Runaway Rabbit: A Bowling Green Company with Global Appeal.

1

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Thursday, March 31st, 2011 10:00 AM CST

We love the unique businesses in Bowling Green that so many around the world have learned about but, some in their very own city have not checked out themselves. Runaway Rabbit was a company we learned about last year. Runaway Rabbit is the result of a notion of two stay-at-home moms from Bowling Green that evolved into a plan, then into a company that has taken on a life of its own! Gayla Warner and Laura Jones were in search of the perfect pair of bunny slippers that reminded each of them of a long lost pair from younger days. They were not to be found, so these enterprising moms set out to create this well-known, but curiously elusive critter.

As it says on their website: “Today they are making tracks (bunny tracks) to get this unique brand of comfort and fun out to the rest of the waiting world. They are confident that wearers will love them not only for the comfort they bring to the feet, but also for the joy they bring to the heart!” We just love the look of bunny slippers, were a sucker for comfortable slippers.

“Some funky and fun bags from Runaway Rabbit.”

Although, this is not just a company selling slippers. From Hoodies, Bags, Bed Jackets, Dish Towels, a great gift called “Keep Your Fork” and much much more these ladies have created a company that is unique, simple and brilliant. Check them out on their website or on facebook!

‘Every Kumari Rug Has a Story and Ships Direct to You’ is a great slogan. The Great thing about living in Bowling Green, they are right here in town so you can go right to them! The parent company of Kumari Rugs, Himalayan Handcrafted Rugs was established in 2004. Kumari Rugs are manufactured by Tibetan and Nepalese artisans in Nepal and designed by innovative American designers. They have a combined 70 years of experience in the Tibetan rug industry. One of their manufactures is a female coming from a Sherpa community. The rugs are meticulously handcrafted using Himalayan virgin wool and other natural yarns such as silk, hemp, aloe, and bamboo. The yarns are also hand carded and hand spun.
Some very unique pieces and some are on sale though Wednesday!  “Our SALE until March 30th will be 40% off all Rugs.  We also have Pillows and Accessories along with Hemp Clothing and Hemp Bags all $30 and under” says Cassie Wilson of Kumari Rugs. The BBQ In The Historic Shake Rag Community Is Excellent.

Keep your eyes peeled or you will miss this Bowling Green BBQ delight!

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

The white block building on the corner of 2nd Avenue and College Street smells of smoked BBQ on some mornings. The smell will almost make your car run off the road. The BBQ they are cooking is so good your tongue will jump for joy at the first taste. Located in the historic Shake Rag Community of Bowling Green, this BBQ stand is new but, this ain’t the first time they made BBQ.

On the day I visited I got the Pulled Pork and Corn cake plate to go. I’m always worried about new BBQ places since, I’m a BBQ snob. I got to my place where I could sample the meal. Oh my, it’s soo good. Corn cake on the bottom, Pork with an unbelievable midwestern BBQ style sauce and corn cake on the top. MMMM mmmm.

Here is their menu which has fish and other great items to eat:

As you can see it’s reasonably priced and it’s located a little off downtown and very close to the Medical Center. Tuesday through Saturday are great days since this place is open.

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Every month as you open your energy bill it’s a scary experience. How much will you have to pay this month? There could be a way to help lower that bill and not break the bank. Not to mention being more environmentally efficient. Capitol Window and Doors is now offering their XL70 Superglass at 50% off through April 15th. Save 50% and then save on your energy bill!

The XL70 Superglass is an Earthwise window that far exceeds the requirements of Energy Star, for the ultimate in window importance.

One question Capitol Window hears a lot from their customers is, “How much energy savings can I expect?” or “How much will my electricity bill go down with these new windows?” These are good questions and are often difficult to answer. It depends on which window you choose, how inefficient your current windows are and how much of your current energy usage goes to heating and cooling your home. Everyone should expect to see some savings, even with their most basic of replacement windows.

Most of their customers report a savings of 25-35 percent with XL70 Superglass. Some customers have written them and said their energy bills were cut in half! So how much will you save? That is really up to you. Call Capitol Window for a free in-home presentation and they will tailor an energy savings package to meet your particular needs!

Capitol Window and Door is located at 202 State Street in downtown Bowling Green. Call 842-9421 to get your free in-home estimate today or check them out online at www.capitolwindowanddoor.com

Destiny Dental’s “Invisalign” Creating Beautiful Smiles for Bowling Green.

1

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

Straighter Teeth. Healthier Gums. Easier Cleanings. Bowling Green’s Destiny Dental has been a leader in the area when it comes to this system. Some may still not understand what Invisalign actually does for your smile. Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth. Invisalign gradually moves your teeth through a series of custom-made, removable, nearly invisible Aligners.

It’s removable for good hygiene. You can brush and floss normally, which can prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Some orthodontic appliances, like braces, can cause gingivitis.

Your gum health may improve. Research has shown that periodontal tissue health may improve with use of Invisalign Aligners during your orthodontic treatment.

You can still eat what you want. Because the Aligners are removable you don’t have to worry about what you eat. Call Destiny Dental for more questions or to see if you are a good candidate for Invisilign. They are located at 1720 Destiny Lane and can be reached by phone at 842-3554. Don’t forget to fan them on facebook.

If you have an old Morris Jewelry receipt you can win the contest and a $500 gift certificate to Morris Jewelry. Having been Bowling Green’s longest running Jewelry store for 130 years there are sure to be some old receipts from grandma’s old jewelry box.

What Is the Procedure PRELEX that Bowling Green’s Dr. Rynerson Offers?

1
By Dr. James Rynerson, www.jamesrynersonmd.com/
Thursday, March 17th, 2011 10:00 AM CST
The following is from the office of Dr. James Rynerson on the procedure known as “PRELEX.” Very cool stuff:
If you are over the age of 40 and want to reduce your dependence on reading glasses then PRELEX (Presbyopic Lens Exchange) may be the procedure for you.  Since the natural aging process causes the lens to harden and be less flexible over time making it difficult to focus on near objects we become dependent on reading glasses to see near and up close objects.  PRELEX is a surgery similar to cataract surgery, whereby the surgeon removes the natural lens and replaces it with a multifocal lens, often eliminating the need for glasses.

PRELEX is also an alternative to LASIK for patients with corneas too thin for LASIK, patients who have early cataracts, and patients with very high levels of farsightedness and nearsightedness.
The types of multifocal lenses available are ReSTOR, Rezoom and Technis and Toric.   To find out more information about each of these lenses please click below:
At Rynerson Vision Care in Bowling Green, they can arrange a consultation with Dr. Rynerson to help you determine if any of these procedures would be right for you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the benefits and risks of each procedure, and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Located at 1901 Scottsville Road Bowling Green and a phone call away at (270) 393-0005.

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Cain and Nub cigars are favorite cigars amongst many of the Bowling Green Cigar community. So when it was announced that “Daytona,” the new line Studio Tobac, was set to be launched many were interested. The CAIN DAYTONA is a medium bodied offering blended using only Jalapa Ligeros. Jalapa Valley is Nicaraguas northern most tobacco area. It is well known for producing the country’s most medium and smooth fillers. CAIN DAYTONA takes its flavor profile from this distinct area. The DAYTONA offers a solid medium taste with an abundance of natural smoothness. The result, a creamy cigar with true Nicaraguan taste.

Monday, March 21st Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar will launch the line as Ian from Oliva will be coming through to launch Cain Daytona, the first offering from Studio Tobac. From 5:00pm-8:00pm they will be offering all Cain and Nub items on special, buy 3 get 1 free.

Also, coming to Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar this Thursday for St. Patrick’s Day will be two beers from Three Floyd’s Brewing. Hit the link for ratings from Beer advocate.

Sometimes local businesses an operate in almost anonymity. For some, that’s how INI Printworks has operated in Bowling Green yet, with great acclaim nationwide. We discussed INI Printworks with the boss himself Bryan Bostic.

BLBG When did you open your shop?

Bryan Bostic: 1997

BLBG: How did you get to Bowling Green?

BB: My family moved here right after I graduated from high school and I came with them.  That was in 1994 and I’ve been here since.

BLBG: Who are some of the clients and where do you pull clients from?

BB: Our client base covers the entire nation. We ship nationwide on a daily basis.  Some of our work goes to companies such as Time Warner Cable, E&J Gallo Distillers, Organic Valley, but we also do a lot of work for Universities, Hospitals, Large & Small Events/Concerts all the way down to Individuals.

BLBG: We have many people who are thinking of opening businesses in Bowling Green, how was it for you to open and run a business in Bowling Green?

For us Bowling Green is a great location for our distribution areas.  Our work is mostly out of state so I can’t really comment on the local economy as a supporting role for us, but all in all Bowling Green has been a great place to open and run a business.  Cost to operate is moderate, there is a good pool of employee prospects and availability of goods from suppliers is great as well.

BLBG: What would you say sets you apart from your competition?

BB: We are very good at what we do, we treat our customers and employees more like partners and believe that our growth is a direct reflection on our customers growth.  We always deliver on time and correct.

BLBG: Where did you learn your craft?

BB: I have been doing this for a long time.  I am a naturally gifted fabricator and artist, but I have apprenticed under many masters of their craft as well to expand my skill sets.

One of the shirts they made for Mardi Gras and 440 Main.

INI Printworks is located on 1333 Old Louisville Rd. They specialize in T-Shirts, Shirts, Promotional Materials and other things to help your business, club or civic group. They can print up to 14 colors, offer custom names and numbers in a multitude of colors and place it about anywhere you’d want it. Call them at (270) 796-4906!

The Luck of the Irish Celebrated in Style by way of Party 1 Superstore.

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Slip on some lucky green apparel and decorate your St Paddy’s Day party with Party 1 Superstore’s St Patricks Day Party Supplies. But the origin of green wasn’t always the tradition.

Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, in hopes of making a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from a song of the same name.

Party 1 Superstore doesn’t have any blue shamrocks but you can browse and sort all of their St Patricks Day party supplies and decorations at either location, Scottsville Road or Fairview Avenue. They are sure to have all the St Patricks day supplies you need to create a fantastic St. Patrick’s party.

Party 1 Superstore is rated the best place for Party Supplies and Equipment in Bowling Green and has been rated #1 for the past SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW! So, if you want to just get something green or show your love for St. Patrick’s day… there is only one place to shop for your St. Patrick’s Day party supplies!

Come by either location and get the Party started. 1751 Scottsville Road or 600 US 31W Bypass are stacked with green! For call ahead ordering dial (270) 843-8711.

As many of you heard yesterday in our “Bowling Green Favorites” feature, ‘Great Escape’ now has a new ‘Local Artists’ section. Part of our mantra or slogan is “Eat Local, Play Local, Live Local.” We also want to promote our local artists, visual or performing. That’s why we love the new section.

We also understand we love music no matter where it comes from. We’d love for you to try to keep money local and when it comes to places that invest and promote local, nothing beats the independent record store!

Here is a list of some of the new releases today or in the past few weeks from Great Escape (We’ll link samples if video not shown).

*Bowling Green’s ‘Morning Teleportation’ has a new album ‘Expanding Away’:

*Recently on sale is the new ‘Drive By Truckers’ new album ‘GoGo Boots.’

*Also from Athens is the obvious new R.E.M. album ‘Collapse Into Now.’

S&R Tire Center and Michelin are Saving You Money and Adding Warranties, Just In Time For Spring Break!

1

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Monday, March 14th, 2011 12:00 PM CST

We all know that Spring Break can be fun and stressful. The fun part is spending time with family and friends relaxing and making brand new memories. The stress comes in the travel. Well, your tires and vehicle shouldn’t be a worry this year. This year S&R Tire has your tires covered with a deal from Michelin. Buy four Michelin tires from S&R Tire Center on Lover’s Lane, submit a form and receive a $70 rebate. Good for passenger cars and light trucks. Good: Now through April 6. Plus, while you are in they will check out your vehicle to make sure it’s safe for the long trip.

Not to mention, Michelin North America Inc. is now upping the ante on warranties and customer services, rolling out a “Promise Plan” in the U.S. and Canada that offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, flat-tire-changing assistance for three years and expanded mileage warranties.

The Promise Plan covers Michelin’s full range of passenger and light truck tires — with the exception of the Pilot Sport Cup competition tire line — including tires fitted original equipment on 2011-model new cars and light trucks.

The plan’s features are:

  • 30-day satisfaction guarantee — If customers are not 100-percent satisfied with their purchase, they can bring the tires back to the point of purchase within 30 days for a no-cost exchange, including all mounting and balancing charges, no questions asked.
  • Flat-tire-changing assistance — Consumers call a toll-free number for a qualified service professional to replace a flat tire —with their inflated spare — or request a tow to the nearest Michelin-approved tire dealer of their choice up to 150 miles away 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at no cost.
  • Treadwear mileage warranty — Beginning on March 1st, all standard Michelin passenger and light truck tires (replacement and OE) will be covered by a limited warranty for treadwear. This proviso means Michelin has added mileage warranties to all its consumer tire lines.

The program is the culmination of a process involving consumer surveys and dealer feedback, according to Sheryl Henderson, director, services, passenger/light truck tires for Michelin.

So, come on Bowling Green… support our local auto shops. Keep the money for your car and it’s repairs in the hands of local professionals. Not to mention get great tires from one of the nation’s most well respected tire makers. Just call S&R Tire, located at 1101 Lovers Lane, 270.781.8828

A Shadowbox may be one of the coolest things to display a cherished item. B&J Gallery here in Bowling Green has an award winning frame shop that has mastered the art of the shadowbox. They have won on the Local Level and Recieved Honorable Mention on the International Level with their framing design.

B&J Gallery are members of PPFA (Professional Picture Framers Association) and have the only MCPF (Master Certified Picture Framer) in Kentucky, one of less than 75 in the world.  B&J Gallery will frame your Treasures using the most current framing standards.

“Great Way To Remember Those Boyhood Days!”

They do not use adhesives to secure items in to thier shadowboxes. They take the time to sew them to the mounting board, use a clear film mounting method, padded wire, object mounts or an attachement which is best suited for and will not harm your items.  Everything in their shadowboxes are reversible.  The only exception will be some photographs which are drymounted but only after a duplicate is made or we are told by you the customer this photo can be easily reproduced and you agree to the mounting method.

UK fans loved their 5 NBA draft picks.

They will take the time to help design your shadowbox in a pleasing manner for you, the customer.  B&J Gallery explains the importance of doing no harm to your beloved treasures and helps to insure they remain beloved memories to share with the next generation.

A Great Graduation Gift!

“We hope you will bring your items by for a free consulation and quote” says store owner Robin Gentry,  “A good frame design can not be rushed!”  B&J Gallery is located at 107 Nellums Ave just off Fairview Avenue behind Claassic Paint and WallCovering and PBI Bank. The Following is from ‘Spencer’s Coffeehouse’ owner Justin Shepherd. We love guests writers. Mainly because we’re lazy:

Six years ago, when my wife and I took over operations of what was then called Spencer’s Coffee House on the Square, we thought we were going to be living the dream — drinking fancy coffee, hanging out in the coolest place in Bowling Green, and getting rich (or at least well-off) in the process.

Turns out, selling coffee for a living isn’t easy, and it’s certainly not relaxing. It took me about four years to get a handle on the business, during which time we had two boys, racked up quite a lot of debt, and lost a lot of sleep (mostly the boys’ fault). Then, sometime in 2009, we turned the corner. I credit the years of trial-and-error that eventually built a top-notch team of baristas; a more intense focus on product quality, starting from the coffee and dripping (pardon the pun) throughout the rest of the shop; and a customer base that is beyond comparison — loyal, humble, and as excited about us as we are about them. If you’re among them, THANK YOU.

Who doesn’t miss those weird red lights around the windows?

Here’s just a partial list of what’s changed in six years: We brew coffee about 1.5 gallons at a time, as opposed to about half that (or you can get your cup custom-brewed, but more on that in coming weeks); our espresso and espresso-based drinks are now on par with the best shops in Louisville and Nashville; we’ve adapted our food menu to feature hand-sliced meats and cheeses, as well as Bowling Green’s best quick-serve breakfast sandwiches (have you tried the Sicilian?); we’ve expanded our seating from an original capacity of 26 to about 40 today (and we have about 10 seats left to go); and we’ve streamlined operations, simplified our menu and brightened up the space — all while expanding our hours by nearly 50% and more than doubling the payroll / manhours of 2005-era Spencer’s.

Oh, and we smushed “Coffee House” into one word, “Coffeehouse,” of which I’m particularly proud. Of course, we haven’t gotten rich — but hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?

Probably 50 percent of all our sales go through the espresso machine, so it’s critical that we use one that works well. And while the Argenta — a standard site at smaller cafés around the country — has performed admirably, she’s a little worn out; what’s more, we simply feel our region deserves the very best coffee and espresso to be found, and our well-trained baristas are itching at the chance to go from Cutlass to Cadillac, so to speak. (Actually, it’ll be more like a Ferrari — built with pride in Italy, and boasting modern, sleek styling.)

So be on the lookout, and get your taste buds ready. Because even though we’ve changed a lot in six years, we’ve still got a ways to go… and if recent history’s any indication, it should be a pretty delicious trip.

But back to the positives. We just finished renovation of our main service area — replacing a worn-out, poorly designed plywood-and-formica surface with a custom-built, beautiful (and renewable) bamboo design — and are installing a stainless-steel, fully-refrigerated workspace behind the baristas this weekend. But most exciting for the discerning drinker is what’s next on tap: an appreciative goodbye to our tried-and-true Astoria Argenta espresso machine, and an ecstatic hello to a stabler, more ergonomic and technologically advanced machine.

The one thing I have learned about the Pipe and Cigar store on the square is it should have added, best beer selection in town. For a Pipe and Cigar shop they usually have the best beers that the state has to offer and sometimes before even our local liquor stores have them. Which is a great time to remind everyone, they do sell carry out beer. They also do a great job with tastings of cigars.

This Monday the 7th Jeff from Perdomo will be on hand to help them launch the Patriarch line for cigars from Perdomo. Buy 3 get 1 free will be available for the tasting. Starts at 5pm and will last till at least 7pm, maybe longer.

Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar has added some new beers to the cooler and here are the 7 new ones (I’ve attached the link to beer advocate for reviews and ratings of said beer):

It’s Mardi Gras! Where Can Locals Get Their 3 Essentials Beads, Babies and Bourbon Street Style Mask?

1

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IOyBwrvOKA]

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 10:00 AM CST

If you’re downtown Bowling Green we have our version of Mardi Gras with places like 440 Main and other establishments getting in the Mardi Gras spirit. Bowling Green sure does love a Mardi Gras party and we always hear, “Where can I get some good Beads?” Well, there is only one place in town to get REAL Mardi Gras beads and that’s at the one and only Party 1 Superstore.

“Don’t accept imitations.”

The beads are beautiful and a must for the Mardi Gras participant. There is also the babies they have for sale at the Party 1 Superstore. A baby for the “King Cake” is just a quarter per baby. If you’re asking, “What is a King Cake and why do you need a baby?”

The king cake of the New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition comes in a number of styles. The most simple, said to be the most traditional, is a ring of twisted bread similar to that used in brioche topped with icing or sugar, usually colored purple, green, and gold (the traditional Carnival colors) with food coloring. Cajun king cakes are traditionally deep-fat-fried as a doughnut would be, and there are many variants, some with a filling, the most common being cream cheese and praline.

It has become customary in the New Orleans culture that whoever finds the trinket must provide the next king cake or host the next Mardi Gras party.

Lastly, we have the Bourbon Street Style Mardi Gras masks. These iconic masks are available for you to purchase at ‘Party 1 Superstore.’ I suggest going a different route and grabbing a festive mask that would be worn on Halloween. Not to mention, this is a festival for excess and flashy dress. So, have fun with it and remember, “Laissez les bon temps roule.”

Believe It or Not, Lasik Is Still A Mystery To Some. Rynerson Vision is Here To Help.

1

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 10:00 AM CST

With the process of surgery on a persons an eyes it’s always best to trust those who went to school and were educated for Surgery, no matter what latest news stories say. In Bowling Green we have a very well regarded and award winning doctor performing Lasik on a daily basis with Dr. Rynerson of Rynerson Vision Care. But many today are still confused as to what Lasik actually is or what is involved.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL LASIK?
LASIK is the latest advancement in laser vision correction for those with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  It combines state-of-the-art computer technology with the precision of the excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea and permit light to focus more accurately on the retina without corrective lenses.  LASIK is a brief outpatient procedure that requires only eye drops as an anesthetic, and many patients report improved vision within 24 hours.

HOW DOES LASIK WORK?
During LASIK, the excimer laser emits a cool ultra-violet light beam that accurately targets the area to be treated without damaging surrounding tissue.  Each pulse of the laser disrupts molecular bonds between corneal cells to precisely remove tissue.  The amount of refractive alteration required determines how much tissue is removed.  Often, removing tissue about the thickness of a human hair will achieve the proper amount of visual correction.

THE LASIK PROCEDURE
A microkeratome is used to create a thin flap of corneal tissue.
The flap is laid back to access the inner layers of the cornea.
The excimer laser beam is directed to the areas of the cornea that need reshaping to improve vision.
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE LASIK?
If you are considering LASIK, we want you to know what to expect from the procedure.

BEFORE
Dr. Rynerson and his staff will perform a comprehensive eye examination to make sure your eyes are healthy and to determine the extent of your nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.  Precise measurements will be taken to establish the surgical plan and predict the amount of correction you will be able to achieve through LASIK.

DURING
You will recline in a specially designed chair and be given eye drops to completely numb your eye.  An eyelid holder will be placed between your lids to prevent blinking.  You will remain awake during the procedure and be instructed to look directly at a light above you.

This positions your eyes with our operating microscope and allows Dr. Rynerson to precisely direct the laser beam at the areas of the cornea that need to be reshaped to improve your vision.

Next, Dr. Rynerson will use a special instrument, called a microkeratome, to create a thin protective flap of corneal tissue.  He will gently lay this flap back, then treat the inner layer of the cornea with the laser beam.  Typically, this takes just a few moments, after which the corneal flap is returned to its original position where it will heal without the need for stitches.

AFTER
You will be instructed to rest your eyes at home for about 24 hours.  You will also be informed about what to do, what not to do, and things to watch for during the initial healing period.  By the day following surgery, you will probably be able to resume your normal activities, with vision that is already beginning to improve.

IS LASIK AFFORDABLE?

LASIK is very affordable.  With traditional LASIK there is no fee for your initial consultation and evaluation, and the price of your LASIK surgery includes the actual surgery and your follow-up care.  Plus, they offer a variety of attractive financing options they will be happy to discuss with you.

IS LASIK RIGHT FOR ME?

The decision to have LASIK is ultimately yours.  LASIK patients need a healthy cornea and a prescription that has remained stable for at least a year.  Those with certain medical conditions and pregnant women are generally not considered good candidates.

You also need to have a realistic expectation for LASIK and remember that the goal is to reduce or eliminate your dependence on corrective lenses.  LASIK, usually, but not always, produces 20/20 vision.  They cannot correct presbyopia, the natural aging of the eye that may require the use of reading glasses.

At Rynerson Vision Care in Bowling Green, they can arrange a consultation with Dr. Rynerson to help you determine if LASIK is right for you.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the benefits and risks of LASIK, and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Behind The Bar: “Spencer’s Latte’

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9ZlGRhOgvU]

Spencer’s Latte Recipe:

The ‘barista’ (fancy term for someone skilled at brewing espresso) grinds and brews espresso, generally 1 or 2 ounces, directly into a preheated ceramic cup. He or she also steams and textures whole milk to 150 degrees, creating a layer of silky microfoam within the pitcher of milk. This is then poured carefully into the cup with the espresso, taking care not to break the layer of crema that tops (and is the mark of) the well-brewed espresso. Served on a saucer. Variations include the popular vanilla latte (made with the addition of vanilla syrup), mocha latte (with the addition of rich chocolate sauce), and many others.
Enjoy!

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

Morris Jewelry in the month of march is looking for the ‘oldest’ receipt for a chance to win a $500 gift card to Morris Jewelry. If you have an old Morris Jewelry receipt you can win the contest. Having been Bowling Green’s longest running Jewelry store for 130 years there are sure to be some old receipts from grandma’s old jewelry box.

Why receipts? Well, the larger purchases by a family member (and usually more sentimental) tend to have receipts saved. So get digging. You may find that family heirloom’s receipt could win you a $500 gift card.

Head over to Morris Jewelery. They’ve been serving Bowling Green for 130 years. Located at 408 E. Main Street on Fountain Square. Open 9am-6pm Monday through Friday and 10am-6pm on Saturday.

Candle Maker’s On The Square, Also Offers High Quality Soap!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Sometimes the name of a store can make people think they carry a singular item. The example is seen at Candle Maker’s on The Square. I remember the first time I entered years ago to be surprised by seeing their soaps. Now, with the new location there is so much to see. Still, other than their signature item, candles, they do a great job with soaps.

They have a variety of different fragrances in the soaps including but not limited to Blue Bayou, Love Potion, Egyptian Incense, Patchouli, Honeydew Melon, Kiwi Cucumber, Pina Colada, Honeysuckle, Warm Amber, White Linen, White Tea and many more.  The prices for the specialty soaps are very competitive with your mall style (non-local) chain stores. are For 2.5 oz it’s $2.75 or 4 oz. for $4.75.  They also have cream based soaps or hemp based soaps all hand poured in the shop.

Downtown Bowling Green recently saw ‘Candle Makers’ move down the row on the square to 417 Park Row. So escape the mall and big box stores for your local candle and soap maker. You can also pick up various other locally crafted soaps, gifts, puzzles, pieces of art Jewelry and of course candles.

Get to Candle Maker’s on The Square, 417 Park Row or call them at 270-843-3001. A candle (and soap) lovers paradise!

Why Yes, The Capitol Arts Theater Can Be Rented Out.

I’ve always been fond of the Theater. No matter if it’s a cinema, an acted out play or a musical I enjoy my time in the presence of theatrical art. Bowling Green’s Capitol Theater on the square has played host to numerous musicians and comedians through the years as well as plays and musicals.

Many are shocked when I tell them the Capitol can also be used for corporate events and EVEN WEDDINGS! The Capitol Arts Theatre is located at 416 East Main Street on Fountain Square in historic downtown Bowling Green. The theatre seats approximately 800 patrons and retains the Art Deco style and decor of its 1930s renovation.

‘The Old Capitol Sign, wonder what happened to it.”

The Capitol Arts Center has an illustrious history of supporting arts and culture in the south central Kentucky community.

Originally built as a vaudeville house in the late 1890s, the Columbia Theatre was redesigned as a movie house in the mid-1930s and renamed the Capitol Theatre. Presenting movies for more than three decades, the Capitol Theatre closed its doors in 1967.

Sadly it sat vacant for more than 10 years. The building was purchased in 1977 by a visionary group of citizens formerly known as the Bowling Green-Warren County Arts Commission.

Following a $1.3 million renovation project, the Capitol Arts Center opened its doors to the community in September 1981. So, how does this bedrock of cultural history available for rent?

In order that the Capitol Arts Center may properly serve the community, the Capitol Arts Alliance may grant the use of the building at a predetermined cost to responsible associations for rehearsals, performances, lectures, entertainment, and recreational purposes which are deemed proper by the Capitol Arts Alliance. The facility may be used only after all procedures and policies are followed and signed by the Capitol Arts Alliance and association representatives through written contract. The Capitol Arts Alliance reserves the right to refuse rental based on the appropriateness of the attraction as governing the rental or use of the Capitol Arts Center.

All you have to do is contact them for more information to receive a rental application at (270) 782-2787.

Contact Rob Hatcher, Technical Director for more information about about the theatre facilities and equipment at (270) 782-2787 or rob.hatcher@capitolarts.com

Grinstead’s Flooring and Furnishing, Hiring Local and Coming To Your Home to Serve You.

Thursday, February 24th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

The one thing we noticed when we started this project of promoting local businesses was the amount of local businesses hire local people to their small business. One of our partners is Grinstead’s flooring a furnishing and they hire exclusively local workers to our region. With 2 sales representatives (plus Owner, Gary Grinstead) who are from Warren County and at any time three crews of two that do their installs the staff is comprised of neighbors who want to help make Bowling Green beautiful, one home at a time. So when you shop at Grinstead’s you know that most of the dollars you spend not only go back in local taxes but, that they are going to pay for the hard work of local workers and salespeople.

With this local staff at Grinstead’s you receive the customer service that is all but a memory in many of the big out of town box stores. You get people who make it a point to know your needs and wants and to try to achieve those needs an wants. It’s not rare to see a Grinstead’s sales representative arriving to a home to measure the job and to bring samples to their home so they can see what the flooring will look like in that person’s home.

Grinstead’s sales reps help you guide through this very important process because they know how important it is to get the job done right the first time. Same goes for the install crew. Many of these crews have been working with Gary at Grinstead’s for years. Gary has made it his mission to be well versed in the latest in the industry and to have a crew that is well prepared to take you from step one to finish of the project.

Please be sure to check out Grinstead’s Flooring and Furnishings online or at their store located at 1353 Old Louisville Road. If you’d like to Gary or one of the helpful staff at Grinstead’s they can be reached in Bowling Green at 270.843.1072. I’ve never seen anyone excited to pay an expensive gas or electric bill. Maybe that’s why so many people are falling in love with Capitol Window and Door’s ‘Eclipse’ replacement double hung replacement windows. Made by ‘Earthwise’ the vinyl windows bare a similar nature of their namesake, ‘The Eclipse.’ Along with the beauty of a lunar eclipse, the energy of the sun is blocked by earth or moon. The Eclipse Window blocks the escape of costly energy within your home, leaving you with a comfortable, controlled setting throughout the year.

‘Earthwise Eclipse look good in the bathroom.’

It has a beautiful design with contour lines and sculpted millwork features, The Eclipse will give your home a fresh clearly elegant look. Beyond style is is a fully welded vinyl window with the most technologically advance design and thermal performance of any window in the industry.

Being a product by Earthwise has it’s definite advantages. Earthwise windows are guaranteed to last a lifetime and will improve the comfort and appearance of your home. So, make the intelligent choice when window shopping. Choose Bowling Green’s oldest window store (hey, they made windows for so many years, they know what they are doing) and choose and an Earthwise Window. Call Capitol Window and Door at 842-9421 or come by their show room at 202 State Street downtown. You can also visit Capitol Window and Door online at www.capitolwindowanddoor.com to view all they offer.

We Totally Facebook Stalked Bowling Green’s Deadman Shoes.

‘The shoes that caught our attention.’

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Sometimes ‘Buying Local’ is not always at a brick and mortars store. Sometimes we find out about businesses through our facebook account or twitter feed and that’s how we found out about Deadman Shoes in Bowling Green. Recently, YellowBerri (Bowling Green promotions & creative talent agency) did a promotion with Deadman Shoes and thus our stalking occurred.

We talked with Nathan about his art that you can wear and where it all started. “I Started doing shoes probably 7 or 8 months ago. I was at the time drawing things on an old pair of pants and I had just made my own shirt a bit before that. So I thought I should finish the whole thing with a pair of my own shoes. When I showed my mom she gave me a pair of her shoes to do something to and it just built from there.

“A clock Nathan made, and he cut the wood himself. Painted in acrylic and will have a counterpart soon. The Digital Robot Clock. It has battery powered clock and is meant to be wall mounted.”

When you see his artwork, from shoes to wood, you see a style that is very modern. We were interested in his background and what inspired his art work. “Things like “Ahh! Real Monsters” inspired me. I have no formal College background in art. So, I’m self taught through filling lots of sketch books and receipt paper from when I work at a grocery store. One artist I’ve been inspired by since I was in middle school is Alex Pardee, His work has influenced my style over the years.”

Some of you may wonder where you can get a hold of Nathan to get either a piece of art or commission a pair of shoes. We know we did, “Well the best way to get in touch is through facebook,” said Nathan. As far as looking to order some shoes I do most of that through an account on Etsy.

“More awesome shoes.”

Nathan does most of his work by commission. Come to him with an idea he will help create it with his vision. He does not do copyright material so, no “Tinkerbell” or “Buzz Lightyears.” But, that doesn’t mean he can’t do a spaceman or fairy. As it gets warmer he will start to do some painting on wood.

‘A piece he did on wood and something he could do for you.”

Don’t be afraid to support local artists like Nathan. This is a great example of the beauty in our art community. We need to keep our community thriving with unique artists who will think out the box. Hey, with Deadman Shoes you can wear the art outside the shoe box. I know, it was a bad joke on even this end.

Candle Makers On The Square, Helping Us To Appreciate The Rain.

“Candle Makers On The Square’s New Location”

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

‘Kentucky rain keeps pouring down,
And up ahead’s another town that I’ll go walking through
With the rain in my shoes, searchin for you
In the cold Kentucky rain, in the cold Kentucky rain.’

-The Southern Philosopher Elvis

There is something about the smell of Rain. How it has a smell of clean air. How it washes away all that was making us feel dirty or something that needed made to be made new. Soon the rain will help wake our slumbering trees and plants to their bright and vibrant nature on a warm spring day. That’s why when I got the email from ‘Candle Maker’s On The Square’ (which you should be on their email list) about their fragrance of the week being ‘Rain,’ it made me smile.

We’ve talked in the past about the great beauty, art and science that Candle Makers puts into each candle but, certain scents also bring out certain moods. Much like certain music sets the tone for an afternoon at home or a night of relaxation. With the upcoming spring days and obvious spring cleaning that will come from mother nature outside and for ourselves as we set the inside of our home for spring, isn’t it time to get a new candle from one of our favorite candle, art, soap and gift store on the square?

Remember, when you buy your candles on the square at ‘Candle Makers’ you should feel good knowing they are triple scented and contain 10% fragrance no matter the size of the candle. That means they are 6 times stronger than your typical commercial candles (no matter the cost of the candle). Check them out on the square at 417 Park Row. You can also call them at 843-3001.

Don’t Worry, We’re Not Trying To Be Political. Bowling Green Local’s New Book Officially Released Today.

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 10:00 AM CST

At Buy Local Bowling Green we do not promote any political events or ideology. We do however promote books by local authors when we are made aware of it. Senator Rand Paul’s much anticipated ‘The Tea Party Goes To Washington’ came out today, officially. Some copies were sent out early but, today is the official launch day.

The book is said to lay out the tea party platform for limited government and balanced budgets. It also tells of his time in Bowling Green and how great this city is to raise a family so, for that no matter the political affiliation we can appreciate the message of how great it is to live and work in Bowling Green. Let’s also remember he was more recently a local business owner in Bowling Green.

Since I am not interested in a political debate (we are not that kind of website) you can see a review of the book here and here. Sorry, no local papers in state have reviewed it yet.

We do encourage anybody that knows of any art, literature or music that will be released by Bowling Green artists, writers or musicians to let us know. This is an area where we can all hope we see success to come from.

Junkyard Gypsies brings Funky, Unique and Eclectic Items To New Bowling Green Location!

“The new home of Junkyard Gypsies”

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

A hidden gem of Bowling Green just decided to be not so hidden this month. Many of us loved to shop at the two houses on Kenton Street known as “Junkyard Gypsies” but, now they’ve moved on out and to bigger and more noticeable digs over on 31 W not more than a half mile away from their most recent location. From someone who loved the old store, this new store is even better. Great open spaces to see the antique gold that ‘Junkyard Gypsies’ offers.

In a world of consignment stores of a sluggish economy, this one is different. It’s a mix between a museum, antique store, novelty store, hobby store and an art gallery. I liken it to a store packed with the things that make you excited to watch History Channel’s ‘American Pickers’ and ‘Pawn Stars.’ Lots of stuff from your childhood and stuff that would just look very hip in your home.

“This is not your average consignment store, this is hip and trendy.”

The recycled beauty of the merchandise makes this just a must see in Bowling Green. To be honest, who cares about the economy…. I’d shop here in the must positive economic times. Kellie Steen and Kim Simpson have created a new “must see” in Bowling Green!

The ladies do have quite a few people that consign with them but, they are selective on what pieces are coming in. Junk they LOVE: Old, funky retro, vintage items! Junk they DON”T love: Anything country! That means no wooden hearts or tater bins! Brass, lamps without shades, hunter green/maroon/teal items, dirty items, nonworking items, appliances, bedding and curtains unless they are really, really cute and clean. Just remember their slogan, “Funky, unique, eclectic items and furniture for your home.”

They will many times have great sells and new stuff is always coming in and out of the store. I am glad to see we have a proper store that can not only restore the history of some great pieces but, make you happy just shopping in the store. They have a great area for parking behind their new location at 1022 31W Bypass. You can also reach them at 270.781.JUNK (5865)

Forgive me while I history geek out, the photo above is of William Goebel speaking in Bowling Green. He is one of the most notorious Governors in Kentucky history. Killing a man in a shootout before being elected, he was assassinated just after being elected. I just obtained a book about him, William Goebel ‘Politics of Wrath’ (You can pick up through WKU Store) and a must read for Kentucky history enthusiasts.

There are no “bait and switch” practices with Rynerson Vision Care. Many so-called discount LASIK centers (Many advertising from other surrounding and major cities) heavily advertise a very low price, but the price goes up dramatically with just minimal levels of refractive errors and also charge extra for post-op exams and enhancements.

Rynerson Vision Care believes these practices to be deceptive and unethical.  Our traditional surgical fee includes all postoperative care for one year and lifetime retreatments when you receive your annual exam from Dr. Rynerson.
“Don’t miss out on the great years because of bad eye sight.”
As one of their core values, Rynerson Vision places the safety issue at the top of the list.  They do not compromise on safety and your safety is of paramount importance.  For instance unlike other providers they will treat each eye individually with freshly sterilized instrumentation and new disposables for each patient (other centers re-use disposables instead of discarding them.)  Dr. Rynerson is also well versed with dealing with patients who have had a less than ideal outcome from other centers.  At Rynerson Vision Care….They Look After You!

Learn about their services and obtain further information about LASIK, LASEK, PRK, phakic implants, corneal transplants, keratoconus, cataract surgery, crystal lens surgery and correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia, customized individualized treatments, treatment of aberrations and reduction of night vision problems. “Dr. Steve Robertson working hard, giving back during ‘Give Kids A Smile.'”

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

One of the great things about local businesses is they also think and give back locally more times than out of town businesses. It’s simple to see the reason why, they live here. Destiny Dental at the beginning of this month participated in the ADA’s “Give Kids A Smile.” Destiny Dental has been an active participant from the very beginning of this program which is designed to deliver full dental care to children who ‘fall through the cracks”. The ADA’s Give Kids A Smile® program enhances the oral health of large numbers of needy children. Give Kids A Smile activities also highlight for policy makers the ongoing challenges that low-income families face in finding dental care.  These kids come from families with no dental insurance or third party coverage, such as medicaid. It also has grown with the downswing in our economy and sadly, trips to the dentist usually suffers when the family finances grow tight.

This year Destiny Dental $20,178 worth of dental work for free for our local kids! I hope you will call them and thank them for this great program and work they did to give back to our community. In seven years, through this activity, Destiny Dental has been able to provide preventive and restorative dental care to 100+ children, totaling over $60,000.00 in donated dental services.

“Dr. Gina Davis helping a kid during ‘Give Kids A Smile.'”

“The reason most kids miss school is because of tooth decay, it’s largely ignored and it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact it’s the #1 reason kids miss school,” says Dr. Steve Robertson. It’s a beautiful thing to give back and Destiny Dental has done a great thing with this event.

This past week we visited with one of Buy Local Bowling Green’s partners, ‘Grinstead’s Flooring and Furnishing.’ We talked with owner Gary Grinstead, “I just returned from Tunica, Mississippi where we had a floor covering show. We have lots of new products on the way with lots of great prices.”

Sample of Tarkett products

Some of those great prices are 99 cents per square foot on Tarkett Laminate. Also there will be carpet starting at 44 cents per square foot.

When you look at warranties, Quick Step laminate will come with a 30 year warranty for residential and 3 year warranty for light commercial. The Quick Step Laminate will be $1.79 per foot.

“That’s just the start, we have many new products coming” said Gary Grinstead.

Thursday, February 10th, 2011 7:00 AM CST

Kentucky CPS has teamed up with Dejavoo Systems to offer the latest technology for business owners in accepting credit cards. Now it doesn’t matter if you have a power cord or a phone line. As long as you can get cell service you can go anywhere for shows, expos, conferences, fundraisers, road side assistance, deliveries or in home calls to make a sale. Since Credit Cards are a global function we suggest using a local provider for services. Here are some of the devices you can receive from Kentucky CPS & Dejavoo:

The Dejavoo M5 is a business enabler accepting payment anywhere. Small foot print, build in Pin device, fast printer, back lit keyboard and display, the M line is the ideal wireless terminal. Dejavoo connections to Transaction Payment Gateways as well as its Value Added Server accede any desk top or other wireless terminal and in fact give merchants more options to improve and complete their business needs, on the go!

Dejavoo’s X Line of terminals allows users to securely access a broad set of new applications. Ask “What can my terminals do for me in excess of Card Processing?” Dejavoo features unrivaled connectivity with its Front End Ware (FEW) OEM server to facilitate constant ongoing communication between Dejavoo terminals and various back end applications improving satisfaction, retention and most importantly promoting and generating residual income for ISO’s and merchants.

The Dejavoo C5 has been designed to meet key payment needs. This compact terminal offers a valuable price- performance ratio for new merchants and merchants needing to replace non-compliant terminals with the latest security, innovation and attractive price.

The next generation in credit card processing is available in Bowling Green and our local store owners can beat the big box stores to the punch on this technological advance.

February means three things, in this order: Groundhog Day (come on, Phil!), Super Bowl (come on, Philly!), and Valentine’s Day. As a barista, I don’t have a whole lot to say about the first two, but I do know a thing or two about Valentine’s Day.
“Drink Your Heart Out.”
You see, a well-made latte is the perfect nightcap — or preview to a nightcap, if you catch my drift — for a night out with your special someone. After a candlelight dinner, and maybe a movie or show, why not enjoy the rich flavors of exquisitely textured milk, rich espresso, and possibly a sweet little touch of honey, vanilla or chocolate? There’s a lot to love in a latte… and who knows? Sitting together over coffee might be the loveliest part of this loveliest holiday.
‘Justin “From Spencers” puts heart in every Latte he serves.’

Linda B. Thomas Local Business Attorney Gives Great Advice to Local Business Owners!

0

By Linda Thomas, Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 7:00 AM CST

“STARTING A BUSINESS?  CHOOSE BOWLING GREEN!”

Looking to start a business?  If so, you could not find a city more business friendly than Bowling Green!

To begin the journey that will make your dream into reality, you should seek the advice of a local business attorney.  You want to be prepared for the difficulties which start up will bring; and protect your personal assets from loss if things don’t go as you hope.

Most local business attorneys will be happy to give you a low cost or free initial consultation.  Kentucky recognizes multiple types of businesses–sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies—but only corporations and limited liability companies will afford protection for your personal assets.  With the sole proprietorship, your business is you, and legal liabilities are yours.  With a partnership, each partner individually shares liability.

Corporations and limited liability companies (“LLCs”) are entities which are separate from you personally; and as such, can shield your personal assets from liabilities if properly formed and maintained.  Corporations have shareholders and Boards of Directors; LLCs have members who may also be managers, and instead of share certificates, ownership of LLCs is evidenced by non-certificated percentages of ownership or membership interests.

Corporations are an older form of legal entity, for which a large body of law has developed; LLCs have a smaller body of law because they are relatively new in Kentucky.  Corporations are required to have at least annual written minutes of their Boards of Directors and shareholders; however, these are not required for LLCs.  Both corporations and LLCs can act by written “Consents” which memorialize actions agreed to by members or corporate Directors and shareholders shown by their signatures on the consent.  Financial institutions require a Consent empowering an officer or member to sign documents in order to make a loan to a business.

Both corporations and LLCs register with the Kentucky Secretary of State; and must have names which are distinguishable from names already in use in the Secretary’s database.  Both entities must file an annual report which names the entity’s agent for service of process (the person who receives the complaint if the entity is sued), and identifies corporate officers or LLC management.   The filing fee for the corporate or LLC annual report is $15.00; and annual reports must be filed by June 30 of each year.  Failure to file a report will result in dissolution of your entity, and an expensive reinstatement process.

Tax wise, both corporations and LLCs can be structured in a variety of ways, including without limitation the entity filing separate tax returns and providing you individually a K-1; or “Subchapter S” so that the entity’s income and losses are shown on your individual tax return.   Your business attorney will consult with your accountant to assist you to choose the form of entity which is best for you as a start up business.  The taxation of the entity does not affect its ability to shield your personal assets from liability.  The tax structure can be changed over time as your business needs change.

Stay tuned for more information on starting your business.  You could not choose a friendlier place to begin!

The Best-One Tire & Service Group is one of the largest groups of independent tire dealers in the United States. S&R Tire is Best One Tire & Service Groups chosen dealer for the Bowling Green area. So, how are these independent and locally owned tire dealers giving the benefits of a locally owned business and also keeeping up to compete with the big tire giants?

In today’s market no dealer can stock every tire made, but Best One’s 22 distribution centers ensure that Best-One retailers have the tire you want at the price you deserve.  Additionally, they make up more than 250 retail locations — in 14 different states — which makes  S&R Tire part of the largest Bridgestone, Firestone, Dayton, Yokohama, Mastercraft, and Bandag dealer in the country.

They are also among the largest purchasers of Continental, General, and Goodyear tires in the United States.

“Click the picture to get the name of each location.”

So, feel safe knowing S&R Tire is working hard with other local tire dealers to get you the best price possible and keeping that service you’ve come to love.

Sound Lion: Locally owned music website.

“A Music Social Network Driven By The Fans, For Fans,” is how the Bowling Green based music website SoundLion.com is described by those running the website. Ranging from a media player to play music on to music reviews it’s a Cornucopia of music and if your a music lover you should enjoy it.

Here is a sampling of one of their reviews. It’s a review by Ricky Adams of SoundLion.com reviewing Bowling Green based Alt-Rock Band ‘Cage the Elephant.’

Up and Coming Kentucky rockers Cage the Elephant just released their second studio album under Relentless Records. The boys from Bowling Green have been hard at work touring the United States and Europe to climb the ranks of music, opening for bands as successful as The Stone Temple Pilots. The band’s new album, Thank You Happy Birthday, is proof their hard work is paying off. After the release of their first self-titled album, Cage was received with open arms into the UK’s rock n roll scene. Lesser known in the states, singles like “Aint no rest for the Wicked” and “Back Against the Wall” did bring the band some commercial success. It seems their stock will keep rising with fans when Thank You Happy Birthday hits their headphones. The opening track, “Always Something”, combines electronic beats with front man Matt Shultz’s chilling vocals and kicks the album off perfectly. Thank you Happy Birthday then begins to surprise the listener track after track as the band brings something new to the table with every song. For those who want to get loud (and let’s face it, who doesn’t) “Sabertooth Tiger” and “Indy Kidz” will more than satisfy even the most diehard head bangers out there. However, the band also shows their range by slowing it down in tracks like “Rubber Ball” and the album’s final track “Flow.” Thank You Happy Birthday‘s first single, and possibly the album’s best track, “Shake Me Down”, could be the song Cage the Elephant needs to take it over the top. The album as a whole is a positive step forward for the boys from Bowling Green and despite what their name may say about them, this band’s success cannot be caged in for much longer. 4/5.

Young Actors & Musicians Needed for Capitol Arts Youth Theatre’s ‘Odyssey.’

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 12:00 PM CST

The Capitol Arts Youth Theatre are holding audition for their spring production of “Odyssey”, a contemporary “Cirque-du-Soleil” style adaptation of Homer’s “Odyssey”. The show will be directed by Carol Jordan and choreographed by Ashley Gentry, with original music by Connor McDonald. Auditions will be 6:00-8:00 PM next Monday on January 31st & Tuesday February 1st. You only have to attend one evening but be prepared to stay the entire time. Auditions are open to anyone in grades 2nd-12th, and a complete audition packet is posted on the CAYT Facebook page and the Capitol website at www.capitolarts.com.

They are looking for actors, dancers, and musicians, as well as folks with any special “circus” skills such as juggling, gymnastics, etc. Message Carol Herin Jordan if you’d like to see a copy of the script.

If you play an instrument, CAYT would love to have you audition for Odyssey! They may be able to work in pretty much any instrument, but they’re especially looking for folks who play percussion, clarinet, violin, saxophone and trombone. If you play a portable, non-percussion instrument, just bring it with you to auditions. They may ask you to play a few scales or a brief musical selection.

Candle Maker’s On The Square Making Hand Poured Candle With A Longer Lasting Fragrance.

1

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

The other day I was asked about Candle Makers On The Square after we had written about their extensive lines of fragrances. I was asked what kind of candles they use and how long will the fragrances last? They are Parisian candles and the ones that are poured at Candle Makers in Bowling Green are built to keep their fragrance.

Some places use soy candles but they are not capable of keeping their fragrance strength. Candle Makers also hand pours their candles in a 24 hour process to create a candle perfect for you. Compare that with dipped candles where most dipped candles only have fragrance on the outside layer.

“Valentine’s day candles! What a great idea.”

When you buy your candles on the square you should feel good knowing they are triple scented and contain 10% fragrance no matter the size of the candle. That means they are 6 times stronger than your typical commercial candles (no matter the cost of the candle). Commercial candles have only portions that contain fragrance where as the craftsmanship and time put in at Candle Makers on the square allows fragrance to be placed all through the candle.

This allows you to enjoy the candle’s fragrance the same way, no matter if it’s the last time you burn it or the first time you light the candle. Check them out on the square at 417 Park Row. You can also call them at 843-3001.

Info for this came from this website: Click for link Here is how it will work:

The Process:

1.  Click here to submit your Small Business Specialty License Plate Application online. The application may also be printed out (and then mailed to PEAK) by clicking here.

2.  PEAK collects the applications and a $25.00 application fee for each specialty small business license plate ordered.

2.  Once 900 applications are gathered and upon proper verification and final approval by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the plates will be produced.

3.  A postcard mailer will be sent to applicants notifying them that they may go to their county clerk’s office to pick up their small business specialty license plate.

The license plate can’t be produced until 900 applications have been received.  Therefore, you may not receive your plate immediately.  Updates will be posted on PEAK’s web site and Facebook page at: http://peakky.org and .http://www.facebook.com/PEAKKY

Submit only $25.00 per plate with your application, but note that applicants will need to pay an additional $19 to their county clerk for each standard small business specialty license plate when the plate is picked up.  Therefore, the total cost for a standard plate (non-customized) is $44 ($25 initial application fee to PEAK plus $19 to your county clerk when you pick up your plate).

PEAK will receive $10.00 from each plate ordered and 100% of those funds will go to support small and micro business development initiatives in Kentucky.

PEAK

Attn: Special Projects Acct

P.O. Box 1772

Frankfort, KY 40602-1772

Monday, January 17th, 2011 12:00 PM CST

Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar started “Ladies of the Leaf” meeting last Monday. The event was a success and just after the meeting, Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar added a new beer, Lindemans Pomme Lambic, to their extensive beer options.

The beer is a apple tasting beer that has been likened to a champagne. Very tart since it’s almost like a green apple. If you like ciders or fruit tasting drinks, you’ll really like this. Want to know what smoke would be great with this? Ask Chris during the Ladies of the Leaf meeting tonight!

So, if you get some free time tonight or this week, swing by and try their new beer. If you are a lady and would like to have a great time learning about great beer and cigars or pipe tobacco, tonight should be a fun time. Starts at 5pm and will probably close around 9pm.

‘The Working Wilsons,’ Old World Craftsmanship in A Digital Age!

0

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Friday, January 14th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Recently we sat down with Matt Wilson of ‘The Working Wilsons’ a husband and wife design team in Bowling Green. We discussed philosophy of design, misconceptions of small town designers and just marketing in general.
“The male portion of ‘The Working Wilsons’ the other is actually working.”
Buy Local: What do you think of this title for the interview? “‘The Working Wilsons,’ The Bonnie and Clyde of Design!”
Matthew Wilson: Does that mean we rob people?
BL: Basically. Do The Working Wilsons’ have a facebook page?
MW: No. We don’t. I guess we should, huh. We do have Bowling Green, Somebodies Gotta Live Here (Editors note: It’s a pro Bowling Green site you should check out) and Boy and His Brain.
BL: Well, we’ve already started, so I came across a great quote from the famous designer, Paul Rand where he said, “Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.”
MW: I like him. Do you know the famous designer Milton Glaser? This was a life changing or career changing quote for me. It made me feel secure in my philosophy of aesthetics.
“LESS IS NOT NECESSARILY MORE.

Being a child of modernism I have heard this mantra all my life. Less is more. One morning upon awakening I realised that it was total nonsense, it is an absurd proposition and also fairly meaningless. But it sounds great because it contains within it a paradox that is resistant to understanding. But it simply does not obtain when you think about the visual of the history of the world. If you look at a Persian rug, you cannot say that less is more because you realise that every part of that rug, every change of colour, every shift in form is absolutely essential for its aesthetic success. You cannot prove to me that a solid blue rug is in any way superior. That also goes for the work of Gaudi, Persian miniatures, art nouveau and everything else. However, I have an alternative to the proposition that I believe is more appropriate. ‘Just enough is more.’” -Milton Glaser

BL: Why did that change your view?

MW: Same reason for him. You hear “less is more” in design school all the time and minimalism just isn’t how I approach things. I get really tired of it. Trying to create what is appropriate for the project is how I think design/illustration should be approached.

BL: So how does that influence you on logos or brochures?

MW: Well, you have to make people want to read it so you make it engaging.BL: How did you get involved with the SOKY Happenings?

MW: well, I thought Bowling Green needed something like SOKY happenings – so I offered to help out. It just so happened that I was working for E+F (Earnhardt and Friends now Werkshop) so Tim latched on to it and we ended up doing the identity for the magazine too. so we kinda art directed it for a bit. I just did the cover art for 5 or six months, well, I guess longer than that…I can’t remember.

BL: How does your wife play a role in making Working Wilsons move past just the art and design phase?

MW: Sarah is really professional. She the business brain. She’s a jack of all trades & makes me secure in going out on a limb and challenging myself to learn. She’s just…brilliant. I  had no idea how to do anything on the internet. she’s really smart and learns at an amazing rate. so she just taught herself all the html & css, the email & online marketing and helped me get a portfolio online. I usually handle all the ‘artsy’ design stuff, though she’s a really rad designer and very capable.

We don’t exactly work “together” meaning, we don’t work on the same projects..but she’s my support team & I’m always there for her to work on stuff if she needs it (and she’s always helping me code things on my website.)

BL: When you guys do a project, obviously, many people look out of town. How do you beat out those in the “Bigger Cities” since there is a perception that marketing design is bigger, thus better there?

MW: well, we don’t really compete. we have our little network of contacts.

BL: Sure, you’ve done a great job on marketing locally and have a good contact base but, there is still a misconception of small town design firms, no?

MW: We have worked in the design & marketing biz for awhile and worked for large corporations. we are competitive. we just choose to live here. Yes, people have a tendency think that small is somehow inferior and I can see how larger cities just tend to have more options but that doesn’t always reflect the ‘quality’ of businesses in smaller towns – but in design you’re paying for the people.

BL: If there are any people out there looking for a redesign of their companies image what advice would you give them?

MW: well, no advice. I’d just ask them “why?” why do you want a redesign? what isn’t working for you? Don’t discount your current branding & client recognition.

BL: What about those who are creating a new business?

MW: well, that’s a different story all together. advice. hmmm. It’s an investment and a more visible investment than the office furniture that you’re lusting over. You get what you pay for – 🙂

BL: Well, Speaking of that. What should they look for in a designer?

MW: Well, I tend to think that ‘choosing a designer’ could be a lot more than people make it out be. We aren’t just hands to move stuff around on a page. A lot of designers are also really smart people. Good marketers & good business people. It should be a relationship – more collaborative than it some times turns out to be.

Spencer’s Coffee House: ‘Ten Years Young.’

0

By R.Justin, FoodCoffeeLife.com, Spencer’s Coffee House           Thursday, January 13th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

This time ten years ago, I was a sophomore journalism major at Western Kentucky University. I spent my days in class, my nights frequenting a dim, smoky little coffeeshop on Main Avenue called The Java House. It was the stereotypical hippy sort of hangout — chess games, cigarette smoke, old frayed sofas and lots of angst-ridden amateur philosophy. I didn’t know anything about coffee at the time, but I did know this: aside from the café section at Barnes & Noble, it was the only coffeeshop in Bowling Green, and since I wasn’t into the bar scene, it’s where I spent my time.

“Justin From Spencer’s.”

Sometime midsummer of 2001, a cool young couple named Jeff and Tara Leake opened a new coffeeshop, just around the corner from the Java House. They named it after their infant son, and Spencer’s Coffeehouse was born. I soon became a regular, and friends with the Leakes, and in early 2005, my wife, Shelley, and I bought their little business.

I never envisioned it would become so big, both in my life and in the life of our community.

Back then, Spencer’s was a 7a-5p joint, with later hours on Friday and Saturday, and closed on Sunday. Today, Spencer’s is open for more than 100 hours each week. We’ve expanded our menu, added seats, and in 2010 our annual sales were more than double what they were in 2005.

“Mr. and Mrs. Justin from Spencer’s.”

Most significantly, however, we’ve educated hundreds of self-proclaimed coffee lovers on what a great cup of coffee actually tastes like — and how to replicate it at home. For nearly a decade, we’ve been Bowling Green’s only consistent source of fair-trade, organic, freshly roasted coffee and expertly crafted espresso drinks, and that’s a valuable thing. Because even though coffee’s a luxury, it’s an affordable one — a performance-enhancing, conversation-starting, taste-pleasing luxury in a class by itself.

We’re not perfect; we probably never will be. But we’re aiming for the stars, and making things better one step at a time. In 2011, that means more staff (for better service), an increased focus on the environment (compostable to-go containers, for one, and renovations that utilize sustainable materials, such as the bamboo counters we’ll be installing next week), more education on coffee and the people who grow it… and we’ve got a few other tricks up our sleeve too, but we’ll save those for another time.

So, thanks for making us who we are. It’s been a blast so far, and we can’t wait to see what the next decade brings.

Peace,

Justin (for Spencer’s)

Tuesday’s business section of the Bowling Green Daily News featured an article of buying local in town. The article was a great promotion of our project, the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Redevelopment Authority.

Nick McIvor, a technician at S&R Tire Center, carries four new tires Thursday to be installed on a vehicle at the business.

Try It Local by the Chamber and Get Dit are great sites and we hope you check it out. Robyn wrote a great piece (the only thing I will correct, is we won’t do a newsletter but, a magazine format buy local guide) and I hope you get a chance to read.

New Skinny Sandwich you can now get at JFKaye’s Cafe!

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Very few dining establishments allow for you to play Wii  on your lunch break. Not to mention on a big screen. Then again, not many places can boast being connected to a business known for making parties better. JFKaye’s Cafe & Catering, located in the back of Party One Superstore off of Scottsville Road, does just that and has great food to boot.

Although Felicia, the owner, has done catering for 3 years and some were political events the name is not political. In fact, it came from two sisters in-law Julia Kaye and Felicia Kaye’s dream of opening a restaurant and catering service together. “We both have the middle name Kaye and most do not spell it this way, so we thought that would be a great idea for a name,” says Felicia. “Julia died a few years ago in a car accident and so, when I had the chance to open this I decided to carry out the dream and named it JFKaye’s.”

Tucked away off of Scottsville road behind Party One Superstore the restaurant sits with ample parking. The smell as you hit the door is wonderful. It’s one of those places you know they are putting the effort into the food. They have great sandwiches from the BBQ sandwich served on a corncake to BBQ Pork Chop Sandwich or a basic PBJ for the ‘no frills, like mom used to do’ cravings you might have.

They also serve Flame Broiled on the Grill Burgers as well as Chicken wings and chicken strips. Really the whole menu is great and they have a reasonable kids menu as well. This really is a place for the worker on the go or the parent who wants to take their kid out to eat and let the kid be a kid.

Stop by and check out the new Inflatable playground in Party One Superstore and grab a bite to eat. Maybe play a little Wii on the big screen. They do have Free Wi-fi and WKU Students do receive a 10% discount with student ID. If you need to be in and out quick, they do take call ahead ordering at 270-842-2224.

Vacation with Bowling Green’s Local Radio Station Beaver 96.7!

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 8:00 AM CST

With the snow falling all around us, now is the time to be thinking about Mexican beaches in October. Why not? 96.7 The Beaver and ‘The Travel Authority’ are two local groups teaming up for a great trip to the beaches of Mexico. Hey, if you want to vacation away, not do it with a local company? Aboard one of Carnival’s best ships, The Valor, you will sail for your 7 day cruise (with four ports of call) from the Port of Miami to the Grand Cayman Islands.

You’ve got to see this water in person, to believe it.

In the Grand Cayman Islands you have an opportunity to swim around the coral reefs with Sea Turtles, Stingrays and other fish of the sea or take a 4×4 Jeep Adventure to satisfy your need for sun and fun. Also the Grand Cayman Islands has great shopping for the bargain hunter!

Carnival Cruisers enjoying Isla Rotan’s less natural spots!

After you leave the Grand Cayman Islands you set sail Isla Roatan. An Island off the coast of Honduras, you can enjoy some time on a zipline zipping through the jungle, fish for things not found in Barren River or just enjoy a nice cold drink and the warm sun from your beach side lounge chair.

After Isla Roatan it’s off to Belize. A place where English is the national language and is the Northernmost Central American country is covered mainly by forest. Over 60% of the country boasts a natural beauty of being covered by forest. Known for its great fishing and natural beauty there are so many options. You can take a Boat ride and play in a lagoon, check out the ruins or fish? Or again, relax on the beach with a cold drink.

The last port of call on this seven day cruise is Cozumel. Editorial Note, it’s my favorite of the ports of call for one reason, Xcaret. Others will love the shopping, shopping and more shopping available in Cozumel. If you have a love of history and don’t mind the long ride, the ruins are very popular in this port.

No matter how you slice it, this is a great trip. If you are interested, check out this link.

Destiny Dental, Helping the Bowling Green Area’s Kids Smile on “Give Kids A Smile Day!”

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Friday, January 7th, 2011 8:00 AM CST

Each year on the first Friday in February, thousands of the nation’s dentists and their dental team members provide free oral health care services to children from low-income families across the country. Destiny Dental has been an active participant from the very beginning of this program which is designed to deliver full dental care to children who ‘fall through the cracks”.

“Dr. Robertson seeing a patient during Give Kids a Smile.”

In six years, through this activity, Destiny Dental has been able to provide preventive and restorative dental care to 100+ children, totaling over $35,000.00 in donated dental services. “I enjoy participating in Give Kids A Smile Day because it makes me feel good to provide needed dental care to underserved children in our area.  The smiles and hugs you receive from the children make you feel very fortunate to be able to use your professional abilities to enhance their lives” says Dr. Gina Davis. Not only does this treatment help kids looking great with a fresh smile, it also helps them keep in school. “The reason most kids miss school is because of tooth decay, it’s largely ignored and it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact it’s the #1 reason kids miss school,” says Dr. Steve Robertson.

The last two years Destiny Dental has helped on average 24 children per year. This is up from previous years. “I enjoy participating in Give Kids A Smile Day because it makes me feel good to provide needed dental care to underserved children in our area.  The smiles and hugs you receive from the children make you feel very fortunate to be able to use your professional abilities to enhance their lives” says Dianna Embry Destiny’s Office Manager and Hygienist.

“Toynika Baily and Letisha Davidson show off their smiles with some of the kids.”

Destiny Dental will be participating in this program again this year. If you need any additional information about the program please contact their office at 270-842-3554.

There is nothing better but to see your colleagues recognize when you are giving the extra effort and are leading your industry. The WKU Store was mentioned as a great example by the National Association of College Stores:

“I want my store to be a destination point,” Sears said in August. “I want to get away from the industry look of battleship gray. I want people to see something that’s individualized. I want this place to be like that good hamburger joint: a place where you don’t know what’s different about it, but it’s the place where you have to go.”

Capitol Window and Doors, The Truth about $189 Windows!

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 10:00 AM CST

Many of the big window companies will tell you about the $189 window. Sounds like a great deal but, your Bowling Green window company, Capitol Window & Door wants to set the record straight and not mislead you. “Most of our customers, and the customers of our competitors, choose to spend more than $189 a window” says Capitol Window’s Alan Cannon. “We too can sell you an installed white replacement for $189. This price is just a starting point with the basic installation.”

Replacing windows is an investment in your home, probably your most expensive asset. It is not wise to simply purchase from the company that has the lowest initial price. Not to mention, you only want to make this purchase one time and get it done the right way, the first time. At Capitol, they offer the best value for money at a competitive price against the chains and big box stores in Bowling Green. Not to mention they are locally owned business that has been operating in Bowling Green for 55 years.

“We are very proud of the quality of our products and installation. The installation of your new windows is probably more important than which window product you choose,” says Cannon. Capitol’s installation is ‘beyond compare’ and they back it up with a ten year workmanship warranty.

Check out their products online at www.CapitolWindowandDoor.com or at their showroom at 202 State Street. You can also call them at 270-842-9421.

Cigar and Pipe smoking is not just a “guy” thing and it’s been obvious at various events over the past couple years at Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar. In fact they want to encourage ladies who love to smoke cigars and/or pipes that they are not alone. In 2011, starting January 10th there will be a Monday meeting of “Ladies of the Leaf.”

At these meetings the ladies will enjoy Bowling Green’s premiere cigar shop and bar. They will enjoy meeting other women in the area who enjoy fine tobacco, cigars and pipe smoking. The goal is to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie in the cigar and pipe community.

Along with the Monday meetings, once a month a rep from one of the cigar companies will come in to discuss product as well as have samplings and specials on cigar lines. These specials and sampling times will happen from 5pm-7pm on those select Mondays. From 7pm-9pm on those days there will be a seminar where the rep will discuss the finer points of construction, blending, evaluation, accessories and pairing.

Most likely there will also be beer specials and tastings from the local beer representatives as well. Just another great way for the folks at Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar to show their appreciation to their customers.

“From gold to red and silver to orange, there’s a color — and a flavor — for everyone.”
Spencer’s Coffeehouse, on the square in Bowling Green, is running great deals on Bodum brand French presses and other coffee equipment through Dec. 23. Not only will you get a half-pound of Spencer’s coffee with each French press purchase, you’ll also get a 15 percent discount. Though French presses can be found elsewhere in Bowling Green, most of the models sold at Spencer’s aren’t otherwise available in the region. Among the options is the simple “Brazil” model (in black or red) for $25 (pre-discount); the modern “Bean” with a locking lid and bold orange look for $30; and the classy “Chambord” model, featuring 24-karat gold and a locking lid for $60.
Spencer’s also sells syphon brewers (vacpots) and burr grinders, and any of their fresh, fair-trade, organic coffees can be purchased for brewing at home. Side note: Awesome coffee. Try the Tiramisu.
“From left: Chambord, Bean and Brazil presses, all 15% off at Spencer’s through Dec. 23.”
“Spencer’s barista Katie shows off the bold “Bean” French press, filled with a fresh helping of Moka Java coffee.”

George Burns once said, “I’m at the age now where just putting my cigar in its holder is a thrill.” Well, last Thursday night at Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar was a great thrill  for all to relax with (about 60 is what I would guess) others smoking cigars and enjoying great beer from Founders Brewery.
Ian from Oliva showed us pictures of the new Corvette that Oliva just bought for a national contest they will be conducting this year:
We really did have a good night and many nights are just like this at Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar. Enjoy some photos from the event:
“The Cigar Tower”
“Ladies enjoy a good smoke as well.”
“Adam Boca enjoying his smoke.”
“Cheers!”
“There was more gabbing than pool playing.”

Are you helping Bowling Green with your Christmas shopping?

As the Holiday shopping comes to a fevered pitch with 12 days left, shopping for gifts will be on everyone’s mind, but have you ever stopped to think about the importance of WHERE you are buying your gifts and what significance that decision has on your town? This year, we ask all of you to give Bowling Green the gift of a strong economy by shopping at locally-owned, independent businesses. Studies have shown that for every $100 spent at a chain, only $15 remains in the local community, but spending $100 at a Bowling Green business keeps $45 in the local community.

Another reason to shop locally is to ensure the survival of businesses that make Bowling Green the charming city we all love. Not just those great little boutiques and restaurants Downtown or off Campbell Lane, but also the lawyers, Barbers and Stylists, Home improvement stores and convenience stores. These are the businesses owned by your neighbors and friends, who will stand by our city in the good and the bad as well as donate to our youth football, soccer, baseball and other leagues as well as our schools.

This holiday season, when shopping we challenge you to at least 10% more of your money with local businesses. It could be for a gift or just where you fill your tanks of gas or feel your cravings at a local restaurant.

Remember, you are shopping at a Bowling Green store  you invest in making Bowling Green better. So please, Buy Local this holiday season.

As they say, tomorrow should be ‘An Evening of Pure Awl-Some.’

Tomorrow, Thursday December 9th, starting at 5pm, Bowling Green Pipe & Cigar will be hosting their 2nd Annual Oliva Holiday Blow-Out at 434 East Main. Ian Hummel of Oliva Cigars will be on hand to usher in the season with great discounts and specials on Oliva, Cain, and Nub Cigars, The Best Cigars for Under $10. Having been in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 for the last 5 years in a row, I find it hard to argue with that assertion.

Founders brewery will be the featured brewery that evening with specials on their highly acclaimed Breakfast Stout, Reds Rye Pale Ale, and Porter to name a few. With great cigars, tasty beverages, and a room full of friends to tell lies with, this Thursday night is the perfect way to prepare for a long winter.

Also, don’t forget that it’s also Indianapolis Colts playing the Tennessee Titans for the Thursday night game. It just so happens they have a TV. This will be their last big event at BG Pipe and Tobacco until early spring. Between the Free Cigars, Beer Specials, Colts/Titans Football, the great service of Andrew and Chris will make this a great way to kick off the holidays and maybe knock off some holiday shopping with beer, cigars and football! Ladies, are encouraged to show up and help add some class to the place.

Event starts at 5:00pm and the game is at 7:30pm.

PAYware Mobile secure card payment system for iPhone is now available through CPS Kentucky. The solution transforms the iPhone into a mobile payment device with a card encryption sleeve that allows merchants to capture data via card swipe, a more secure, cost effective method than manually entering data.

The PAYware Mobile app is PCI compliant, and the card encryption sleeve is compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. It will be available (according to Verifone) as early as January 1st, 2011. The current PAYware system also has a sign feature:

CPS Kentucky works closely with Global Payments who are the first to come to market with this new feature for iPhones. “VeriFone has created a market-leading mobile payment solution that will expand electronic card acceptance to a broad range of merchants and small businesses for which a payment-enabled, multipurpose smartphone is the best option for electronic payment transactions,” said Jeff J. McGuire, Vice President, Product Development and Marketing for Global Payments. “We’re delighted to be first to introduce this first-class payment solution for iPhone.”

Don’t forget to “Give a Gift From Bowling Green” this holiday season.

By Admin, BuyLocalBG.com, BuyLocalBg@gmail.com/
Wednesday, November 30th, 2010 10:30 PM CST

Governor Beshear has launched the “Give a Gift from Kentucky” campaign. Well, we hope you get even more local with a gift from Bowling Green. A few suggestions, in no particular order.

1. A Gift from the WKU Store. The Hilltopper fan in your life always could use a new jacket, shirt or anything showing their love for ‘Big Red.’

2. Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar. A locker membership is the gift that keeps on giving for the Cigar Connoisseur in your life. A locker Membership gives them a new sample of top shelf cigars each month. As someone who’s taken advantage of this gift, it’s fantastic. Or if you have a loved one overseas, submit their name to the guys at the shop or buy some “Smokes for Soldiers” this holiday season.

3. Gift Certificate at ‘The Bistro’, Spencer’s or ‘Cambridge Market.’ Who doesn’t love a good meal or a great cup of coffee?

4. A nice pair of earrings for the ladies or a nice watch for the man in your life? Morris Jewelry probably has what you are looking for. Hey guys, Jewelry… come on, you know she’ll love you more this year than the year prior with a gift from Morris.

5. Candle Makers on The Square always has a great smell when you open the door. How about delivering that great smell to your favorite aunt this holiday?

6. Donate for a cause! No matter if it’s to help support the arts (Capital Arts Alliance) or special needs kids (New Beginnings Therapeutic Riding) the gift of giving is always a good idea. It’s these groups who get hit first in our slower times.

There are so many more ideas and we will get a bigger list once we officially launch the site but, I wanted to let some of our earliest supporters and fans some of the places we are buying gifts this holiday season. Remember, buying local always helps our community more and many of our local shops have great stuff for this holiday season. Have fun and be safe shopping.

Monday, November 29, 2010 6:30 AM CST

Bowling Green, Ky. — December holds a bit of tradition for BG Pipe and Cigar. It was their first full month of business in 2008 and that is why they’d like to celebrate it with you during their Second Annual Oliva Christmas Blowout.

A free Oliva cigar will be given to the first twenty-five people in attendance byIan Hummel, the regional Oliva representative.

Don’t these look Tasty!

Buy 3 Oliva, Nub and/or Cain cigars and receive a free cigar. Snag a Box at 15% off and get a free Oliva 6pk sampler. There will be a special upgrade for the purchase of a box of Serie V while supplies last. If that is not a sweet enough deal they’ll be doing specials on all Founders Brewery Beers. That’s right, Breakfast Stout, Red’s Rye, Founders Porter, and an as yet to be named beer will all be discounted during the event.

A final note for football fans. Keep in mind that Indianapolis visits Tennessee for the Thursday night game. It just so happens they have a TV. Is this divine providence? Could it be that mere mortals were able to predict a perfect alignment of Cigars, Beer, and Football? Not just football, but a local divisional rivalry. In a word, yes. They are scheduling geniuses and called in a favor to the NFL scheduling committee. Don’t question it. That just happened.

By Site Admin, Buy Local Bowling Green, Ky.- The mission of BuyLocalBG.com is to preserve the unique community character of the SOKY  area by promoting locally-owned businesses and to educate citizens on the value of shopping locally. In order to pursue its mission, BLBG will focus on three primary initiatives:

1. Educate & Inform citizens in an entertaining way of the value provided by locally owned businesses, including their importance to the local economy, culture, and social fabric. The goal is to encourage area residents to view themselves as citizens — as members of a community rather than merely as consumers. Bowling Green is has a diverse population with new people moving in every day, they are more familiar with the chains but, our goal is to get them familiar with our local businesses.

2. Offering group branding, promotion and advertising to BLBG members to elevate the individual and collective profiles of locally owned businesses in order to provide marketing and exposure advantages that only box stores and chains routinely enjoy.

3. Creating strong relationships with local government and media in order to inform local decision-making and give voice to the locally owned independent business community, and to promote policies that support community-rooted enterprise.

Top Ten reasons to Think Local – Buy Local – Be Local

  1. Buy Local — Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms — continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.(Click here to see summaries of a variety of economic impact studies; these include case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base.)
  2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.
  3. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun — all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit.  “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust
  4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
  5. Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.
  6. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.
  7. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.
  8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.
  9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.  A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.
  10. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
