity: Be prepared to treat more than one child at an event. For younger children, remember to stock pediatric doses (in liquid form, if necessary).
Ensure ready access: First aid supplies should be placed where they are readily accessible, and marked clearly to allow rapid identification. Use Ziploc-type bags within the kit for extra materials and to sort your supplies. For instance, it is helpful to partition supplies into modules “for wound care,” “for an allergic reaction,” and so forth.
Protect against damage: Carry supplies in a watertight container designed to withstand years of rough handling and extremes in temperature, such as a plastic (Pelican case or Otter Box) or metal container equipped with a rubber O-ring gasket for a tight, waterproof seal.

In June B&J Gallery and Buy Local Bowling Green gave away a piece of art and American history with the Fort Knox Floor American Flag. Some are still available at B&J Gallery but the majority of flags are about to become harder to come by as Mr. Walkup will have his final Bowling Green Public show. It’s a piece of art that has a historical significance to Kentucky and our fighting in World War II. The flag is made of the Barrack floors of Ft. Knox. Here is a photo of one of those soldiers who trained at Ft. Knox during the era this floor was used:

The exhibit will be at the Farmers market in front of Hobby Lobby. The wood is all but gone. Look for Reids Livery and Winery, and he will be with them. “Thanks Bowling Green for 3+ years of fun and support. If more wood comes available I might be back in business but for now lets clean out the garage and get some flags to good homes,” said Russ Walkup.

Downtown Bowling Green has many attractions and the courthouse is not really a historically significant place on the Civil War trail through Bowling Green. However there is a marker there recognizing Warren County’s Chief Union Civil War Officers and also lists those who received the Confederate Medals of Honor in 1863.

Next to the marker is a beautiful tribute to soldiers from the area who served in other U.S. wars:

The Warren County Courthouse actually did not exist during the war but was built starting in 1867. Finished in 1869, it cost $125,000 to build and was the 3rd courthouse for Warren County. The courthouse still has the look it had when it opened in 1869. The original Victorian iron fence with limestone posts encloses the courthouse grounds. The interior of the courthouse has been majorly renovated but it’s nice to know the outside remains the same.

Now, rumor has it the courthouse was used for more than court proceedings. In it’s time it was a bit of a “social club.” Some local rumors say that lawyers in the past had crawled in the windows for late night card games. It also was the hub to find election results before we had so much access to information instantly.

Instructions for making Sticky Bun Latte:

+Add Butter Pecan Syrup

+Add Cinnamon Syrup or real Cinnamon

+Add Vanilla Syrup

+Mix the syrups up “Real Nice.”

+Grind Espresso or use Aero or French Press and draw the espresso into cup of syrup.

+Steam whole milk to 160 degrees. Let it sit a few seconds.

+Add milk and creative design.

+Serve!

Full disclosure, the sandwich above was fully consumed by yours truly and I must say, it impressed me. I am not a Vegan or Vegetarian but this is a meal I would order when out. It’s not a meat substitute because it’s so much more. The Bistro does well with this Sandwich that is filled with Portabella mushrooms, eggplant, roasted red peppers with sundried tomato pesto eoli.

A great restaurant to dine in, with great service, a great view from the patio and an optional menu for Vegans and Vegetarians.

We’ve often covered new scents and techniques they use in their process. Recently Labold and Sons Salvage delivered a new treasure to Candle Makers with vintage candle jars. To ensure lasting success, enough implants need to be placed to support the teeth, & the traditional ratio is one implant per tooth replaced. If the number of implants is limited in efforts to save the patient money, keep in mind implants that fail because there are not enough to securely hold the teeth in place can be even more costly in the long run. In these cases, instead of sacrificing the overall success of the procedure, we can avoid implant treatment altogether or alter the type of restoration according to the patient’s financial constraints.

To be straight up there isn’t much to see here in terms of actual things from the Civil War. Mainly due to the fact it’s still a functioning boatlanding. There is however a great exhibit displaying the images of the past hospital and what the soldiers went through health wise.

The Barren River was a major contributing factor to making Bowling Green a strategic location for both armies. The river offered a plentiful supply of fresh water for the troops and it was an ideal way to move men and supplies quickly and efficiently. This area was protected by the cannons of Fort Baker.

Nearby was one of several military hospitals located in the Bowling Green area. This hospital was used first by the CSA and then by the Federal Army. Bowling Green’s hospital was safely behind the battle lines, which made it a key spot for recovery for both armies. 65% of the men who died during the Civil War died due to illness (i.e. Typhoid, Measles, Malaria, Yellow Fever, Scurvy, Dysentery, Pneumonia and Flu).

The death toll of the Civil War was numbered in the 650,000 of both Confederate and Union Soldiers. The death toll from this war is larger than all other wars combined in the United States History even the inclusion of the Revolutionary war. Over 400,000 soldiers died from disease and illness, not war wounds.

Spencer’s CoffeeHouse Aeropress (Aeropress are available in store to drink or to take home):

The AeroPress is an easy way to brew a single cup of coffee with more richness and subtlety than a standard drip coffee maker. First off, begin boiling about 12 ounces of filtered water. While this is going on, grind about 35 grams of coffee (or two heaping AeroPress scoops, included with the device). Rinse filter and place in filter cap, then twist until locked onto AeroPress body. Place coffee into AeroPress, and place AeroPress on top of a sturdy 12 ounce coffee mug. Add water about a minute off the boil, up to the top of the “2″ marking on AeroPress. Stir gently but consistently for about one minute.

Insert plunger into AeroPress body, and press firmly for 20-30 seconds, until plunger comes to rest on bed of coffee grounds. Remove AeroPress from cup. Add the rest of the hot water, let cool to about 160 degrees. And enjoy!

WOW! This Saturday is the 5th installment of the Twenty-Eleven Second Saturday series. Second Saturday will again be a great way to spend a day Downtown. August 13th, in beautiful Fountain Square Park and will continue each second Saturday through October from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This one will be a little different after we’ve lost a few trees and one statue is missing for repair but, that doesn’t mean it won’t be a great time.

Three bands will play throughout the day, with the usual great mix of craft vendors, food and fun. Starts at 9 and goes till 5:30. Come and plan to spend the day. You can even learn to play chess if you’ve never tried.

For your enjoyment there will be horse and carriage rides by Rockin B Horse and Carriage, inflatables for the kids by Party 1 Superstore, face painting, balloon twisting, food vendors, product vendor booths and more, that will all combine for fun and excitement.

The event is now in its second year and grows with each month that passes.
The thing we like about Second Saturday is it brings some people who don’t get downtown very often and they are exposed to the quiet but strong resurgence our downtown has made over the past 5 years. Artisans and entrepreneurs display their handicrafts and products in a comfortable shopping atmosphere that shows the fun of shopping in Downtown Bowling Green. If you haven’t been Downtown lately, come and enjoy Second Saturdays throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall.

Some vendors bring beautiful handmade jewelry at very reasonable
prices. Sno Cones and Hawaiian Shaved Ice really hit the spot on hot
Summer days. And just add soda water, or and carbonated beverage to one

I’ve many times gone to Bowling Green Country Club and I am ashamed I’ve passed Fort Webb and not stopped. It’s maybe one of the coolest historical sites in Bowling Green since, you can still see some of the remnants of the past war still in this very calm and interesting site. Just down Beech Bend Road and into Country Club Drive (not a private road by the way) sits this city park. It still has the original configuration since it was constructed by the Confederate States Army.

Fort Webb is located at head of navigation on Barren and Green river systems, this helped make Bowling Green an important stronghold with two railroads to Memphis and Nashville. Fort Lyle and C.F. Smith were a very elaborate fortifications made of limestone blocks but Fort Webb were much simpler. It’s one that was “Thrown up” (a military engineering term) by large numbers of men with picks and shovels. Soldiers would dig a ditch and throw the dirt onto the parapet. With such earthworks before them, an attacking enemy must, charge towards the fort, descend or fall into the ditch, and then climb the high, then climb the high, steep scarp wall of the parapet in order to storm the fort… if possible.

The main structure visible at Fort Webb is an earthworks “lunette.” Historically, this was a standard shape used by military engineers, and resembled a crescent moon or lunar shape, thus the name. Lunettes were often built to protect artillery.

If you observe the parts of earthwork wall where the soil has eroded away, you may notice some large pieces of limestone embedded in the dirt. These rocks were not placed there for extra strength or reinforcement; the earth wall in itself was enough to absorb shot and shell. They were placed there as a building guide. With rocks or logs outlining the size and shape of the lunette, the soldiers simply buried them using the soil dug from the outer ditch.

Time is ticking away before Bowling Green’s Grateful Gathering takes place this weekend. Do you have your tickets? As we told you the last time this will help benefit the Son Rhea Foundation and how it was founded in 2000 to offset music program cuts by providing musical equipment and cash to South Central Kentucky Schools (all counties). Approx $200,000 has been donated in the organization’s 10-year existence all from the Grateful Gathering!

The Grateful Gathering is a festival featuring Grateful Dead, jam-band, and progressive music by local and regional artists, arts and crafts, kid’s activities such as face painting, magic show, and a clown, all with an emphasis on fun. Dancing will be encouraged.

It’s all about the music – music in our schools, music students, as well as the music at the festival.

This festival is for everyone: Dead-Heads, hippies, bikers, musicians, artists, So Central KY students and their parents, 60s/70s nostalgia buffs, music lovers, and anyone who enjoys a good time.

In December 2007 I reached a decision point in my life. I was on the fast track to unemployment, graduating in five months with a political science degree and no desire to go to law school or continue my studies. Reverting back to the classic question of our youth, “If you had one million dollars what would you do for the rest of your life?”, I knew my answer: open a restaurant. Now, here we are a little over three years later, and it is with unbelievable excitement that I announce Home: Cafe and Marketplace opening summer 2011 in Bowling Green, KY.

After graduating from Miami University in Oxford, OH, I headed south to Lexington, KY to attend Sullivan University and study Culinary Arts. While attending school I worked full time under a very talented chef name Jeff Mayer at Saul Good Restaurant & Pub. While many aspiring chefs sweat it out in fast food joints of chain restaurants with uninspired menus, I was fortunate my first kitchen job was under a chef with a passion for food and for teaching.

My journey through culinary school could not be told without without mentioning one Chelsey King. In school I met a girl fresh out of high school with an unbelievable amount of talent, a love of food, and a stubbornness to match mine. If you want to know Chelsey King you better do so by October 15, because on that day she becomes my sous chef in life and Chelsey Poling.

After stints at Heirloom in Midway, KY (easily one of the best restaurants in the state if you haven’t been there) and Giacamo’s Deli in downtown Lexington, I was given the opportunity to return home as the executive chef of 440 Main and Micki’s on Main in downtown Bowling Green. For nearly a year now, I have had the privilege of working with a great group of people while sending out some truly spectacular food. Around December though, I was presented with another fantastic opportunity, and in life, if you are presented with an opportunity, you are crazy not to take it.

The Third Gallery Hop of 2011 is in a couple of Fridays and this time they have a special showing of the work done by Print Mafia. As described on their website:

In 1997, Print Mafia came into reality. Producing a huge catalog of gig posters in diverse genres, Print Mafia has made stuff. And made more stuff. And made stuff from other stuff. From The Melvins to Marilyn Manson, from Jack White to John Mayer. Each individual poster, and this is a vital rule of Print Mafia’s work, is done by the hands of Jim or Connie and done with a personal creative investment to the particular event. Print Mafia admittedly has their own style: distorted, gruff, messy, and very much alive – but strive to make, for example, a Bruce Springsteen poster look like a Bruce Springsteen poster by Print Mafia, rather than a Print Mafia poster that might be for Bruce Springsteen.

As you drive up Main St. towards the top of the hill, looking at Bowling Green’s Iconic water tower it feels the hill is so steep that your car will pull harder to make it up the hill. A great place if in the 1860’s you were to fortify your dominance and position over a city. A city known as the Gibraltar of the West. Known as Reservoir Hill now, College Hill was one of nine key fortifications of the Confederate States Army defense in 1861 for their occupation of Bowling Green.

Trees had fallen and then their ends were sharpened and placed as Cavalry Barriers. Stones from a nearby college building under construction were used for fortification. The whole system of defense with these forts were manned in Bowling Green by 4,000 confederate soldiers.

Construction of this strong defensive work began in 1861 during the Confederate occupation as we’ve said. After the Confederates abandoned the city the Union Army completed the fortification, named Fort C. F. Smith in honor of General Charles Ferguson Smith (He had died of his injuries 2 weeks earlier at the battle of Shiloh). (Plan outline above) Of the extensive fortifications that once occupied this hilltop, only these outer earthworks remain. It truly is cool that 150 years later you can walk down or up the hill and have a nice lunch on these old stones.

The stone is rather old (don’t know date) but it reads; “EARTHWORKS THROWN UP UNDER FEDERAL GENERAL OBSY M MITCHELL AND CO BENJ HARRISON LATER PRESIDENT 1862.”

The long, linear wall is the breastwork, which protected infantrymen from enemy fire. The semi-circular lunette sheltered artillery pieces. Union Colonel Benjamin Harrison supervised construction of these earthworks.

Fort C. F. Smith was described as a bastion fort; forts designed to withstand attack from any direction. Owing to the time and labor required in their construction, bastion forts were usually built only at sites of great importance; sites which demanded the presence of troops. Fort C. F. Smith was heavily armed. The fort mounted four 20-pounder Parrotts; two 3.8 inch James rifles; four 4-inch rifled guns; thirteen 12-pounder light and two 6-pounder smooth bores.
