Total honesty upfront, this writer is a button geek. So much so, I collect them and I am a member of the APIC. SO excuse me while I geek out about this glorious day! I just want Bowling Green people who are like me to enjoy the 115th anniversary of the pin-back button on July 21 by wearing your favorite button (or buttons) for all to see.

Not everyone enjoys Buttons, I mean flair.

The nation’s button guru, Ted Hake (www.hakes.com) and Christen Carter, owner of Busy Beaver Button Co. (www.busybeaver.net) are declaring July 21st the day to honor the button as a graphic art form and social communication device so, we at Buy Local Bowling Green want to support them! The date is based on the day in 1896 when the nation’s first and foremost button maker, Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, NJ received their final patent for their unique process. Celebrate by pinning on your pin-backs!

Three places to get your buttons locally are Great Escape Records and Comics (some political but, many rock and roll and pop cultured inspired pieces), Steve’s Sports Cards (Basically the Guru of political buttons in our area) and Labold and Sons Salvage (Danielle has the corner of vintage ad buttons and random pieces). Also, don’t forget the Print Mafia buttons, BuyLocalBG.com buttons and our favorite “Bowling Green Somebody’s Gotta Live Here”series. BuyLocalBG.com and BGSGLH can be found at Spencer’s Coffeehouse. Below are some of the samples (all locations have much more than photos show):

Steve’s Sports Cards 31W Bypass next to Werner Lowe.

Great Escape Records and Comics on Scottsville Rd.

Labold and Sons Salvage on Main Street Downtown!

Show your Flair! Get a button on for National Button Day and Remember it’s about making a statement. Plus, it’s always fun to see the clever advertising pitches companies, bands and politicians make.
