Part 1: Mt. Moriah Cemetery, resting place of “African American Union Soldiers.”

There is a marker on top of the Hill on the Campus of WKU that says the old Fort we call “Fort Lytle” was known as “Fort Albert Sydney Johnston.” This would make sense since General Albert Sydney Johnson, commander of the CSA in the west, moved the Head-Quarters of his operation to Bowling Green in October of 1861. Just one problem, there is no evidence saying it was called Fort Albert Sydney Johnston.

For a period of time the Fort that stood on what is known as Vinegar Hill was known as ‘Fort Vinegar Hill.’ Confederate Major Mott once said, “Fort Vinegar, a sour name, at least it would have proven to be so at an advancing enemy.” Finally, after Johnston abandoned Bowling Green with the Confederate Army and the Union had taken the town, Fort Vinegar was given the name Fort Lytle. Named after General William Lytle who died leading the charge at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, in 1862.

Lytle was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the scion of a leading area family, the Lytle family. He graduated from Cincinnati College and studied law. After passing the bar exam, he established a law firm in Cincinnati, but soon enlisted in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served as a captain in the Mexican-American War. He was also part of the Ohio state legislature as a Democrat.

Much of the building materials and landscape of Fort Lytle was incorporated into the University Campus that sits there now. Such as, what was once combat trenches are now student walking paths.

As we’ve said before, the city was at one time home to former (future at that time) President Benjamin Harrison. At that time he was a Colonel and it would not be out of line to think he spent some time at Fort Lytle. It’s a great view at the former home of the Fort as well.

As we were told by those working in the Kentucky Museum, Fort Lytle was a great look out point for the area. Most of the trees you see now were not there (or any trees for that matter) in early Bowling Green, as they had been cleared and used in construction and as firewood. At the time, Fort Webb would have been in eye sight from this location.

This Saturday is the 6th installment of the Twenty-Eleven Second Saturday series. Second Saturday will again be a great way to spend a day Downtown. The thing we like about Second Saturday is it brings some people who don’t get downtown very often and they are exposed to the quiet but strong resurgence our downtown has made over the past 5 years. Artisans and entrepreneurs display their handicrafts and products in a comfortable shopping atmosphere that shows the fun of shopping in Downtown Bowling Green. If you haven’t been Downtown lately, come and enjoy Second Saturdays before it ends next month.

Some vendors bring beautiful handmade jewelry at very reasonable
prices. Sno Cones and Hawaiian Shaved Ice really hit the spot on hot
Summer days. And just add soda water, or and carbonated beverage to one
of our vendor’s products, and enjoy wonderful (and easy to make) home-

A converted area that is a place for worship on Sundays, will be giving a helping hand to the kids and charities of the community this weekend with Lil’ Angels Attic. Parents and kids in Bowling Green have a unique way of stocking up on clothes toys and other needed items, through the event hosted by Broadway United Methodist. Lil’ Angels Attic at Broadway United Methodist has been a great helping hand to the families of Bowling Green as well as the charities. Lil’ Angels Attic is a biannual children’s consignment sale raising funds for local children and family charities. Previous charity recipients include The Family Enrichment Center, New Beginnings Therapeutic Riding, CASA, Pregnancy Support Center, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters, just to name a few.

Thousands of items will be on sale like Girls clothing (infant to size 20), Boys clothing (infant to size 20), Maternity Clothing, Toys, Books, Children’s furniture, Games, Movies, Video Games, Nursery Items, Swings and So Much More. The big event starts this Friday at 9am-7pm and Saturday 9am-12pm.

Since it’s inception in 2002, they have donated over $500,000 in cash and merchandise to various organizations. They also pick one charity each sale to be their Heaven Cent charity, which donations are made specifically by asking each shopper as they check out to donate a dollar. Brother against brother. Neighbor versus neighbor. All the cliche’ lines are used but in our city of Bowling Green we had a great divide. A divide that saw the city so strong with secessionist and those that were strong abolitionists. One said abolitionist would be the elected Congressman, Henry Grider. Born in Garrard County, he was a veteran of the War of 1812, Henry Grider practiced law in Bowling Green at the time he served during the war. Grider served as the first Corporal in Payne’s company of the Kentucky mounted volunteer militia.

After the war he started his political life. Grider was a Whig, much like our state’s legendary politician Henry Clay. Serving first in the State House Legislation in 1827 and 1831 and then in it’s Senate from 1833-1837. In 1842 he was elected to the first of two consecutive terms in the US Congress, representing his state’s 3rd District, and served from 1843 to 1847.

Kentucky being a slave state, was friendly to the cause of the south and the slave trade. Henry Grider, although from Kentucky, opposed this practice and was vocal of his opposition to Slavery. Congressman Grider was one of the few Congressmen south of the Mason-Dixon line to vote for the unsuccessful Wilmot Proviso (1846), which would have prohibited slavery in new territories acquired from Mexico, including California.

His stance on the issue cost him time in office, as would be expected. In the 1850s he did not serve in any capacity but continued to practice law in Bowling Green. With a war coming around the corner Henry Grider was reelected to the US House, but as a Unionist and would serve three more terms in office. He switched to the Democratic Party (which is odd because much of the Kentucky Democratic party sided with the southern cause) for his final term and served from 1861 till his death.

After the war Henry Grider was a member of the Committee on Reconstruction. The committee was vital and helped draft the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which broadened American citizenship to include former slaves. With his age and declining health he came back to Bowling Green. That is where he passed away and is now buried, in the Pioneer Cemetery.

Basil Fizz Instructions:

1. Take a Shaker filled with ice.

2. Break up some basil into the shaker.

3. Add some fresh ginger and muddle with ice and basil.

4. Add a small amount of Simple Syrup.

5. One shot of Vodka.

6. add more ice and top off with club soda then Mix.

7. Strain it into glass, top off with ice and serve with Basil garnish.

It could be the charm of the log cabin off Old Louisville Road that attracted me to McKenzye’s Eatery and Bakery. Nah, it probably was when someone told me about the 2 piece Fried Chicken plate with 2 sides (Fried Okra and Potato Salad for me) with a roll that sold me. A new restaurant that opened this Tuesday in the old log cabin building on Old Louisville road the restaurant felt vibrant and the staff was ready to serve the minute we hit the door.

Just a short drive from Downtown offices or Cemetery and Louisville Road.

The menu is simple and not overdone. Basic sandwiches like Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers & BLTs are on the list. Although it’s nice to see some great sandwiches that aren’t served everywhere like a good old fashioned grilled cheese, Grilled Pimento Cheese, Ham and Cheese and Fresh Chicken Sandwiches.

There are Veggie plates but I forgot to ask…. not assuming these are “Vegetarian” at all. This is good old fashioned meat and three that has made Bowling Green mouths salivate for decades.

McKenzye’s Eatery and Bakery does have specials and deserts daily. They are open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:30am-8:00pm. It’s an easy to spot restaurant at 1567 Old Louisville Rd and you can call ahead to find out the specials at 904-4225. Hey, give it a couple tries!

It really doesn’t matter if you are a Civil War buff or a fan of Bowling Green. If you have a passing interest in the Civil War or the City itself, you will want to mark your calendar for September 17th, 2011!

As the promo by the Convention and Vistor’s Bureau describes it:

“At 8 am, September 16, 1861, 5000 Confederate troops disembarked in Bowling Green, KY, from the 10 locomotives and 200 box cars confiscated in Nashville, TN by General Simon Bolivar Buckner. The town of 3000 people found themselves suddenly thrown into the burgeoning conflict and the center of Kentucky’s Confederate Government.”

On September 17th, 2o11 150 years and a day later Bowling Green will honor and remember it’s history in the war that tore our state apart where many families had split allegiances.

The following is the schedule of events planned for the day:

7:30am-9:30am: Opening Ceremonies- Re-Enactment of the invasion and surrender of Bowling Green at the L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street.

10:00am-4:00pm: Confederate Encampment–Re-Enactment of Riverview’s munitions storage site. Free of charge at Riverview at Hobson Grove, 1100 West Main Avenue.

10:00am-1:00pm: Downtown Bowling Green Walking Tours– Architectural self-guided walking tour of Bowling Green’s Civil War buildings with costumed docents at the locations along the path. Tour is free of charge and starts at The Presbyterian Church, 1003 State Street.

10:00am-4:00pm: Living History and Music– Living History demonstrations that include blacksmithing, weaving, spinning, woodcarving, basket making and hands-on craft activities. Event is free of charge. There will also be an exhibit Opening: The Civil War and The Railroad at the L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street. The Exhibit is $10 for Adults/$8 for seniors and students (ages 10 & up).

10:00am-4:00pm: A Star in Each Flag: Conflict in Kentucky– Featuring the regions largest Civil War Exhibit (Editorial Note: A must see), with hands on children’s activities that day. Also, Civil War Music & Dancing, Weaponry demonstration and more. Tour is free of charge on the campus of WKU’s Kentucky museum, 1 Big Red Way.

10:00am-2:00pm: Smoke Writing Tours– Guided tour of soldiers’ signatures inside Lost River Cave. Tours at 10am and 2pm. $25 admission and space is limited so reserve ahead at 270-393-0077. Lost River Cave, 2818 Nashville Road.

EVENING EVENT

6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm & 7:30pm: Spirits of the Civil War– Guided tour of nearby points of interest and “ghostly perspectives” of Civil War era “Spirits” performed by the Fountain Square Players. Tour is $10 for Adults and $8 for Seniors and Students (10 & up). Space is limited, call ahead for reservations at 270-782-3119. Tour will start at L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street.

As someone who has enjoyed the many events of Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar I also found out, I like Maduro wrap cigars. A darker wrap than most of the cigars on their shelf. Last few times we talked to Chris Abend, co-owner of Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar he gave us a simple lesson on types of cigars. Then he gave us the Favorite Cigars on our next visit. Earlier this month he gave us 5 cigars that you can smoke in under 30 minutes. Perfect for that Lunch break smoke.

Now, Chris Abend is helping those of us who love the Maduro Cigars with a Top 5 Maduro Cigars in no particular order:

Padron 45 Maduro: The Padron Family Reserve #45 is a limited production cigar from Padron. Available in a Maduro wrapper, this cigar is made with tobacco aged for 10 years. Box-pressed, full bodied, and 52 x 6″ in size. Rated 95 and voted “2009 Cigar of the Year” by Cigar Aficionado.

LADC Mi Amor Magnifico: Handmade in small-batch fashion, the Mi Amor features a luscious Cuban-seed wrapper grown in Mexico and a marvelous blend of aged Nicaraguan tobaccos. Medium to full-bodied, these cigars are rich, complex and very well-balanced.

La Flor Dominicana Chisel Maduro: Continuing their trend of blending powerful cigars at LFD with this one. These Babies are amazing. Dominican filler and binder grown on their farm, wrapped in dark Ecuadorian sun grown leaves. Eat before you smoke.

Alec Bradley Tempus Imperator Maduro: Alec Bradley Tempus Maduro offers the same 94 rated Nicaraguan and Honduran blend in a dark, delicious San Andres wrapper. Medium to full bodied, it’s a cigar with more power than traditional Tempus and with its own character.

Oliva G Maduro Perfecto: Serie G Maduro by Oliva is a medium body blend made with Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The unique flavor notes of this wrapper are complimented by the natural richness of Nicaraguan Habano fillers. The Serie G Maduro has hints of cedar and coffee from its Nicaraguan binder and long fillers.

Bang for the Buck: Padron 2000 Maduro- This cigar may be the cigar many maduros will be judged. Padron doesn’t make a bad cigar and this one exceeds that by being a great smoke with the best bang for your buck. One thing they do that set them apart is they grow their own maduro wrapper. This allows the company to hand cultivate and hand pick only the best Cuban seed tobacco leaves in their own field. The Maduro wrappers are then entrusted to their most skilled Cuban trained torcedores. However, before being boxed, the cigars are put aside for a minimum of three years of slow, carefully monitored aging. While there may not be many of the great Padron Maduro cigars, what there are are truly remarkable.

Jonesville was an African American community that was founded in 1867 by Charles L. Jones, an emancipated slave. This reconstruction era settlement grew to include several hundred residents, an elementary school, businesses, and two churches. More so, it became a thriving community among emancipated slaves in the area.

Part of the area (which now Nick Denes Field, LT Smith stadium and EA Diddle Arena now sit on the old town area) had an old church that was used to enlist Runaway slaves into the Federal Army to fight the Confederates.

Jonesville on paper dates back to 1871. The earliest deed was recorded in 1871. At it’s peak in the 1920’s it was home to three salons, a gas station, a two grocery stores, boarding house, barber shop, tea room, ice rink, multiple restaurants and an elementary school. In the middle of it all was Mt. Zion Baptist church.

Once a thriving community on 30 acres it was eliminated for the expansion of WKU. 67 homes were taken to make room for the expansion of the sports facilities on WKU’s campus between 1955 and 1967. Sadly, a marker is all that’s left to let you know that a community was once there. Places where people lived or visited like “Hardin’s Roadhouse.” Hardin’s was known for some of the best barbecue.

According to an account by a Jonesville resident, ‘Back then Hardin’s didn’t just serve black patrons since he had 2 sections, one for blacks and one for whites. Hardin also used to cater and was often hired by some of the richest families in town, a testament to how good his food actually was.’

When then Presidents Dero Downing and Kelly Thompson were eliminating this community to expand WKU there was talk of naming some of the land “Hardin’s corner” but nothing ever came of honoring the community. It wasn’t till recently that a marker was placed.

If you go to the Kentucky Museum, you can find old articles that talk of how the Minister of Mt. Zion fought against Urban renewal. Mainly because it would not only hurt the singular families but the community as a whole. Plus, many of the businesses that were taken by expansion did not survive.

This is about where the Kentucky Library sits now.

In recent accounts, the University administration brought in an agency called “Urban Renewal Commission.” This commission would condemn land for things like having too much trash in the yard and that would allow the University to buy the land on the cheap. This was quite typical in other cities around Kentucky and the US during that time and even today. Now, there is just a marker but you can see where so much history once stood.

The Capitol Arts Alliance is pleased to welcome Kentucky native Jonell Mosser home to the Capitol Arts Theatre on September 16, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. to share her genuine, soulful sound as she celebrates the release of her fifth solo album, Fortunes Lost, Fortunes Told.

Jonell started singing at a young age in her childhood home of Louisville, brought up with her mother’s love of jazz and big band. She attended Western Kentucky University, but dropped out to pursue her musical career. She was in the Ken Smith Band and a couple of all-female acts before meeting first husband John Cowan, lead singer of the New Grass Revival, and moving to Nashville.

She worked closely with Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was and cut a record including a version of the Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love,” which landed on the soundtrack for the 1998 film “Hope Floats”, starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. She has since kept busy with side projects including the band Kentucky Thunder and being one of the Freedom Singers, as well as continuing to release solo albums, each conveying her strength and sophistication as a vocalist.

Jonell has a powerful voice and has been compared to Janis Joplin while still conveying the finesse of folk, jazz and Southern soul. She has been asked to sing backup vocals for such artists as B.B. King, Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Wynona, Vince Gill, and Waylon Jennings, yet she remains one of the industry’s best-kept secrets as a solo artist. The Capitol Arts Alliance is excited to welcome Jonell back to Bowling Green and to showcase her fabulous talent.

Before I had a child I had only heard of the “Lil’ Angels Attic Consignment Sale.” After my child was born, I experienced it. Whoa! This is maybe one of the coolest and craziest events that is totally shopping based in Bowling Green. Right now, Lil’ Angels Attic is calling for Volunteers! If you have a friend who is not selling, but would love to shop their pre-sale, anyone who volunteers a 3 hour shift to Lil’ Angels Attic can shop their pre-sale. Lil Angels Attic donates the profits from their sale to local charities and ministries. Since it’s inception in 2002, they have donated over $500,000 in cash and merchandise to various organizations. They also pick one charity each sale to be their Heaven Cent charity, which donations are made specifically by asking each shopper as they check out to donate a dollar. This alone has raised $10,000 over the years. They also give gift certificates to city and county school resource centers for families to get needed items at the sale.

Check coolant level periodically to protect the engine from excessive heat and cold.

Know where the check engine light is on the dashboard. If the light goes on, have your vehicle checked by a mechanic to determine the cause of the warning. Often, these simple actions can avoid major repairs down the road. Make sure you and your student know how to change a tire and ensure that you have a quality jack and lug wrench in the car at all times. While we hope you never have to use them, occasionally road hazards may be unavoidable. No youth sports team or competition should be without a first aid kit designed to treat the most common injuries and illnesses that might be encountered. Booth Fire and Safety can help you make sure your child or teenagers team is kept safe with a first aid kit or other products.

Match the contents to the sport: The type of first aid that may be required varies by sport. Because bruises, abrasions, and sprained ankles are more common in baseball, a baseball team’s first aid kit, for instance, needs to be stocked with cold packs, elastic bandages, and Band-Aids, while a track team’s kit needs to have plenty of supplies to treat blisters, abrasions, pulled muscles, and sprains. If your team is going to be in the sun, carry sunscreen; the cross-country coach needs to carry an allergy kit to manage bee stings.
Stock a realistic quantity: Be prepared to treat more than one child at an event. For younger children, remember to stock pediatric doses (in liquid form, if necessary).
Ensure ready access: First aid supplies should be placed where they are readily accessible, and marked clearly to allow rapid identification. Use Ziploc-type bags within the kit for extra materials and to sort your supplies. For instance, it is helpful to partition supplies into modules “for wound care,” “for an allergic reaction,” and so forth.
Protect against damage: Carry supplies in a watertight container designed to withstand years of rough handling and extremes in temperature, such as a plastic (Pelican case or Otter Box) or metal container equipped with a rubber O-ring gasket for a tight, waterproof seal.

In June B&J Gallery and Buy Local Bowling Green gave away a piece of art and American history with the Fort Knox Floor American Flag. Some are still available at B&J Gallery but the majority of flags are about to become harder to come by as Mr. Walkup will have his final Bowling Green Public show. It’s a piece of art that has a historical significance to Kentucky and our fighting in World War II. The flag is made of the Barrack floors of Ft. Knox. Here is a photo of one of those soldiers who trained at Ft. Knox during the era this floor was used:

The exhibit will be at the Farmers market in front of Hobby Lobby. The wood is all but gone. Look for Reids Livery and Winery, and he will be with them. “Thanks Bowling Green for 3+ years of fun and support. If more wood comes available I might be back in business but for now lets clean out the garage and get some flags to good homes,” said Russ Walkup.

Downtown Bowling Green has many attractions and the courthouse is not really a historically significant place on the Civil War trail through Bowling Green. However there is a marker there recognizing Warren County’s Chief Union Civil War Officers and also lists those who received the Confederate Medals of Honor in 1863.

Next to the marker is a beautiful tribute to soldiers from the area who served in other U.S. wars:

The Warren County Courthouse actually did not exist during the war but was built starting in 1867. Finished in 1869, it cost $125,000 to build and was the 3rd courthouse for Warren County. The courthouse still has the look it had when it opened in 1869. The original Victorian iron fence with limestone posts encloses the courthouse grounds. The interior of the courthouse has been majorly renovated but it’s nice to know the outside remains the same.

Now, rumor has it the courthouse was used for more than court proceedings. In it’s time it was a bit of a “social club.” Some local rumors say that lawyers in the past had crawled in the windows for late night card games. It also was the hub to find election results before we had so much access to information instantly.

Instructions for making Sticky Bun Latte:

+Add Butter Pecan Syrup

+Add Cinnamon Syrup or real Cinnamon

+Add Vanilla Syrup

+Mix the syrups up “Real Nice.”

+Grind Espresso or use Aero or French Press and draw the espresso into cup of syrup.

+Steam whole milk to 160 degrees. Let it sit a few seconds.

+Add milk and creative design.

“This is such a good meal!”

Full disclosure, the sandwich above was fully consumed by yours truly and I must say, it impressed me. I am not a Vegan or Vegetarian but this is a meal I would order when out. It’s not a meat substitute because it’s so much more. The Bistro does well with this Sandwich that is filled with Portabella mushrooms, eggplant, roasted red peppers with sundried tomato pesto eoli.

A great restaurant to dine in, with great service, a great view from the patio and an optional menu for Vegans and Vegetarians.

If you have a recipe from the Farmer’s Market or are a chef at a local restaurant, let us know what you are serving up! Many haven’t considered Spencer’s Coffehouse for breakfast and it’s criminal. Candle Maker’s On The Square is more than just a place to buy candles but they sure make it hard not to focus on how great they are at doing just that. We’ve often covered new scents and techniques they use in their process. Recently Labold and Sons Salvage delivered a new treasure to Candle Makers with vintage candle jars. Above and below you can see these simple but elegant glass beauties:

The far left jar has a lid that doubles as something that can be used on a burner.

Also with the upcoming outside School sporting events of Football, Soccer and Cross Country; parents can be prepared to keep the bugs away with Candle Maker’s Citronella. They are now offering Citronella Candles (some in seamless tins or whatever you would like). Citronella candles are candles which are blended with essential oil from citronella, a grass native to Asia. Dental implants sound kind of odd on the surface and are different than a smile design. Many people should consider a Dental Implant from Destiny Dental and some should not. There are three basic questions that people ask.

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

Dental implants are the most natural way to replace a missing tooth. Made of titanium metal, the implants are surgically embedded in the jawbone as a substitute that takes the place of a tooth root. Through a process called osseointegration, the bone grows around the implant, fusing the two together & providing a secure anchor for crowns, bridges or dentures.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?

Before any work can be done, Destiny Dental must perform a thorough assessment of your medical & dental history, as well as a full-mouth examination, including specific x-rays. Then Doctor Robertson or Davis will then uses this information to map out a complete treatment plan. Once this is done, you’ll undergo local anesthesia & surgical insertion of titanium metal implants into the jawbone. After a period of healing, which varies according to type of implant & quality & quantity of bone, crowns, bridges or dentures can be firmly attached to the implant.

HOW MANY IMPLANTS SHOULD BE PLACED?

Many factors, such as quality & quantity of your bones, the existing anatomy of the bone & your financial budget must be taken into consideration during the treatment planning to determine the number of implants you should receive. To ensure lasting success, enough implants need to be placed to support the teeth, & the traditional ratio is one implant per tooth replaced. If the number of implants is limited in efforts to save the patient money, keep in mind implants that fail because there are not enough to securely hold the teeth in place can be even more costly in the long run. In these cases, instead of sacrificing the overall success of the procedure, we can avoid implant treatment altogether or alter the type of restoration according to the patient’s financial constraints.

To be straight up there isn’t much to see here in terms of actual things from the Civil War. Mainly due to the fact it’s still a functioning boatlanding. There is however a great exhibit displaying the images of the past hospital and what the soldiers went through health wise.

The Barren River was a major contributing factor to making Bowling Green a strategic location for both armies. The river offered a plentiful supply of fresh water for the troops and it was an ideal way to move men and supplies quickly and efficiently. This area was protected by the cannons of Fort Baker.

Nearby was one of several military hospitals located in the Bowling Green area. This hospital was used first by the CSA and then by the Federal Army. Bowling Green’s hospital was safely behind the battle lines, which made it a key spot for recovery for both armies. 65% of the men who died during the Civil War died due to illness (i.e. Typhoid, Measles, Malaria, Yellow Fever, Scurvy, Dysentery, Pneumonia and Flu).

The death toll of the Civil War was numbered in the 650,000 of both Confederate and Union Soldiers. The death toll from this war is larger than all other wars combined in the United States History even the inclusion of the Revolutionary war. Over 400,000 soldiers died from disease and illness, not war wounds.

Spencer’s CoffeeHouse Aeropress (Aeropress are available in store to drink or to take home):

The AeroPress is an easy way to brew a single cup of coffee with more richness and subtlety than a standard drip coffee maker. First off, begin boiling about 12 ounces of filtered water. While this is going on, grind about 35 grams of coffee (or two heaping AeroPress scoops, included with the device). Rinse filter and place in filter cap, then twist until locked onto AeroPress body. Place coffee into AeroPress, and place AeroPress on top of a sturdy 12 ounce coffee mug. Add water about a minute off the boil, up to the top of the “2″ marking on AeroPress. Stir gently but consistently for about one minute.

Insert plunger into AeroPress body, and press firmly for 20-30 seconds, until plunger comes to rest on bed of coffee grounds. Remove AeroPress from cup. Add the rest of the hot water, let cool to about 160 degrees. And enjoy!

WOW! This Saturday is the 5th installment of the Twenty-Eleven Second Saturday series. Second Saturday will again be a great way to spend a day Downtown. August 13th, in beautiful Fountain Square Park and will continue each second Saturday through October from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This one will be a little different after we’ve lost a few trees and one statue is missing for repair but, that doesn’t mean it won’t be a great time.

Three bands will play throughout the day, with the usual great mix of craft vendors, food and fun. Starts at 9 and goes till 5:30. Come and plan to spend the day. You can even learn to play chess if you’ve never tried.

For your enjoyment there will be horse and carriage rides by Rockin B Horse and Carriage, inflatables for the kids by Party 1 Superstore, face painting, balloon twisting, food vendors, product vendor booths and more, that will all combine for fun and excitement.

The event is now in its second year and grows with each month that passes.
The thing we like about Second Saturday is it brings some people who don’t get downtown very often and they are exposed to the quiet but strong resurgence our downtown has made over the past 5 years. Artisans and entrepreneurs display their handicrafts and products in a comfortable shopping atmosphere that shows the fun of shopping in Downtown Bowling Green. If you haven’t been Downtown lately, come and enjoy Second Saturdays throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall.

Some vendors bring beautiful handmade jewelry at very reasonable
prices. Sno Cones and Hawaiian Shaved Ice really hit the spot on hot
Summer days. And just add soda water, or and carbonated beverage to one

I’ve many times gone to Bowling Green Country Club and I am ashamed I’ve passed Fort Webb and not stopped. It’s maybe one of the coolest historical sites in Bowling Green since, you can still see some of the remnants of the past war still in this very calm and interesting site. Just down Beech Bend Road and into Country Club Drive (not a private road by the way) sits this city park. It still has the original configuration since it was constructed by the Confederate States Army.

Fort Webb is located at head of navigation on Barren and Green river systems, this helped make Bowling Green an important stronghold with two railroads to Memphis and Nashville. Fort Lyle and C.F. Smith were a very elaborate fortifications made of limestone blocks but Fort Webb were much simpler. It’s one that was “Thrown up” (a military engineering term) by large numbers of men with picks and shovels. Soldiers would dig a ditch and throw the dirt onto the parapet. With such earthworks before them, an attacking enemy must, charge towards the fort, descend or fall into the ditch, and then climb the high, then climb the high, steep scarp wall of the parapet in order to storm the fort… if possible.

The main structure visible at Fort Webb is an earthworks “lunette.” Historically, this was a standard shape used by military engineers, and resembled a crescent moon or lunar shape, thus the name. Lunettes were often built to protect artillery.

If you observe the parts of earthwork wall where the soil has eroded away, you may notice some large pieces of limestone embedded in the dirt. These rocks were not placed there for extra strength or reinforcement; the earth wall in itself was enough to absorb shot and shell. They were placed there as a building guide. With rocks or logs outlining the size and shape of the lunette, the soldiers simply buried them using the soil dug from the outer ditch.

Time is ticking away before Bowling Green’s Grateful Gathering takes place this weekend. Do you have your tickets? As we told you the last time this will help benefit the Son Rhea Foundation and how it was founded in 2000 to offset music program cuts by providing musical equipment and cash to South Central Kentucky Schools (all counties). Approx $200,000 has been donated in the organization’s 10-year existence all from the Grateful Gathering!

The Grateful Gathering is a festival featuring Grateful Dead, jam-band, and progressive music by local and regional artists, arts and crafts, kid’s activities such as face painting, magic show, and a clown, all with an emphasis on fun. Dancing will be encouraged.

It’s all about the music – music in our schools, music students, as well as the music at the festival.

This festival is for everyone: Dead-Heads, hippies, bikers, musicians, artists, So Central KY students and their parents, 60s/70s nostalgia buffs, music lovers, and anyone who enjoys a good time.

In December 2007 I reached a decision point in my life. I was on the fast track to unemployment, graduating in five months with a political science degree and no desire to go to law school or continue my studies. Reverting back to the classic question of our youth, “If you had one million dollars what would you do for the rest of your life?”, I knew my answer: open a restaurant. Now, here we are a little over three years later, and it is with unbelievable excitement that I announce Home: Cafe and Marketplace opening summer 2011 in Bowling Green, KY.

After graduating from Miami University in Oxford, OH, I headed south to Lexington, KY to attend Sullivan University and study Culinary Arts. While attending school I worked full time under a very talented chef name Jeff Mayer at Saul Good Restaurant & Pub. While many aspiring chefs sweat it out in fast food joints of chain restaurants with uninspired menus, I was fortunate my first kitchen job was under a chef with a passion for food and for teaching.

My journey through culinary school could not be told without without mentioning one Chelsey King. In school I met a girl fresh out of high school with an unbelievable amount of talent, a love of food, and a stubbornness to match mine. If you want to know Chelsey King you better do so by October 15, because on that day she becomes my sous chef in life and Chelsey Poling.

After stints at Heirloom in Midway, KY (easily one of the best restaurants in the state if you haven’t been there) and Giacamo’s Deli in downtown Lexington, I was given the opportunity to return home as the executive chef of 440 Main and Micki’s on Main in downtown Bowling Green. For nearly a year now, I have had the privilege of working with a great group of people while sending out some truly spectacular food. Around December though, I was presented with another fantastic opportunity, and in life, if you are presented with an opportunity, you are crazy not to take it.

The Third Gallery Hop of 2011 is in a couple of Fridays and this time they have a special showing of the work done by Print Mafia. As described on their website:

In 1997, Print Mafia came into reality. Producing a huge catalog of gig posters in diverse genres, Print Mafia has made stuff. And made more stuff. And made stuff from other stuff. From The Melvins to Marilyn Manson, from Jack White to John Mayer. Each individual poster, and this is a vital rule of Print Mafia’s work, is done by the hands of Jim or Connie and done with a personal creative investment to the particular event. Print Mafia admittedly has their own style: distorted, gruff, messy, and very much alive – but strive to make, for example, a Bruce Springsteen poster look like a Bruce Springsteen poster by Print Mafia, rather than a Print Mafia poster that might be for Bruce Springsteen.

As you drive up Main St. towards the top of the hill, looking at Bowling Green’s Iconic water tower it feels the hill is so steep that your car will pull harder to make it up the hill. A great place if in the 1860’s you were to fortify your dominance and position over a city. A city known as the Gibraltar of the West. Known as Reservoir Hill now, College Hill was one of nine key fortifications of the Confederate States Army defense in 1861 for their occupation of Bowling Green.

Trees had fallen and then their ends were sharpened and placed as Cavalry Barriers. Stones from a nearby college building under construction were used for fortification. The whole system of defense with these forts were manned in Bowling Green by 4,000 confederate soldiers.

Construction of this strong defensive work began in 1861 during the Confederate occupation as we’ve said. After the Confederates abandoned the city the Union Army completed the fortification, named Fort C. F. Smith in honor of General Charles Ferguson Smith (He had died of his injuries 2 weeks earlier at the battle of Shiloh). (Plan outline above) Of the extensive fortifications that once occupied this hilltop, only these outer earthworks remain. It truly is cool that 150 years later you can walk down or up the hill and have a nice lunch on these old stones.

The stone is rather old (don’t know date) but it reads; “EARTHWORKS THROWN UP UNDER FEDERAL GENERAL OBSY M MITCHELL AND CO BENJ HARRISON LATER PRESIDENT 1862.”

The long, linear wall is the breastwork, which protected infantrymen from enemy fire. The semi-circular lunette sheltered artillery pieces. Union Colonel Benjamin Harrison supervised construction of these earthworks.

Fort C. F. Smith was described as a bastion fort; forts designed to withstand attack from any direction. Owing to the time and labor required in their construction, bastion forts were usually built only at sites of great importance; sites which demanded the presence of troops. Fort C. F. Smith was heavily armed. The fort mounted four 20-pounder Parrotts; two 3.8 inch James rifles; four 4-inch rifled guns; thirteen 12-pounder light and two 6-pounder smooth bores.
