We’ve been to most of North America and each region has unique tastes that they have perfected. New England is one of those regions. Much like the South, Southwest and the Midwest the area has also been touched by immigration. That’s why the taste of Italy is still strong in the region and for our money, the best Italian we’ve ever tasted (we’ve never been to Italy though). Here are our five must-eats of New England:
1. Lobster Roll in Maine- The quintessential New England treat is the lobster roll. The best lobster roll in the World is the Maine lobster roll we had from The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Maine. The lobster is as fresh as you can get (they are pulling them off the back deck from the ocean), then steamed in ocean water. The meat is picked by hand. Itโs served on a fresh round white roll that is baked daily 11 miles away at Reilly’s bakery in Biddeford, Maine. It’s served with an option of mayo, melted butter or if you want both! Itโs no wonder why they sell as many as 500 of these per day!ย Located at 2 Western Ave, Kennebunk, ME 04043. Find their menu and more at their website.

2. Cannolis in Boston-ย Italians in North Boston have left their mark on the city. Some great Pizza (Sadly, Galleria Umberto was closed for July when we were there) and pasta can be found in the Northern part of Beantown. One place stood out to us though, Mikeโs Pastry. I didnโt even know I loved Cannoliโs so much until I bit into one of these. Fresh cannoli shells filled with ricotta cheese. But it doesnโt stop there. They also provide the flavors of Italy: Limoncello, Amaretto, hazelnut, and pistachio. BUT WAIT, there’s more. Oreo, mint chip, chocolate dipped, pecan caramel and the list goes on. Cases upon cases of fresh cannoli, just waiting to be boxed up and enjoyed. We visited the 300 Hanover St, Boston, MA 02113 location. Find out more and their other location by visiting their website.ย

3. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven- This is one of the best and oldest pizzerias in the United States. (See our Pizza post from a bit back where we put them only behind Detroit’s Buddy’s Pizza) They have been doing it the same way since 1925โbaked in a coal-fired brick pizza oven. They are most known for their white clam pieโcrust, olive oil, oregano, grated cheese, chopped garlic, and fresh littleneck clams. This is not our cup of tea due to our not liking clams that much. It was delicious (for clams), we preferred the tomato pieโtomatoes, grated pecorino Romano cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil. YUMMMM!!!!!ย Plus, we had a bacon and cheese that would knock your socks off. The location we went to was located at 157 Wooster St, New Haven, CT 06511. Find their menu and other locations on their website.

4. Seafood in Salem- The Clam Shack in Salem was a very lucky find for us. We just happened upon this delicious seafood shack by chance as we were driving around Salem after learning about witches. Well, this seafood was enchanting. It quickly became one of our favorites of the trip. Fresh seafood, perfect views of the bay and the best clam chowder Iโve ever tasted!ย They are located at 98 Restaurant Row, Salem, MA 01970.

5. Italian food on Cape Cod- Finding Montanoโs Restaurant in North Truro, Massachusetts out on the Cape was a total accident. The perfect ending to a scenic day and driving around Cape Cod. This is what you would assume the best Italian cuisine would taste like! Why? Because it is! This place boasts made from scratch, fresh pasta, and pizza dough. Itโs easy to see why itโs a local favorite.ย They are located at 481 US-6, North Truro, MA 02652. Find out more on their website.

Youโve negotiated a good deal on your new dream home.
Itโs in the perfect neighborhood, and in great shape. Even better, those monthly mortgage payments wonโt stop you from going out to nice dinner once in a while or even heading off on vacation.
But hold on. Did you factor in the cost of homeowners insurance? The cost of homeowners insurance typically doesnโt have a big enough impact that you end up stuck inside your new home without living it up outside of it. Still, it is extremely important to factor in insurance costs to figure out whatโs right for your situationโand your budget.
Of course, lenders almost always require homeowners insurance before signing off on the loan. And even if youโre fortunate enough to not need a loan, youโll need good insurance to protect your investment.
So you know you need it, but how much are you going to pay for it? According to Realtor.com, the average annual premium costs about $952.
But depending on your situation you could pay more or less than average. Just how much relies on several factors that we will explore โ including your deductible, the value of your home and belongings, your history of claims, and other variables such as the cost and age of your home.
SELECTING THE RIGHT DEDUCTIBLE FOR YOU
Your deductible is one key factor in how much you will pay. If you select a policy with a high deductible, the annual cost for your insurance policy should be lower. Of course, when you go to make a claim, you will pay more out of pocket to meet that deductible. Conversely, if you pick a lower deductible, the cost of your insurance will be higher, but you wonโt suffer sticker shock when it comes time to put in that claim.
Figuring out your household expense (and entertainment) budget is one way to decide on whether to go with a higher or lower deductible. Whatever deductible you choose, itโs a smart idea to have that amount stashed away in your emergency fund so youโre financially prepared in case you need to file a claim.
HOW MUCH COVERAGE IS ENOUGH?
While weโre focusing on the actual cost of homeowners insurance, itโs essential that you get the right amount of coverage. Specifically, you need enough insurance that would allow you to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss. In other words, donโt pinch pennies by choosing a lower limit that will hurt you in the event of a catastrophe.
Ask your agent about replacement cost versus actual cash value. Replacement cost is typically the way to go because you could rebuild after a major loss without concern for depreciation. And for added protection, ask your agent about ERIEโs guaranteed replacement cost.
Is your new home going to be move-in ready, or is it a fixer-upper? If you are planning on doing major upgrades to your home that will boost its value, keep in mind that the cost to insure it will likely rise as well. If and when you do a home improvement project, report that to your insurance company so they can adjust the limit if necessary.
If your โhome improvementโ project is the result of major damage to your home, make sure you have whatโs known as โloss of useโ coverage. That coverage can reimburse you for hotel costs or apartment rental if your home is a total loss, or if it becomes uninhabitable after a covered loss. You would want that reimbursement if youโre forced out of your home while repairs are made.
Lawsuits are pretty common these days, and they can be extremely costly. Thatโs why you should make sure you buy an appropriate amount of coverage. When you buy homeowners liability coverage, youโre investing in peace of mind.
Homeowners liability coverage protects your assets in case someone gets hurt on your property. You might not realize this, but it also provides coverage for some incidents away from the home. You might also want to consider a Personal Catastrophe Liability policy, which adds another $1 million to $5 million in liability coverage to your homeowners as well as your auto coverage.
Itโs a pretty simple formula โ if your home costs more, youโre going to pay more to insure it. Thatโs why you need a good, solid assessment of your homeโs worth. It also helps to estimate the value of your personal possessions through a home inventory.
See also: How to Start Your Home Inventory (Itโs Easier Than You Think!)
Also, you might want to consider an appraisal for high-value belongings and talk to your insurance agent to see if you should consider any supplemental coverages to make sure your valuables are properly covered. Learn more about personal valuables insurance from ERIE.
YOUR HISTORY OF CLAIMS
When it comes to insurance, your past can influence your future. How much you pay for homeowners insurance can be significantly affected by how many claims youโve made previously. It stands to reason that homeowners with fewer claims would pay less, and those with more claims would pay more. Those with more claims are proven to be a higher risk for insurers.
Geography โ as it relates to frequency of natural disasters โ also plays a role in your costs. If your home is near an area that is prone to hurricanes, tornadoes, or forest fires, your homeowners insurance is going to be more expensive. Learn more about how named storms affect your insurance coverage.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR COVERAGE WITH ENDORSEMENTS
Think of endorsements as added options to customize your policy. At ERIE, we have a bunch.* For example:
Available endorsements differ by policy and state, so check with your ERIE agent about which ones are the best fit for you and how much theyโd cost to add on.
WHAT ELSE CAN AFFECT THE PRICE OF MY HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE?
There are several other factors that could influence how much you pay for homeowners insurance.
You could reduce the amount of your premium if you have security features such as a security alarm system, carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke alarms. Check with an insurance professional like your local ERIE agent about potential discounts.
Shopping for insurance solely on price can end up being a costly mistake. You should compare costs of homeowners insurance, while making sure you have a clear understanding of what each insurer is covering. A great deal isnโt so great if you end up shelling out a lot more money in the event of a major claim.
And after youโve done your research and assessed your specific needs, you should be worry-free enough to relax and enjoy your new home knowing youโre covered with the right insurance at the right price.

Would you spend $1000-$1500 on a new mattress if you knew you would be buying a new one in another 5 years? Likely not, and yet unsuspecting consumers do it every single day. John Bandy explains why this happens and how you can save your wallet the pain of purchasing a mattress that will give you that awful body impression.
During the 4th of July week, we decided to visit the folks in the North Eastern part of the United States and get a taste of New England. If you havenโt been to New England yet, itโs time to go! Breathtaking scenery, culture, and obviously history. It’s also blessed with all seasons of the year. New England has some of the best experiences America has to offer. Here are some of our favorite things to do in New England:
1. Funky Rock Art- Driving up from New Hampshire to Portland we stopped in the lovely seaside town of Kennebunkport, Maine. The town has scenic beaches and breakwater rocks that you can stand on for a closer look at boats in the harbor. You can drive along the edge of the water for breathtaking views. We also walked along the banks to view mansions and the summer home of our former president, George H. W. Bush. Around the rocky areas of the coast, we noticed people leaving well-stacked art designs for others to enjoy. We also left a design of our own.

2. Portland Head Lighthouse- I know it’s weird to say this was our highlight of Portland with such great food and beer in the city but it really was the highlight. This is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, as well as the oldest in Maine. Located on over 90 acres of recreational space, we enjoyed walking the cliffside loop exploring the rocky beach. This is the most photographed lighthouse in America so donโt forget your camera! Also a lovely place for watching sailboats go by and enjoy a New England Treasure.

3. Salem Witch Museum- Everyone knows that Salem, Massachusetts is home to one of the worst injustices of the legal system with the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials are brought to life through 13 stage sets at the Salem Witch Museum featuring life-size figures and narration describing the 1692 hysteria. The second part of the tour is a guided walk through the museum that explains the history of witchcraft, modern practices, and stereotypes for a true understanding of witchcraft through the ages. Another fun thing about the city of Salem is exploring the filming locations of several movies, including an all-time favorite โHocus Pocusโ a Disney Movie pictured below in white. One of the original Historical homes of the Salem Witch Trials is a few doors down in black. Also, how cool is the “I Dream of Jeanie” Statue?

4. Visit Ivy League Colleges- These colleges are known for their academic rigor, rich history, and long-standing traditions. We loved visiting Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and MIT to get a taste of their culture and explore their beautiful grounds and architecture. Photo is in front of The Harvard Lampoon Building and the other is Yale from The Study Hotel. Staying in the Study hotel we were overlooking Yale’s old campus. Over 350 years ago this was our ancestor’s homestead. The many times Great Grandfather of our publisher donated his farmland just below for the original campus. On June 4, 1639, a young man named William Tuttle signed the church covenant document that established New Haven Colony.

5. Mansion Row- If you love The Biltmore in Asheville you are going to love Newport, Rhode Island. The mansions of Newport were built as summer homes for wealthy tycoons in the 1850โs to the 1990s and are simply breathtaking. If you love history and historical architecture, tours of these mansions should not be missed.

6. Plymouth Rock & Lexington and Concord- Everyone wants to see Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. We visited New Englandโs most visited rock (which is most likely not the actual rock)! This famous landmark is the spot where the Pilgrims landed in 1620 to found Plymouth, Massachusetts. Gazing upon the rock will connect you with the Pilgrim story in a way that no textbook can! Not to mention the road it sits on is lined with cute shops and drinking/eating establishments facing the harbor. We also add Lexington and Concord to this because we only have room for 10. That said, this is going with the US History buff must visits. Following the trail of Paul Revere and seeing the spot where The Shot Heard Around the World took place was our favorite part. The actual Boston sites were fine but we enjoyed Lexington and Concord more and it seemed to be less crowded so you could enjoy the experience and learn more about the events at these locations.

7. Ice Cream in Vermont- Visit Ben and Jerryโs factory tour in Waterbury, Vermont and enjoy a unique American company. We took a guided factory tour to see what it takes for our favorite flavors to come to fruition. We were able to taste new flavors the staff was working on. You can also mourn the loss of discontinued flavors in their flavor graveyard right next to the factory parking lot. A truly delicious experience! Pro-Tip: Get the Maple Flavored ice cream that is available only at the Waterbury location.

8. The Vermont Country Store- Step back in time when you visit this general store that opened in 1946. The Vermont Country Store takes pride in selling merchandise that is durable and practical as well as food items that are delicious and timeless. We bought our fair share of Vermont maple syrup while visiting. This store also has a mail-order catalog that has a cult following. We have ordered several things, ourselves, since returning home. Itโs just that good!

10. Heartthrob Tour- Get a sidewalk lesson in pop history! New Kids On the Block fans can get a peek of Danny Woodโs childhood home, Jonathan and Jordan Knightโs childhood home, and Donnie Wahlbergโs apartment! You can even go by the NKOTB favorite hangout, Hi-Fi Pizza! And donโt forget to get your picture in front of the recording studio of Aerosmith! Thank you, Boston, for some of my favorite music!

Natural elements such as stone, driftwood, greenery, copper, etc.ย are a big trend that is being incorporated into homes. Itโs a good way to make any home feel comfier and inviting while allowing you to feel more in touch with the earth.ย Simple decor examples toย incorporate natural elements into your home could include houseplants (such as succulents for small spaces, or big green leafy plants for a larger space), natural sunlight (using lighter, brighter colored curtains), andย marble (such as marble countertops, or small marble accent pieces for a bathroom.) Sustainable and handmade pieces are also a big trend to help incorporate natural elements into your home.

Trays are a very functional and flexible piece ofย decor that can really be used in most places in your home. They can be used as a variety of different decor options such as the base to the centerpiece of your dining room table, to filling empty spots and even to transform a stool in your living room into a side table for guests to use for their drinks, etc. You can find trays in an abundance of sizes and shapes to give your space a unique touch.

Simple kitchens have been the in trend for quite some time, and now we are welcoming a new trend of adding a pop to your kitchen. Boldly patterned backsplashes are a new and upcoming trend that will add more character to your kitchen.

Shop at Home Carpets has always been the easiest way to buy flooring in Southern Kentucky. Not only do you see the samples in person you can compare and contrast with your paint and other surroundings in your home. Not to mention the savings passed on to you without a big show room to try and sale you something youโve not seen in your home.

At Shop At Home Carpets they have no big, high-dollar retial showroom to pay for on expensive real estate. They donโt have a huge corporation to support. They just have a warehouse full of top quality products from vendors like Beaulieu, Mohawk, Bruce, Shaw, Anderson and more. And they pass the savings on to you allowing them to give the best prices around.

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that moves your teeth into place quickly and effectively.
Dr. Lawless creates a treatment plan using software, which is based on a 3D digital scan of your mouth. Based on this treatment plan, the aligners are generated. Each aligner will move your teeth a little further into place, up until the final placement is achieved. The aligners perfectly fit your teeth, which allows them to be truly invisible. Even those who are closest to you will have no idea you are wearing them.
While the invisibility of Invisalign is often what draws people in, we think the best part of the system is the minimal impact it has on your day to day life. Eating is easy because you can remove your aligners, so you do not need to change your diet. Brushing and flossing are also simple due to the ability to remove the aligners. Since you swap out the aligners on your own, you only need to see us every six to eight weeks, making Invisalign great for your schedule.
Invisalign aligners are made from smooth medical-grade plastic. This means there are no sharp edges to cause discomfort. When you combine this with the emotional comfort you feel when you have discreet and convenient treatment, it comes together to make one of the best forms of orthodontic treatment on the market.
Are you convinced that Invisalign is a great option for you? Then it is time to find out if your alignment problems can be treated with the system. Give us a call to schedule your consultation today.
Every new smile starts with a complimentary smile assessment in one of our three convenient practice locations. Simply give us a call and speak with one of our friendly team members, like Kelsi, pictured above, and let them know you would like to schedule an Invisalign consultation or schedule online!

Everyone has their spot to “Must Eat” when in New Orleans. There is a good reason you will not go hungry in New Orleans! There are so many delectable bites in this city, that it would be impossible to review them all. So, weโve narrowed down our favorites: ย
When you want a true taste of New Orleans fine dining, go to Commander’s Palace in the Garden District. We’ve been to other big names but this one is the place to save that nice ensemble you brought to wear out. You will be met with Southern Hospitality, white linen table cloths, and perfectly sweetened tea. We visited during the Jazz Brunch and it was an amazing and memorable experience. We were served a three-course meal while listening to a jazz band. They stop at each table for special requests and were impressed when our young daughter requested โDo Whatcha Wannaโ by Rebirth Brass Band. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. The creole bread pudding soufflรฉ is not to be missed.ย Located 1403 Washington Avenue. www.commanderspalace.com

Theyโve been doing Po-boys right since 1924! This small house-like corner shop draws in locals and visitors alike. The Po-boys are huge and fresh and are created by the long-time staff. Our pick is the shrimp Po-boy fully dressed (gravy and cheese), washed down with a Barq’s root beer and a bag of Zappโs Voodoo chips. This is truly a neighborhood gem with the best Po-boys Iโve ever tasted.ย Grab a number and a seat at the bar. Located at 5240 Annunciation Street. www.domilisespoboys.com

Fresh Beignets with a tower of powdered sugar, washed down with the cafe ole (frozen is best). The worldโs most famous coffee (really beignet) shop should not be missed when youโre in New Orleans. As cliche, as it is nothing, beats Cafe Du Monde. They have been around since 1862 and you can eat in or take a bag of goodness to go. We have to stop here every time we are in New Orleansโฆno exception.ย Located at 800 Decatur Street. www.cafedumonde.com/

The South meets Israel. This James Beard Award-winning restaurant under Alon Shaya married these two cultures beautifully. Unfortunately, Alon & John Besh are not working together in this restaurant but the food is still top-notch. We went for lunch and ordered several small plates to share. Some stand out dishes were the Matbucha, Fried Chicken Hummus and the fresh Pita Bread that just kept coming!ย Located at 4213 Magazine Street. www.shayarestaurant.com/

You just cannot beat a French Cafe styled breakfast spotโฆeven if itโs in the middle of New Orleans. This bakery and cafe are known for their handcrafted pastries and bread, and sandwiches made from locally sourced products. Itโs the perfect stop for a mid-morning snack.ย Located at 4600 Magazine Street. laboulangerienola.com

This diner-style restaurant is a landmark in the city. It opened in 1946 and when you walk through the door, you feel like youโre stepping back in time. A popular spot for Tulane and Loyola students. The servers wear bow ties and the seating is at the counter. They are known for their bacon cheeseburgers, omelets, chocolate pecan pie, and chocolate freezes. They live up to the hype. How do we know? We tried them all! Pelicans fans we always pull for y’all except when our hometown team is in the building. Located atย 626 South Carrollton Avenue (Jump on the trolley for an easy ride there).

Having a Snoball is a tradition for locals in those warm months in New Orleans. Plum Street has a machine that makes ice โlike you have snow falling from the skyโ. That perfect consistency along with fruit-flavored syrups and sweetened condensed milk makes the perfect sweet treat. Oh, and theyโve been doing it since 1945! Located at 1300 Burdette Street. www.plumstreetsnoball.comย

You have to take a scenic drive about an hour and a half south to get to this restaurant but itโs well worth the gas! This place is overlooking the busy marina in Venice, Louisiana. Home to professional and sport fisherman. You canโt get fresher seafood than that. The boudin egg rolls were delicious as well as their shrimp and onion rings. After your meal, you can visit the pelicans fighting for fish heads and skin and the neighborhood cat who looks like Goose from “Captain Marvel.” If youโre looking for fresh, quality seafood, Crawgators is highly recommended. If youโve been out fishing all day, they will even prepare your catch!ย Put 237 Sports Marina Rd, Venice, LA 70091 into your GPS. You’ll need it. www.venicemarina.com/restaurant.html

Around the corner from where we were staying sits a fine dining level Lebanese place that takes some cues from its home city. The odd part, it’s not where you are expecting it to be located. Looking for some fantastic Middle Eastern Classics and Po’Boys? Just pop inside of the Jetโs gas station on Magazine Street and youโll find it! They serve fresh chicken shawarma, falafel, lamb and beef gyros, hummus, Lebanese Tea with Pine nuts and locally made pita. Shrimp po-boys also make an appearance. Gas station food, elevated!ย Located at 3720 Magazine Street. www.shawarmaonthego.com/

We didnโt make it here for their James Beard Foundation recognized King Cakes (we got to enjoy the Easter season offerings). However, they serve the best banh mi around. This Vietnamese sandwich is loaded with sliced pork, cilantro, and sliced cucumber on freshly baked bread. This โVietnamese Po-Boyโ does not disappoint!ย Plus, grab the baked desserts while you are there. Located a little outside of the city at 14207 Chef Menteur Highway. dpbakeshop.com

Are CBD and hemp oil the same thing? No. Hemp oil is an extract from seeds and contains no CBD.
It is sometimes called cannabis sativa seed oil, which can be confusing. While hemp seed oil has antioxidants that can be good for the skin, CBD is the substance sought for anti-inflammatory and other beneficial benefits. CBD is found in the flower of the plant, not the seed. Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a definite difference.
You don’t want to pay for something you aren’t getting so be sure to read the label and buy from a reputable source.ย
There isnโt a day that goes by we donโt get asked if weโd like CBD oil. Itโs probably the most popular new item in many stores. We even have seen it sold in a diner in Nashville. It was right next to the toothpicks and bubble gum. That said, itโs still medicine for your body and you need to be careful if you are currently on other prescriptions. CDS #10 Pharmacy has a great way to increase the effectiveness of your CBD Oil.
Bring CDS #10 Pharmacy your current medication list. That way you can reduce the possible negative interactions with CBD.
When choosing CBD Oil select a high quality product from a reputable company. This is an oil that is to be consumed to help your health. Make sure you are dealing with people who live to a higher standard. Buying it from a random business with no background for health can be risky. Take care of yourself and protect yourself from people profiting off a booming business.
Find your optimal dose. People are different. The dose that works for your friend may work differently for you.
CDS #10 now carries a line You are going to want to try. We talk to pharmacist Darren Lacefield of CDS #10 Pharmacy about the many benefits of their Full Spectrum Hemp Oil products that can now be purchased in store. They are 100% Legal, Compliant & the 1st Approved under the 2014 Farm Bill. Click the above video for more!

There’s a reason whyย hot yogaย is so popular, the benefits ofย hot yogaย are endless.ย Finding a class this week should be on your to-do list. Head to Hot Yoga Bowling Green this week:
ย Rolling down I-65 heading toward The Crescent Cityย is often nerve-racking as a parent. Someone we spoke with only scheduled two days in New Orleans afraid there wasn’t much for the family. Oh, we got all the parents covered here. There are so many fun things to do in New Orleans! Known for a more adult atmosphere, New Orleans can also be a great place for a family trip. We took our young daughter with us to explore this southern city and here is a list of our favorite activities:ย
1. Studio Be- Artist Brandan “B-mike” Odums has become a legend of using the abandoned building to make a powerful message all over the city. From abandoned public housing buildings to other buildings left to rot after Katrina. He now has created a powerful experience in a warehouse that houses a fantastic art exhibition in the Bywater section of New Orleans! HIis exhibit includes pieces that speak to Hurricane Katrina, Black Lives Matter’s Modern day movement and the past Civil Rights Movement. It also touches on self-esteem and love. For a truly extraordinary experience, visit Studio Be.ย 2941 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70117. Great video below from GoNOLA
2. Trolley and graveyards- In New Orleans, trolleys are called streetcars. This is a charming, romantic and convenient way to see the mansions that line the streets. If you have a little one who loves “Princess and the Frog” they are going to love riding down the tracks through the Garden District. Also, visiting graveyards is a must to get that full New Orleans tourist experience. Each graveyard has a story to tell and so many offer tours. New Orleans bury their dead in above ground cemeteries and mausoleums. The tombs and monuments are fascinating and worth your time to visit.ย The one we visited was Lafayette Cemetery Number 1. It’s located across from the famous Commander’s Palace.

3. Prytania Theater- This historic, 1915 single screen movie theater shows New Release, classic, kidsโ and indie flicks. It is the oldest operating theater in New Orleans and caters to film buffs and families alike. It certainly has that old Hollywood feel. We were beyond excited to introduce Raiders of the Lost Arc to our young childโฆon the big screen!ย It is also charming that the theater is only a single screen theater. Perfect spot when the heat and humidity just get a little too much for you.
4. Mardi Gras World- You will be engulfed in a 300,000 square foot working warehouse when you enter Mardi Gras World. Youโll see old and new floats being made for Mardi Gras parades year-round. They also give you a slice of King Cake to complete the experience. We enjoyed our time here and were amazed by the artistry and effort it takes to make these parade floats.ย
5. Whitney Plantation- Experience a guided walking tour of this plantation museum that focuses on the experience of southern slaves. Through slave narratives, museum exhibits, memorial artwork and restored buildings, the Whitney will give you an understanding about the enslaved people who lived and worked there. This tour will open your heart and your mind.ย
6. French Quarter Kids- Our daughter loved these tours. The Creole kids tour is a 1.5-hour tour for kids ages 7-12. The guide takes you back to the 1830s where you explore what life was like for kids back then. This family-friendly tour will keep your kids entertained while they learn. We learned new things too! We also experienced the Music Tour for Teens. What a great way to explore the musical roots and history of this city! This tour spends a great amount of time in Congo Square. These retired teachers made excellent tour guides and the kids (and the parents) were engaged the whole time.ย

7. Sports- Catch a Pelicans or a Saints game. Experience the excitement of professional sports and cheer on your favorite team!ย If it’s fall, you’re only an hour from LSU and Tiger Stadium. We’ve spent more time in New Orleans during the NBA season. It’s always a great chance to see the stars of the Western Conference when in town.
8. Preservation Hall- Experience the living traditions of Jazz at Preservation Hall. The Hall, founded in 1961, hosts intimate, acoustic jazz concerts nightly. They feature some of New Orleanโs finest performers and thereโs no better place to experience a live concert.ย We got lucky to see Wendell Brunious and Shannon Powell (drummer in the photo with our daughter). Mr. Powell is Harry Connickโs drummer in many of the big band albums and also performed with John Bouttรฉ on the Treme song for HBOโs series. There were three other fabulous musicians with equal resumes. Warning, this is a really old school venue with limited air. (Louis Ford Clarinet, Steve Pistorious piano, Freddie Lonzo trombone)

9. Congo Square-ย Visit this open space full of musical history. Historically, this was a place that enslaved Africans would set up a market, sing, dance and play music. Congo Square continues to be an important venue for music festivals, brass band parades, and drum circles.ย
10. Peaches Record Store– Peaches records opened in 1975 and is a favorite local music hub in the city. It is a family-run business and has helped launch the careers of many Nola musicians. But waitโฆ.thereโs more! There is an authentic 1940โs Woolworthโs luncheonette counter that is fully intactโฆin the record store! Itโs the owner’s dream to make it fully operational again. But for now, itโs worth going to see this piece of history hiding in a record store.ย

There is no question that there is an ever-increasing awareness and interest in nutritional supplementation to help maintain health. Millions of Americans are taking nutritional supplements every day and experiencing better overall health for their efforts. However, there is also no question thatย ALL SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.ย This fact can be very confusing to the public who, naturally, want to seek out the best supplements available to obtain optimal outcomes. At CDS #10 pharmacy, they feature โprofessional-gradeโ quality supplements. But what does that mean to you?
In CDS #10 pharmacy, โprofessional-gradeโ means that the quality and purity of our supplements are beyond question and are tested many times during the production process. Physicians, pharmacists, chiropractors and other healthcare professionals do not have the time to waste on products of questionable quality when they make recommendations for nutritional supplements. That is why they, and so many other healthcare professionals, recommend the professional-grade products found in CDS #10’s supplement line.
So, what does professional-quality mean to you? (From CDS #10)

When my husband and I decided to buy our home, there were many features we fell in love with: The brick fireplaceโฆthe wooded yardโฆthe built-ins.
But the one thing we couldnโt get past was the bathroom countertops. Straight out of a 1982 home design magazine, the bathroom included countertops with 4-inch tiled squares. So far so good, right?
Did I mention the tiles were pink framed with brown wicker baskets festively filled with spring flowers?
If that wasnโt bad enough, in what I can only guess was an attempt to naturalize the flowers, at one point one of the prior owners spray painted the counters white. Yes, you read that correctly: spray painted. The result was half white, half brown baskets of spring flowers adorning the bathroom counters.
It was not a hard decision that our bathroom was the first home improvement project we were tackling. For countertop materials there are a variety of options, but I knew immediately I wanted granite.
I always liked natural stone. I enjoy that no two countertops are alike. Those flecks of varying colors infused into the stone are just one of the things that drew me to granite โ or, as I say, โEvery ubatuba is different!โ (Inside granite joke.)
I was told (and it was great advice) to go to the store and hand-pick my slab. Since colors vary, it is important to look at more than a sample piece. I had an idea of the color I wanted for my bathroom, but once I saw actual slabs in the sunlight, the amount of color variations was amazing. And paint colors in your kitchen or bath can pull out certain color veining thatโs embedded in the stone.
Aside from aesthetics there are several practical reasons to choose granite. Granite doesnโt melt or blister when exposed to heat. But even though pots in the kitchen and curling irons in the bathrooms can be placed on the granite, I was told that due to the sealers, it is recommended to still use a trivet, hot plate, or towel before placing a hot item on a counter.
Granite scores a seven on the Mohs 10-point scale for hardness. Comparatively, a diamond is a 10, so granite is very difficult to scratch.
Granite is more expensive than other countertop options. The Natural Stone Institute reports that the average price for a typical granite kitchen countertop is $3,000 to $4,000. Price is impacted by color, thickness of the slab, size of countertop, and shape, which takes into account cabinet bump outs, islands, and corners. You can also pick the type of edge you want, called the bullnose. Different styles cost more.
If you like how granite looks, but not what it costs, donโt rule it out yet. There are a few ways to bring down the cost. A typical granite countertop slab is 3 centimeters thick, but it also comes in a lower cost 2-centimeter version. Granite can also be bought as tiles rather than a full slab to lower the price tag.
Related: 8 Easy and Affordable Ways to Upgrade Your Kitchen
Depending on where you live, you may have multiple options for suppliers. Itโs good practice to get a few quotes to compare. If you have a small project, some stores sell slab leftovers. Often greatly discounted, remnant pieces are a good option for small bathrooms or bar areas.
Installation can be tricky. The weight of granite makes this a multi-person job. Granite needs to be installed to the exact measurements of your cabinets. Since the countertop canโt be measured until cabinets are installed, it can add time to the completion of a project.
After installation, granite should be sealed to help provide additional protection against staining and bacterial growth. Regular use gradually wears away at the sealant, which can leave your counters susceptible to stubborn stains. Granite should periodically be resealed every 2 to 4 years to help protect the finish.
Itโs important to clean and buff granite regularly to keep its glossy shine. You can also use soap and water for everyday clean ups. Steer clear of abrasive cleaners, acidic substances, or scratchy pads, all of which can wear away at the seal.
For additional protection, avoid placing oils, acidic foods, wet containers, or meats directly onto the granite.
You picked out every detail โ like those granite countertops โ to make your house feel like a home. At Byer’s Insurance, we think yourย homeowner’s insuranceย should have that just-right feeling, too.

Being knowledgable about your craft is important in business. It’s even more important when it comes to your child’s health. Gleaned not only from formal education but also from hands-on real-world experience. Fun Fact: only 6 of 100 dental school graduates go on to become orthodontists? After completing his undergraduate program, Dr. Lawless completed 4 years of dental school, followed by a rigorous residency, and a Masterโs of Science degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In addition, his office assistants are certified orthodontic assistants through OrthoAssist, which means they not only studied dental assisting, but they also have attended a specialty program to learn specifically about orthodontic practices.
Dr. Lawless and his entire team regularly attend continuing education courses in order to stay current on the latest orthodontic technology. These courses include annual association meetings, study clubs, OSHA courses, and local continuing education opportunities.

Unfortunate for us registered Independents Kentucky has a closed primary. That means non-partisan registered voters may only vote for non-partisan races or issues in the primary election. There will not be any non-partisan races this year in Warren County.ย ย
So basically, only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary, and only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary. Editors note: that’s right taxpayers are paying for party elections.

As we roll into the warm Summer months itโs time to prepare. Not only for the heat but with better health. Swing by for a class or two with Yoga Daddy and Yoga Momma at Hot Yoga Bowling Green:
Welcome to the most European feeling and looking province in North AmericaโฆQuebec, Canada. We speak very little French but the locals in the province also speak English and are very helpful, so itโs the best of both worlds! We spent most of our time in Quebec City so it is skewed to that great city. You will love wandering around the old town of Quebec City. It has fantastic architecture that makes you feel like youโre in France. Thereโs a lot to do but it still has a small town feel. Itโs nice and cool in the Summer but if you love the Winter, itโs also a great spot for amazing winter decorations and lots of SNOW!
1. La Citadelle de Quebec- Watch the changing of the guard at La Citadelle de Quebec. This is a ceremony that takes place daily. It marks the arrival of new sentries to relieve those on duty at the garrison. Itโs a colorful military tradition and includes the regimental mascot Bastisse the Goat, dressed in his finest!ย

2. Old Quebec- Walk around the Chateau Frontenac and admire the beautiful architecture and grounds. This hotel is one of the most photographed hotels in the world. As you gaze upon its vastness and beauty, you will quickly understand why. You can also watch Quebecโs beloved street performers (Buskers) that perform outside the hotel. They are truly talented and worth stopping to watch their talent and skill. Catch a quick ride on the Old Quebec Funicular, a funicular railway that links the upper town with the lower town, for a unique experience. The architecture is breathtaking. Peppered through the city are many intricate murals. These murals show off the artistic nature of Quebec. Also, donโt miss out on visiting one of the oldest churches in North America, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. It served as a filming location for the movie โCatch Me If You Canโ for the filmโs final scene!ย

3. Waterfalls- Behold the Montmorency Waterfalls. The spectacular 275-feet tall falls on the Montmorency River. Fun fact, Montmorency Waterfalls tower higher than Niagara Falls! You can enjoy the beauty of the Falls from the ground, on a walkway at the top of the Falls, from the street as you drive by or Zip Line right in front of the Falls! Talk about a scenic view!

4. Whale Watching- All Aboard! Get ready for some amazing sights as you board the Croisieres AML for a Whale watching tour in Baie-Sainte-Catherine, Quebec. If youโre looking for a truly unique and memorable experience, this is it! Enjoy breathtaking landscapes banked on both the St. Lawrence and Riviรจre Saguenay. Be prepared with your camera ready to shoot as you encounter many species of whales. We repeat donโt forget your camera and be prepared to have a spotter! Side note: This ship has the best hot chocolate Iโve ever tasted! Ahoy Chocolate Deliciousness.ย

5. Shopping- Quebec City has beautiful streets filled with local boutiques, art galleries, and gourmet food shops. The Petit Champlain District is North Americaโs oldest shopping district. Itโs filled with artisanal boutiques and decorative art shops. The rue Saint-Jean District boasts delightfully original local shops. You are sure to find the perfect Quรฉbรฉcois souvenir here. The Old Port is for the antique lovers and the Art District has a lively atmosphere. If you are a foodie don’t worry as there are many gourmet food shops. The Farmerโs Markets here are absolument parfait (absolutely perfect)! Grab a fresh croissant or baguette from one of the many French local boulangers/bakers. As you enjoy your baguette or chocolate croissant take a stroll through the market.ย There you will find the freshest produce and flowers. You will be magically transported to France. Or, perhaps, you are more of a mall person. While our malls seem to be dissolving in the United States, Quebecโs malls are thriving. In fact, Quebec malls feel like the 1990โs malls of our pastโincluding merchandise from our 1990โs malls! Anyone remember Bombay Company and smoking cigarettes at the entryway? 6. Lavender fieldsย at Bleu Lavande-ย Quebec City was our base and we left for New England (which we’ll cover on a later post) after our time in QC ended. Driving about 280km south (3-hour drive) toward Interstate 91 in the United States happens to sit a farm. The Bleu Lavande company farm that produces natural lavender products. The thing is the farm also has a wonderful store, fields for Instagram photos, massage tables (yes, a full massage with the scent of Lavender fields around you), Cafe, tours and more. It’s a must stop to buy products (which we are still using) and to support the local farmers of southern Quebec. Plus, look out for the “Witch House” inย Fitch Bay.

We hope this is a list to help you get started on your trip to Quebec. One of our favorite trips of recent summer family vacations. Feel free to email us for more suggestions at BuyLocalBG@Gmail.com

There isn’t a day that goes by we don’t get asked if we’d like CBD oil. It’s probably the most popular new item in many stores. We even have seen it sold in a diner in Nashville. It was right next to the toothpicks and bubble gum. That said, it’s still medicine for your body and you need to be careful if you are currently on other prescriptions.

All diabetic patients should keep up to date on their healthcare visits to assess diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy. At home, you can check your feet daily for cuts, sores, blisters, redness, or other problems. Report any problems to your primary physician. Also, have your eyes checked every year to assess any changes in vision that may occur. It is also important for you to monitor your blood glucose to determine how your diabetes management plan is working. You should also record these numbers in a diary and take them to your next physician appointment to allow for the best possible care.

Your childโs baby teeth are at risk for decay as soon as they first appearโwhich is typically around age 6 months. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers is often referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. It most often occurs in the upper front teeth, but other teeth may also be affected. In some cases, infants and toddlers experience decay so severe that their teeth cannot be saved and need to be removed.
The good news is that tooth decay is preventable! Most children have a full set of 20 baby teeth by the time they are 3-years-old. As your child grows, their jaws also grow, making room for their permanent teeth.

Welcome to the first ever Bowling Green Downtown District Restaurant Week!
Each year thousands of patrons flood their city’s restaurants during restaurant weeks to show support of the local dining scene. These restaurants benefit through high traffic not just for a single week, but for many months to come. Some customers find their new favorite restaurant via restaurant week!
Downtown Bowling Green has so many great locally owned and chef driven restaurants we’d be foolish not to show them off.
Join us Downtown every night March 11-17. Each restaurant is asked to offer a three course menu at the price of $27 per person, but be on the lookout for other specials and additional programming!
More casual/lower price point spots are asked to offer lunch/dinner for two at the $27 price point.
We have a growing list of participants and can’t wait for this long overdue event! Follow the event page on Facebook for updates!
With the wild wind and rain of the past weeks, itโs been hard to be a front door in my neighborhood. My poor front door needs protection, does yours? Whether you need a basic storm door to keep the weather off your entry door or a decorative storm door to accent your home, Capitol Window and Door can find something that will work for you.Storm doors offer beauty and protection โ usually at a very low price. Even if you arenโt really that interested in storm doors, think of it as preventative maintenance for your entry door.
Spending a few hundred dollars on a storm door can save you from spending a few thousand dollars on a new entry door. At Capitol Window and Door, they carry a large variety of storm doors. They also have access to two other suppliers for those who need specific colors or glass styles, National Pride and ProviaTM Door.
Storm doors are much like replacement windows in that you have to actually get your hands on one to understand the difference between a low- and high-quality door. A good storm door will actually be quite heavy because of the thicker aluminum used. To check them out in person, head down to State Street showroom of Capitol Window and Door.
Capitol Window and Door is located at 202 State Street in downtown Bowling Green. Call 842-9421 to get your free in-home estimate today or check them out online at www.capitolwindowanddoor.com or check them out on facebook.

Imagine what it would be like if you suddenly lost one or two of your front teeth. Smiling, talking, eatingโeverything would suddenly be affected. Knowing how to prevent injuries to your mouth and face is especially important if you participate in organized sports or other recreational activities this summer.
Mouthguards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw. They typically cover the upper teeth and are a great way to protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining.
When it comes to protecting your mouth, a mouthguard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard equipment from an early age. While collision and contact sports, such as boxing, are higher-risk sports for the mouth, any athlete may experience a dental injury in non-contact activities too, such as gymnastics and skating.
The best mouthguard is one that has been custom made for your mouth by Destiny Dental. However, if you canโt afford a custom-made mouthguard, you should still wear a stock mouthguard or a boil-and-bite mouthguard from the drugstore. Learn more about each option:
A properly fitted mouthguard may be especially important for people who wear braces or have fixed bridge work. A blow to the face could damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances. A mouthguard also provides a barrier between the braces and your cheek or lips, which will help you avoid injuries to your gums and cheeks.
Talk to Destiny Dental about selecting a mouthguard that will provide the right protection. Although some mouthguards only cover the upper teeth, Dr. Davis or Dr. Robertson may suggest that you use a mouthguard on the lower teeth if you have braces on these teeth.
If you have a retainer or other removable appliance, do not wear it during any contact sports.
Asking Destiny Dental when is the right time to replace your mouthguard is a smart move, but replace it immediately if it shows sign of wear, is damaged or ill fitting. Teens and children may need to replace their mouthguards more often because their mouths are still growing and changing.
Call Destiny Dental for more questions about Dental Health or to see if you a can schedule an appointment for consultation on mouth guards and other dental issues that may arise. They are located at 1720 Destiny Lane and can be reached by phone at 842-3554. Donโt forget to fan them on facebook.

In April of 2018 (around Easter) something glorious happened. We visited New Orleans and the weather was glorious! Unlike most who visit now we experienced the highs in the mid 70โs. It was less crowded than usual. Other than the filming (Tom Hardy was filming his new Capone movie around the corner and The Purge TV show was also filming at nearby Loyola University) there wasnโt many crowds. So our conditions were perfect. Less also because Mardi Gras had ended and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was right around the corner. This gave us a great opportunity to talk to the locals who grew up in the area.
We most likely ate at a place you love. Full disclosure, the list below were our favorite spots and none of them were expensive. They also were very casual. So, there are fine dining places with awards all over their walls. This is not that article. We were staying in the Garden District off Magazine Street so we are also Garden District heavy.

First off, leave the quarter. Itโs a tourist trap. Get out into the Garden District and take a ride on the St. Charles Streetcar Line. As the line turns right onto South Carrolton, that is where you need to hop off. There you will find The Camellia Grill. Uptown locals, Tulane & Loyola Students and tourists are sitting side by side on one of the 28 stools in the small, yet nicely decorated room. The Beef Bacon burgerโs are better here than most places Iโve eaten around the United States. The chocolate freeze with ice cream is a wonderful drink that is better than any milkshake Iโve had and very filling. I loved this place and if you follow me, you know I donโt usually eat meat or dairy. The Pecan pie is a Chocolate Pecan Pie fried in butter. Need we say more. Just order it and split it if you are already full. OK, also the service is what you have come to expect from every place in New Orleans but somehow itโs even better.

See Menu by googling: โcamellia grill new orleans menuโ and Google has it for you. Itโs the most accurate online weโve found.
This was not first on THIS list but it is definitely first in our familyโs heart. We cancelled three other restaurant visits so we could go back for shrimp po-boys. Domilieseโs has been around since the 1920s for a very good reason. They are the best at what they do and what they do is make great po-boy sandwiches. The recently passed Anthony Bourdain featured this restaurant in his Layover show and they even have a sandwich specifically to honor him. But it was on our list to visit since we were staying in the neighborhood. This place is very popular with locals. It was confirmed by a high-five from a tour guide because we suggested this place to Canadian tourists. For us, it was the shrimp po-boy and that baguette. The shrimp was huge, fried and properly dressed sandwich on a baguette that had that perfect crunch. This is also another great spot for Loyola and Tulane students. Our daughter is not a shrimp fan so she grabbed the meatball and said it was superb. Also, they have great onion rings. There is a bar inside this restaurant. We got Barqโs root beer because we were told it was the local way.

A snoball place? I know, right. Not a place people usually put on a โMust Hitโ list. Seriously though. We grabbed a variation of a banana flavor the two times we visited and the glorious chocolate with their housemade sweetened condensed milk was ordered both times as well. This place is great for the kiddos both big and small. Plus, I was not familiar with Snoballs being a popular and local treat in New Orleans. There are many snoball stands but the locals we talked to love this specific one. We had a wonderful conversation about how important this place was with people from the neighborhood and the wonderful owner Donna Black. Who, I have to say after meeting her during closing time, is maybe the most hospitable person in New Orleans in a city known for Hospitality. The joy and passion for Snoballs are real and itโs a locals kind of place.

Since the fall of Saigon the Vietnamese community has been a big part of New Orleans. Their work and contribution to New Orleans can not be understated. They went to work in the fishing, oyster and shrimping industry when they arrived in the gulf coast. Many of their children and grandchildren have taken jobs in other industries but their footprint and mark on New Orleans is still seen in the culinary landscape today. Some of those first arrivals opened up po-boy stands because letโs be honest, it was a bรกnh mรฌ to them. There is just such a perfect similarity between these two delicious sandwiches. Also, Vietnam and the Gulf Coast are very similar in many ways and it takes form on each plate in both the traditional and Vietnamese restaurants. In the Early 1980s Huong Tran opened her storefront bakery next to her mother in-laws restaurant. We had come because of the King Cake which is always in high demand during the Mardi Gras season. Unfortunately we were there during Easter and there isnโt a need to make King Cake out of season. So, we settled on a bag of vietnamese candies, cookies and cakes, a great baguette and of course the Grilled Pork bรกnh mรฌ. Mixed reviews on the treats as some were new flavors to our daughter and thatโs to be expected. There was no doubt though the love of the bรกnh mรฌ. The pork was more like a deli slice but tasty. The vegetables were wonderful and I dare say I will return and get a vegetarian version of the bรกnh mรฌ. Plus, that baguette was perfect. It had the perfect crunch on the outside with a soft pillow on the inside. The bakery is filled with cases of cakes, candies and cookies as are the shelves. It is worth the drive if you are fortunate to have a car to get there yourself. Not sure what an Uber would cost to get there but itโs a bit outside of the city center.

Weโre a bit late to the game when it comes to Turkey and Wolf. This is not the secret it was when we were told to visit. Bon appรฉtit beat us there with a great overview video:
That said, this is the greatest hangover cure in New Orleans. This menu, which is a compliment, is some of the most alcohol absorbing food imaginable. We started with the deviled eggs with fried chicken skins with their own house made hot sauce. These are fantastic and are definitely an over the top version of deviled eggs. These may in fact be the Devilโs recipe. We had the Italian American sandwich (as of writing this it has been replaced on the menu). Not our favorite but thatโs why the menu rotates. The star of the show in our eyes was the fried bologna sandwich with leighannโs bologna, hot english mustard, potato chips, shrettuce, mayo, american cheese on white. We had very basic soda but they have a full bar and the drinks have clever names. As the video shows these guys are doing something they love and it shows on the plate. They also work their tails off. As laid back as they seem in that video we ran into the owner huddled in the corner near the restroom working on his computer. When we came out he was making his rounds helping clear tables and make sure patrons were taken care of during the lunch hour. There is a reason this place is getting popular.

Sorry, but we have to be cliche. This is our one tourist trap must do. Cafe Du Monde is legendary and everyone suggests it. So the lines are long. Wait in the line. Sit down and be amazed how many of these little pillows of heaven are served in just the time you are sitting there. Get Beignets at the place that seems to do it best in our humble opinion. The Cafe au lait is wonderful hot while sitting and eating the beignets. Pro Tip: the frozen version is a perfect walking around drink on a warm day. While walking around and being a tourist sip on that cold coffee that is perfectly sweet. If you are in a hurry or driving out of town, grab a bag of beignets. The bag eating of beignets skills is one that all Southern Living citizens should perfect. This is the first tourist trap I visited that I loved being โstuck in.โ

New Orleans has so much going on with the food scene. So many great chefs and so many nice dining options. Yet, we gave you these low cost options for a reason. These gems are the local, working man picks. Thatโs exactly what they are, local favorites. Yes, Commanderโs Palace and Antoineโs do a great job. That said, I will take three visits to Domiliseโs and a snoball over one visit to those places. Enjoy a nice dinner but donโt overlook the New Orleans way the locals do it. If you have a better place for Po-boys, beignets or snoballs leave them in the comments.

Part of Buy Local Bowling Green is to promote our local businesses. It’s also to bring some entertaining interviews and cultural discussions. Another element we’ve added in the past five years is travel tips for different cities. We believe the local element to cities are the best way to experience them.
We have taken many trips to the Capitol of the South, โThe A,โ The Empire City of the South or more appropriate Atlanta. Right off the bat we stayed out by the Perimeter but most of the tourism was downtown. Getting a room for Super Bowl may even push you north to the Georgia/Tennessee line. Here are our MUST HITS of local stuff we tried (We know there is more to explore in Atlanta and will do other posts in the future):

1. Heirloom Market- We found this on a prior trip while seeing a concert at the nearby Cobb Energy Center. This place is not where you would expect. A Korean BBQ that is at a convenience store front located at 2243 Akers Mill Rd SE. We went there for the Spicy Korean BBQ sandwich. OH MY:

This thing is amazing and constructed with pork chopped into cubes, piled onto a potato bun, adding with a good amount of kimchi coleslaw, and lastly a sprinkling of black sesame seeds and a sliced scallion. This is basically what they are known for but their Brisket we had is equal in awesomeness! Atlanta Magazine described these local owners backstory perfectly:
Chef-owners Jiyeon Lee and Cody Taylor met while working at defunct Repast, itself a showplace of next-gen East-meets-West cuisine. Taylor grew up in Texas and Tennessee. Lee recorded hit pop songs in late-โจeighties Korea, then moved to Georgia in 1999 to attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Tucker. Several years ago, while the two were visiting Korea, they began to experiment with tenderizing brisket in soup made with miso. They wondered how the beef might taste smokedโexceptional, they discoveredโand their ideas for cross-cultural barbecue began percolating.
We added a new feature while there (along with the brisket) the Tempura Sweet Potatoes. They are up to par with everything else we have had but, if you love sweet and fried this is your side dish. Fried with a tempura batter and served with their tempura sauce on the side, perfect for dipping. Really, this is north of town. Hit this place first as you move toward the city. Skip The Varsity, go to Heirloom.
2. Buford Highway Farmers Market- As you know, weโve mentioned before, we are members of the Southern Foodways Alliance and they have discussed the culinary significance of these immigrant owned restaurants in the Buford Highway area. The Must Do for the food lover is a trip to Buford Highway Farmers Market. There were things weโve never seen in our lives fruit, vegetable, meat and even processed food wise. This is the most amazing local market under what could have been an old box store roof. You move all throughout the world in one visit:

3. El Rey Del Taco- Since youโll be at Buford Highway Farmers Market give El Rey Del Taco a shot. Probably one of the best places Iโve had tacos in Atlanta but Iโve been proven wrong. If you have another spot let us know. This place is surrounded by Korean joints offering Bubble Tea. Really, Buford Highway is everything that is great about America attracting cultures all over the world to live together.

4. Home grown- Weโve got a consistent must hit in Atlanta. This place is that place. We first went here about three years ago with Chef Josh and Chelsey from Home Cafe and have been addicted since. Weโve bought art, crafts and other weird things in their flea market in the back of the store with an older gentleman jamming on a xylophone and a keyboard. It really is an artsy, big city vibe with Southern offerings in food and a sticker over the register that reads โLove the South Hate The Racists.โ Itโs true to the Southern Heritage when it comes to from scratch goodness but it also is a mix of every imaginable person. Some people call it โHipster.โ Iโd call it what the south is becoming, โwelcoming.โ

No suggestions for Home Grown. Get what sounds good, because it is. Nothing weโve had has been below, โWOW!โ
There is so much to do in the city to our south. So many historical places, new places and just crazy places. We just want you to try to hit the local and the culture of Atlanta when you visit. Thatโs while we will continue to promote the cities we visit on our site because no matter where you are, Buy Local!
If you ask people why they exercise, most will say to stay healthy, keep fit, or because it makes them feel good. Not a lot will mention flexibility as a goal, but itโs a key part of maintaining your health andย avoiding injury, especially as you age. On ice and snow-covered roads, itโs more important than ever to understand the basics of safe driving. Smart winter travel planning, reliable tires and regular vehicle maintenance all go a long way to keeping you safe on the road.
Related: 8 Things Your Car Needs in Winter
But when it comes to driving on ice, there are still some common misconceptions. You might hear conflicting advice on what to do if you lose traction. Should you pump your brakes, or not?
The answer: It depends.
When driving on ice, the safest technique will depend on whether your vehicle has an antilock braking system (ABS). Keep reading to find out when to pump and when not to pump.
Antilock brakes decrease your stopping distance and increase control and stability during hard braking. Itโs an especially useful feature on icy roads, where traction is limited. An antilock braking system is made up of speed sensors mounted on each wheel and an electro-hydraulic braking circuit. When used, ABS prevents your wheels from locking by monitoring the speed of each wheel and automatically pulsating the brake pressure when it detects skidding.
If your vehicle is equipped with ABS, you donโt need to pump the brakes when driving on slippery roads. Why? The brakes do it for you.
If youโre wondering how to use ABS, the answer is simple. Your vehicle will activate it automatically, pulsating the brakes as soon as the system detects a wheel skidding. Just firmly press your foot on the brake and maintain steady pressure. Youโll feel the brake pedal pulsate and the ABS light will flash on the instrument panel.
Itโs important to know your vehicleโs braking system before you end up navigating an icy road. Your ownerโs manual should describe your braking system and how to operate your vehicle in slippery conditions.
As far as vehicle technologies go, antilock brake systems have been around for a while. By the late 1990s, ABS was becoming commonplace, even on entry-level vehicles. And in 2013, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began mandating ABS on all new cars.
If your vehicle was built after 2013, then your vehicle has ABS. But if your car is older, youโll want to check whether ABS was an included option. An ABS light on your dashboard is also an easy indicator of whether or not you have antilock brakes.
Many late-model vehicles are also equipped with traction control or electronic stability control, which can also help when driving on ice.
If your vehicle doesnโt have antilock brakes, manually pumping can help maintain control on slippery roads. Gently apply and release pressure at a moderate rate. Do not apply quick or steady pressure, as this can cause your wheels to lock and your car to skid.
ABS is a great safety feature to help you brake in slick conditions. In places with intermittent winter weather, all-season tires (with high traction and good tread depth) might be your best option. But if you live in a consistently snowy region you may want to consider a set of winter tires.
Related: The Ultimate Guide to Snow Tires
Winter tires are made out of a softer rubber compound than summer or all-season tires. Combined with additional grooves โ sometimes called siping โ winter tires are specially designed to provide the best traction in winter weather.
In fact, according to a Consumer Reports test, winter tires can decrease your stopping distance by up to six feet in ice braking. That could be the difference between a safe stop and a rear-end collision.
Studded or spiked tires only help if youโre driving on extremely and consistently icy roads. However, if youโre interested in these, check with your local Department of Transportation first for rules and regulations. They may not be legal in your area โ and your day-to-day driving conditions might not be severe enough for studded tires to make a difference, anyway Visit a website like Tire Rack to find the best all-season or winter-weather tires for your vehicle based on its year, make and model.
When driving in winter weather, follow these tips:
When you choose ERIE, youโll always get tips and guidance for safe navigation. Why? Because we know the only thing better than a fast and easy claims process after an accident is avoiding accidents altogether. Itโs just one way weโre looking ahead to help you be prepared for the road before you.ย

Contractors face many challenges even when a project is moving ahead as planned. General contractors have contractual obligations and the threat of a financial loss if a construction defect claim is filed. In order to guard against losses associated with injuries or other damages, contractors need the protection provided by a product liability insurance policy.
We live in a litigious world, and there are law firms that make millions by bringing claims against construction professionals, including general contractors, artisans, and specialty contractors. Any project can run into unforeseen problems when something goes wrong and an injury, water damage, or any other incident can result in a lawsuit or claim. Your product liability insurance can save you from financial losses that go far beyond what you could afford out-of-pocket.
Product Defects and Liability for Contractors
Product liability insurance protects you against the responsibility associated with product defects. Any physical item that has been installed in or on a property that was defective, or had design flaws that were not apparent at the time of installation triggers litigation. When a lawsuit is filed, not only will the manufacturer of the product be named, but in most cases, the contractor responsible for installation of the product.
Keep your business healthy by putting the correct policy in place. The level of coverage you need to be protected will be based upon your activities, and the risks associated with those activities. Even if a contractor is not found to be negligent they will likely still be held liable if injuries or damages occur.
While construction contractors are often required to have product liability insurance, the question becomes whether the coverage is adequate and are there better policies available providing better coverage at lower rates?
At Byers Insurance Group in Bowling Green, Kentucky, weโll work to help your business get the best coverage possible โ at the lowest price. Weโre happy to review your current liability insurance policy and offer our professional advice and guidance.

As a small business owner it’s tough to keep up with all the latest trends in your industry. We understand. It’s hard to keep up with trends in the Credit Card Processing & Merchant Service Industry. The great thing is that in 2019 the User Experience will be better. Also, some of the trends will be godsend to the bottom line of many local business owners. Here are our Five Trends to prepare for in 2019.
The payment processing trend that leads most for next year, in-store mobile payments. Becoming the primary payment method in the U.S. By 2020. In-store mobile payments overtaking credit cards, at $503 billion. The speed and convenience is tough to ignore. In-store mobile payments is particularly attractive to a younger generation of consumers.
Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Android Pay, and Samsung Pay are the top mobile wallets. Used at small and medium businesses.. Apple Pay and Google Wallet continue battling it out for the top spot. Android Pay and Samsung Pay still have their share of supporters.
It’s not a secret if you follow us buy Cash Discount helps small businesses compete. Offering a a great marketing tool while saving Cash for the businesses bottom line. Many customers appreciating the transparency as well as a payment option to save. Sure in our “One” we talked about speed and convenience as a top priority for customers. Another priority is saving money. People will gladly pay to use their card with Cash Discount to save time. They also will gladly bring cash if it’s an item they would like to save. Don’t make a decision for your customer. Give them an opportunity to save with the Cash Discount program. Many of our clients have saved tens of thousands freeing up cash to improve the business. Click here for more.
The quicker everyone realizes you are a website with a brick and mortar the quicker the adaptation to the future of business. Having a great website is big. Having a website that takes payments with ease of use is paramount. Itโs unnecessary to offer every single payment method. You will want to have an understanding of which methods your consumers prefer. Select a merchant service provider who can support your specific needs. The exact combination will depend on your customer base. Taking online payments is essential. Doesn’t matter if your a store or restaurant. Don’t block yourself from having a powerful advantage in todayโs market.
According to TYSY, roughly 27.7 million mPOS devices will be in circulation in the U.S. within the next three years. Almost 10 times the amount in 2014. An mPOS device can be cost-effective for small and medium business owners. Many have limited staff and resources for electronic registers and software support. Costs for Credit Cards are higher (those not taking advantage of Cash Discount) for non-mPOS users. The average credit card processing cost for a retail business is around 2 percent for cards that are swiped in-person. Compared with 2.3 percent to 3.1 percent for card-not-present transactions.
It’s strange how tech dominates most of our five but the old tried and true still reigns supreme. Customer Service from your representative remains extremely important. Fly by night or telemarketing sales is going away due to the fact bad contracts and major fees being added to small businesses. Having a rep that will take care of you from initial meeting till the end of time is what everyone is searching. An advocate. Someone who will champion your business and your needs not their sales bottom line.
This is an amazing opportunity heading in to 2019 for your business. Thatโs why we warn you to be wary of MLSs and ISOs (International Standards Organization) who aren’t trying to help you adapt to the coming world. Some are exploiting programs meant to help small businesses. They are following less than ethical practices. When choosing a partner we hope you choose Card Payment Solutions USA and Buy Local Bowling Green.ย Find out more today. Message us onย Facebookย or contact us via email atย MEPannell@gmail.com.

Every day is Tamale Day with Mercadito Hispano! Friend to Buy Local Bowling Green and Author of “Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America” Gustavo Arellano says,ย “It is about sustenance, but not just in the nutritional sense. It’s also in a community sense. It’s also in a spiritual sense,” he says. “It’s the ultimate Christmas gift.” But making tamales is a time-consuming endeavor. It can take a whole day to make a single batch. That’s why many families prefer to buy tamales in bulk for special occasions. These chicken, potato, and green pepper tamales are perfect for any meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after-bar munchies.

Gift cards are a primary option for gifts. More times than not people love receiving gift cards over the actual gifts.ย First Dataโs report titled:ย 2018 Prepaid Consumer Insights Study [download].ย In the report they asked 2,000 consumers about gift cards. They found over 50% of their annual gifting budget goes toward gift cards. Another 40% of consumers surveyed preferring gift cards over traditional gifts. Thatโs powerful stuff. Gift cards can be an effective tool for capturing more revenue. It also help in attracting new customers, and building loyalty. To get the most value out of gift cards, you need a solid strategy.
Here are some tips on executing a successful gifts cards program to help you grow your business:
Many non-retail sectors see increases in sales volume during the holidays. Holiday shopping is still a retailerโs game. During the 2018 holiday shopping season, many factors are set to lift U.S. holiday sales. Some reports as much as 4.8 percent versus 2017. Thatโs up to $720.89 billion dollars, according to the National Retail Federation.
For small retailers, gift cards are a potential Goliath-slayer. They can help them compete for holiday shopping dollars. Itโs predicted that U.S. gift card sales alone will reach $340 billion in 2018.ย Gift cards also put non-retail businesses in the gift-giving mix.ย If you are a restaurant or service-based small business, you can capture holiday dollars by offering gift cards. To do this, youโll first need to create physical or digital gift cards.ย If youโre a Clover customer, you canย use Clover Gift Cardsย and easily set up either or both types of gift cards, complete with custom branding.
Once created you need to be intentional about marketing them to customers. A step that is crucial for success. Send a series of emails to your customer list announcing the availability of gift cards. Recommend them as a convenient and personal holiday gift-giving option. Publish updates about your program on your social media accounts is a must. Post signage inside your business. Include signage in your restaurant.ย Optimal locations like counter, host stations, bar and/or dining room tables, register area, waiting areas, and on your window. And train your staff to offer gift cards to patrons while theyโre checking out or paying their bill. Up the ante with a prize to the highest-referring employees.
Youโve sold gift cards and have the upfront revenue to show for it. Itโs a great start, but the promise of gift cards for adding sales lift to your business doesnโt end there.
Thatโs because of the redemption process. When the recipient comes to your business to buy, it offers your business an opportunity. An opprtunity to earn even more revenue and attract more customers. First Dataโs Study shows, on average, that consumers spend $59 more than the original value of their gift card. Thatโs what makes it so great when they redeem it.
Roll out the red carpet when customers redeem their gift cards. This will further endear them to your business. Retail stores might keep nicely-wrapped accessories behind the counter. This will help add to the new customersโ buy. This strategy can also work for appointment-based businesses. Consider offering sample items that customers can use to extend the life of the service. If youโre a restaurant, you can add a complimentary appetizers, desserts, or drink samples. These are all things that help improve the gift redemption experience.
Gift cards are a great opportunity to encourage repeat visits among new customers. That increases the lifetime value of the customer. Making the ROI larger on the investment for your gift card program. Donโt leave this up to chance. Here are specific actions to convert gift card redeemers into loyal customers.
Leverage gift cards to build loyalty.ย First Dataโs 2018 Prepaid Consumer Insights Study showed that 61 percent of consumers surveyed said they prefer to receive a gift card as a reward for loyalty over a coupon or bonus.
Since they are using a gift card to buy, youโre in a great position to add them to your loyalty program upon redemption.ย For example, if you offer $5 dollars in store cash for every $100 spent, and your new customer has used their $100 gift card, then add a $5 credit to the same card as a โsign up bonusโ for your loyalty program.ย The nice thing about this tactic is that while it will feel like anย additionalย bonus to the recipient, who didnโt pay for the card in the first place, it will be business as usual for you.
Sign them up for communications.ย Your staff can also encourage gift card users to sign up ย to receive texts, emails, and/or mail. You can then offer an exclusive deal or bonus points to shoppers who have enrolled for the first time. (If theyโre already on your mailing list as a gift card user, you can set limitations, so certain deals do not apply).
There are two primary benefits to this tactic. 1) Youโll capture their contact information. Which offers you an opportunity to reach them with new promotions over time. 2) You will force them to sign up with youย beforeย offeringย additionalย perks.ย This increases the likelihood that anyย additionalย deal will promote higher lifetime value for that customer. Increasing the return on investment for your business.
Our customers who use a Clover have most of the data they need from the dashboard. Itโs a way to see how these tips and tactics work for your actual business, and to understand what adjustments youโll need to make in order to improve the program over time. If you are using a traditional Credit Card terminal you will have to create a tracking system to review. Remember: While the holidays can offer a nice boost in gift card activity, gift cards are a great marketing and loyalty tool that you can implement year โround.
Here are two gift card program numbers that you should track for starters:
Redemption percentage.ย What percentage of gift cards sold are being redeemed? Again, while gift card sales represent upfront revenue for your business, redemption is where the real action is, offering an opportunity for you to collect additional revenue. Remember: People usually spend more than the original value of their gift card.
Average ticket size for all customers vs. gift card customers.ย This number is a great metric for gauging how much spending differs between these two customer types. We have to talk about lifetime value again here: If spending is relatively low during the initial visit, but that new customer comes back and spends with your business again, that could mean in terms of lifetime value, your gift card program is well worth the investment.
For more helpful insights about how consumers are using gift cards, and specific ways that gift cards can help grow your business, download Cloverโs full infographic,ย โThe Power of the Gift Card.โย Not using a Clover Point of Sale you can contact your Card Payment Solutions USA Agent for the best way to take advantage of a gift card program.

We are Cash Crop Brewery, a small farm brewery that we are planning to locate in Warren County. Before we can open we need your help. Right now there is a petition circling around, and we need 13,000 signatures to allow us to brew beer on our own farm. Currently as the law stands making, selling, or even possessing alcohol in the county is a crime. We are trying to change that with your help.
Our farm grows its own grains, wheat, oats, and we are looking into planting our own hops in the future. We are trying to make beers that are as local to Warren County as possible. Itโs notworkablee to have this brewery in Bowling Green’s city limits. Due to the size needed to grow most of your own ingredients. Also we are looking to give the people of Warren County an experience they cannot get in the city limits. Our farm is completely secluded. It’s surrounded by trees and wildlife, and wrapped by 5 miles of water frontage on the Barren River. We are looking to do sit down beer dinners, with beef from our own farm, completely outside. We want to bring the joys of nature to the citizens of Bowling Green and Warren County.
We kindly ask you to fill out the online petition. It would go a long way in helping us bring 100% local beer to Bowling Green and Warren County.

Jim Higdon is coming to Bowling Green, Kentucky! Jim Higdon is one of Kentucky’s best writers and a very good reporter. He is speaking at the Bob Kirby Branch. The event is this Tuesday, August 14 at 6:00 in the evening.ย He will discuss his bookย Cornbread Mafia: A Homegrown Syndicate’s Code Of Silence And The Biggest Marijuana Bust In American History. One of our favorite books. This event is part of the Kentucky True Crime series Bluegrass Confidential. Get Your Tickets by clickingย HERE!
In the summer of 1987, Johnny Boone set out to grow and harvest one of the greatest outdoor marijuana crops in modern times. In doing so, he set into motion a series of events that defined him and his associates as the largest homegrown marijuana syndicate in American history, also known asย the Cornbread Mafia.
ย ย ย ย Author James Higdonโwhose relationship with Johnny Boone, currently a federal fugitive, made him the first journalist subpoenaed under the Obama administrationโtakes readers back to the 1970s and โ80s and the clash between federal and local law enforcement and a band of Kentucky farmers with moonshine and pride in their bloodlines. By 1989 the task force assigned to take down men like Johnny Boone had arrested sixty-nine men and one woman from busts on twenty-nine farms in ten states, and seized two hundred tons of pot. Of the seventy individuals arrested, zero talked.ย How it all went down is a tale of Mafia-style storylines emanating from the Bluegrass State, and populated by Vietnam veterans and weed-loving characters caught up in Tarantino-level violence and heart-breaking altruism.
ย ย ย ย Accompanied by a soundtrack of rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues, this work of dogged investigative journalism and history is told by Higdon in action-packed, colorful and riveting detail.
Mr. Higdon is also a well known National reporter. With a recent articles in Politico discussing Hemp and Senator McConnell. He’s also an interesting person to speak with and you’re not going to want to miss this opportunity. If you can’t make it you can find him on Twitter.

Eliminate Merchant Fees with the Cash Discount Program from Buy Local Bowling Green and Kentucky CPS! Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, itโs not. We have many clients from Liquor Stores, Salons, Counter Service Restaurants and more using this new program. You may be wondering, โWhat is a โCash Discount Program?’โ
Credit card processing can come with some hefty fees and is becoming increasingly expensive for merchants. This is especially a challenge for small businesses with small budgets. Interchange fees, otherwise known as swipe fees, can become a financial burden on small businesses. This is where the cash discount program comes in.
If you are a business owner, big or small, youโve most likelyย heard something about theย cash discount programย in the merchant service industry. However, this program has come with a fair amount of confusion. Many wonder about what the program can and canโt do. We are going to take a closer, more detailed, look at what this program. Weโll give you the information you need to help decide if this is the right merchant service for you.
By offering access to aย cash discount programย to customers who pay with cash, merchants are able to eliminate 100% of their processing fees with the addition of customer service fees on all sales. In this situation, merchants are required to display a customer-pricing notice. This will inform each customer about the customer service fee that is charged onย allย transactions.
An easy example. A merchant charges a 5% service fee. On each item the notice will reflect that a product or service that is listed at $100 will actually be $105. That is unless the customer is paying with cash. In this case, the customer paying with cash will be discounted. The service fee charge goes away and they only pay the original $100. Convenience or surcharge fees are not the same as a cash discount program.
You may be asking yourself, โWould it not be easier to just settle with increasing the price by 5% and call it a day?โ Thatโs a fair question, and honestly, the result may or may not be the same in the end. However, the transparency with the cash discount program will be a detail that is not lost on your customers. The Cash Discount Program is automated. Where surcharge fees are manually calculated. This requires pricing to be increased across the board. That results in customers always paying โfullโ price. Customers generally respond favorably to the option of saving by paying with cash. In short, show me someone who doesnโt like to save money on purchases and Iโll show you a liar. Give the people what they want and your business will benefit in return.
Theย cash discount programย can also be a great marketing tool, which can potentially attract new customers. Customers are naturally drawn to the word โsale.โ Most stores will display a โsaleโ sign year round to lure customers into their store. Getting people in the store, sale or not is the ultimate goal. Ideally, they come in for the sale items and walk out with much more. Although a 5% discount across the board does help merchants. The cash discount program can be a better and more powerful tool when correctly implemented.
Being able to eliminate up to 100% of processing fees is something that is extremely alluring to most merchants. This is also something that merchant level salespeople (MLSs) benefit from as well. The higher than average margins that come with the program mean they make more as well.
Although this is an amazing opportunity for the industry, be wary of MLSs and ISOs (International Standards Organization). Some are exploiting the program and following less than ethical practices. When choosing a partner we hope you choose Buy Local Bowling Green.ย To find out more message us on Facebook or contact us via email at BuyLocalBG@Gmail.com.

The dream of running a restaurant may include curating the perfect space for joyful gatherings and magical evenings of great food and drink, with you playing the gracious host, who just happens to profit off the whole happy affair.
But the reality of running a restaurant is more like living life in the eye of a storm. The daily barrage of customer demands, managing cooks and wait staff, mounting stress from the 24/7 nature of the job and staying ahead of the competitionโall on razor-thin margins.
Thereโs a lot to stay on top of in the pursuit of profitability. Perhaps youโve relied on business techniques such as sales promotions, honing your marketing strategy, or nailing an effective advertising plan. These customer-facing methods are helpful, but itโs also important to look within. Itโs less splashy, but absolutely essential to the health of your restaurant.
Today, weโre going to focus on one critical component that can make the difference between whether your restaurant thrives or shuts downโmanaging your food cost percentage.
Your food cost percentage directly impacts your bottom line.
What is it? Simply put, it calculates the cost of your ingredients as a percentage of food sales.
Especially for restaurants operating on barely-there profits, any variation in the cost of your ingredients or mismanagement of inventory can deeply impact your margins.
Most restaurants work with a food cost percentage of roughly 20 to 30 percent. But the real comparison game you want to play is comparing your actual food cost with your ideal food cost.
Your ideal food cost will be different from your actual food cost because it wonโt account for variances that occur in the real world, such as wasted inventory, serving inconsistent portions, theft and fluctuations in market prices. And thatโs the pointโthis benchmark will help you identify where your actual food cost has gone astray.
Hereโs the formula for calculating your ideal food cost.
Total cost of ingredients used in all plates รท total sales = Ideal food cost
So letโs break this formula down.
Total cost of ingredients used in all plates.ย You arrive at this number by calculating exactly what ingredients, and how much of each ingredient, goes into each menu item.
For the sake of simplicity, letโs say your restaurant is a food truck selling only chips and guacamole. An order of chips and guacamole would include the per-plate cost of the chips, avocado, onion, garlic, jalapeno, cilantro, salt and lime. Then youโd multiply this cost by the number of these items sold in this period. You can pull this information using Clover Insights (from the popular Point of Sale we offer).
And if youโre operating a restaurant with a full menu, you would do this for every menu item and add everything up for your total cost of ingredients used in all plates.
Total sales.ย Multiply the sales prices of each dish by the number of each dish sold.
If we look simply at the chips and guacamole food truck example, the ideal food cost is calculated as follows:
Per-plate cost of ingredients for chips and guacamole: $1
Number of units sold this week: 100
Cost of ingredients: $1 x 100 = $100
Per-plate sales price for chips and guacamole: $4
Number of units sold this week: 100
Food sales: $4 x 100 = $400
Total cost of ingredients used in all plates รท total food sales = Ideal food costs
100 รท 400 = 0.25
Your ideal food cost percentage is 25%.
Doing this calculation manually for your entire menu is cumbersome, but with the right inventory and sales software, you can have this calculation run automatically.
Now itโs time to calculate your actual food cost percentage.
Youโll use this formula:
(Beginning inventory + Purchases โ Ending inventory) รท Food sales = Actual food cost
Letโs stick to the same one week time period. Again, letโs break this formula down.
Beginning inventory.ย At the start of the week youโll calculate the total cost of all of your inventory.
Purchases.ย Calculate the cost of all new inventory purchased that week.
Ending inventory.ย At the end of the week, calculate the cost of all of your remaining inventory
Food sales.ย At the end of the week, add up your total food sales generated during this period.
Going back to our chips and guacamole food truck example, letโs say we came up with the following numbers:
Beginning inventory: $60
Purchases: $80
Ending Inventory: $20
Food sales: $400
(Beginning inventory + Purchases โ Ending inventory) รท Food sales = Actual food cost
($60 + $80 โ $20) รท $400
$120 รท $400 = 0.30
Your actual food cost percentage is 30%.
Now that you have both your ideal cost and actual cost figures, compare the two. Using our chips and guacamole food truck example, thereโs a discrepancy. Our ideal food cost percentage is 25%, compared with our actual food cost percentage of 30%, which tells us that something is amiss, and gives us reason to investigate further.
Many reasons could explain the actual vs. ideal cost discrepancy and each has its own solution.
At the end of the day, having these two calculations offer you critical insight into your restaurantโs profitability and help you pinpoint exactly where you can improve.
As a restaurant owner, your work is nonstop as you juggle managing employees, keeping customers happy and implementing strategies to expand your business.
But remember that despite the nonstop activity on the restaurant floor, itโs crucial that you take time to pause and examine whatโs happening behind the scenes. By keeping an eye on your inventory and food cost metrics and making adjustments to prices, portions, and other factors based on the numbers you see, youโll be on your way toward increased profitability.

EnRoute, a new program from Erie Insurance, makes it easy for business customers to share their driving data and thereby potentially lower business auto premiums and reduce driving risk.
EnRoute uses driving and vehicle data from vehicle-installed telematics devices and smartphone apps to help business owners recognize how choices, such as routes, driver actions and the types of vehicles driven, affect driving performance and safety.ย The program works with more than 40 telematics service providers and nearly a dozen telematics-enabled vehicle manufacturers.
โCrashes cost employers billions of dollars annually in medical care, lost productivity, legal expenses and property damage,โย says ERIEโs Leo Heintz, vice president, Commercial Products.ย โBy harnessing the power of telematics services, EnRoute delivers driving intelligence to help our customers protect their drivers, employees and businesses.โ
On-the-job crashes and your bottom line
For many businesses, theย most dangerous part of the workdayย is the time employees spend in their vehicles. In fact, the average car accident costs an employer $16,500, according toย research conducted by OSHA. If an on-the-job crash results in an injury, the average cost to the driverโs employer is $74,000.1
Yet, fleets with active telematics programs experience up to 11 percent fewer losses from collisions, according to studies conducted by theย Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.2
How EnRoute works to help lower insurance costs
You may be eligible to save up to 10 percent on your business auto insurance policy, if you have telematics devices installed on at least two-thirds of your commercial vehicles and a positive fleet or FAIR Scoreยฎ.3
Similar to a financial credit score, the FAIR Scoreยฎ allows you to see at a glance where your business stands on a driving risk index that compares fleets of similar type and territory. The FAIR Score is an overall risk ranking for theย entireย fleet that looks at vehicle characteristics and the driven environment, in addition to vehicle performance. Monitored weekly, with monthly trend reports, the FAIR Score lets managers put safety first and reduce risk.
With EnRoute, youโll also have access to an easy-to-understand online portal that allows you to see which drivers are improving your score and which ones have room for improvement.ย Identifying and analyzing contextual driving risks may lead to better driving performance, a reduction in risky driving and improved driving safety.
If you donโt have telematics devices on your vehicles and youโre interested in this technology, you can purchase the devices from one of theย EnRoute service providers.

First things first, Chicago Pizza is not Pizza it’s Lasagna. Sorry Windy City you are the best at Hot Dogs and anything that deals with encased meats. So, that should give you a clue on our taste in Pizza. Also, this is our opinion and we welcome your opinions below. To be fair we are basing this off three places. So let’s give you the rundown and below we will rank them. Let’s start in the Midwest.
I have to say this is the most shocking of all the places we went to of the three. We never thought of Michigan as a contender for best pizza. Chicago gets most of the midwest love and it’s completely justified. If you want a thick pizza Detroit style is the only style worth it’s weight in dough. Buddy’s on Conant Street got off to a good start. Anytime I see off duty cops hanging out at a place you have to assume they know the spots to eat. Then followed by some Union guys getting off their shift and families.
This place is the birthplace of Detroit style pizza. It opened in the 1930s more as an after hours drinking spot with a little gambling. It has that feel in a good way still today. Right away, the staff was on point. very attentive and helpful. In 1946 they put Pizza on the menu.
We ordered Theย Detroiter: Cheese, pepperoni on top, tomato basil sauce, topped with shaved parmesan cheese and Buddyโs Sicilian spice blend.ย It’s all about the crust and the caramelized cheese on the corner and edge of the pan slices. Somehow this pizza is best when on the corner of the pan. The middle is OK but the corner slices are amazing. The thing that is also great is this pizza (unlike the Lasagna Chicago Style) is it won’t make you feel like you gained 15 pounds eating it. It’s very light. Which is good because they offer something I had never had before,ย Vernor’s Ginger Ale Float! It blew my mind.
It’s the total opposite of the midwest counterparts and actually has more in common with NYC and Italian pizza. It’s flat and thin. New Haven does cook theirs a little more to give it a slight burnt taste (which was great). They don’t do a ton of cheese. In fact one of our pizzas had a light taste of cheese and it was my favorite of Frank’s. It’s very simple. The dough is very crispy from the over night fermenting. The coal ovens in this place is beautiful and have been working more than most in the place have been alive.
My favorite was theย The Original Tomato Pie w/ Mozzarella. Hands down the best at Frank Pepe’s. We also got one with Fresh Tomato on top and it was good but it made it a little soggy, for me. All this said the thing that made Frank’s great in my book was theย White Clam Pizza. Made with Fresh Clams w/ Grated Cheese, Olive Oil, Fresh Garlic & Oregano. Not because it was great, it was, but because I hate clams. I don’t like clams. Yet, I loved them on this pizza. They took anย ingredient I despised and made me love it. Our daughter loved her pizza which was a bacon (mind blowing bacon) and cheese pizza. Below is a little sample of what we had.
Ambiance is key here. I got caught in it and declared it the best after we ate here. There is something about the neighborhood. It’s a by the slice shop and it’s all to-go. Even though we sat in the window. It’s not sit down like we did on the other two. The dough and cheese with the tomato is so simple here. The Pepperoni was good but Detroit style was the only with Meat that I loved. That said, this will not be my favorite below taste wise. Although, those photos show why the ambiance is so cool at Joe’s.
If you ask me on the street, I may have a new top three. These are all 1a, 1b and 1c. You need to visit all three locations.
Soon we’ll need to do our favorite slice of Pizza in Bowling Green. Who wants to help us eat some pizza?

Every city has it’s good things and it’s not so good things. New Orleans is no different. If you visit the Crescent City be prepared, this is a place with a whole lot of great things. Because of that attracts people which ultimately can make some good things not so good.
Let’s get this going and let’s get the bad out of the way.
The Heat-ย Unless you go when it’s cold during the winter (and it can get cold) there is only a small window of great weather. Typically late March through April is the nice season in New Orleans. The rest of the time there are some elements of heat or weather you are dealing with. The great Blues guitarist Albert King even has an Album called “New Orleans Heat.”Just keep hydrated with water.ย Everyย serving of alcohol (a shot of spirits, a glass of wine, aย beer, etc) causes you to lose, on average, 4 ounces ofย waterย along with halfย of allย the replacement fluid you consume over the following 2 hours. A good rule of thumb to compensate for these losses is to alternate between alcoholic beverages andย water.
Drunks-ย We’re not talking about the locals. Locals know how to pace themselves. Although, we may even be talking about you. So, spare everybody. Pace yourself and take our advice from the last point. Be mindful you are a guest in the city. If you want to avoid the drunks we have tips for that. The earlier you get to the French Quarter the better the chance you won’t run into drunk tourists. In fact we went as most shops were opening and tours were starting and we pretty much avoided drunks the whole week. Now, if it’s Mardi Gras or Jazzfest it probably won’t matter what time you arrive as there is a party to be had 24 hours a day. Just be mindful that there can be some annoying out of state drunks ruining your trip. Don’t let it. Try to avoid drunk areas and times if possible.
Parking in the Tourist Areas-ย Pro Tip, park atย Place d’Armes Hotel. It’s going to cost you a bit but it was our best place for parking. There were times it was full though and finding a spot may be tough. If it’s not open just get near theย Toulouse Station Parking off Decatur Street. WARNING, if you use the app make sure the payment goes through. We came back with a boot on our car because our phone timed out and we didn’t follow our own rule to confirm the payment went through. It’s something you’ll hate is the parking but it’s something you’ll need if you have a car. If you have a place you want to go that you can take by streetcar, do that. It’s less expensive and it’s more charming than being stuck in your vehicle.
Hustlers-ย Most people who are trying to get the cash out of your wallet aren’t criminals in New Orleans. In fact most put on a good show. Tip the musicians and enjoy the performers in New Orleans. That said, if someone comes up and starts asking you questions and wanting to bet you on something, avoid them like the plague or as one tour guide told us to say, “I’m a Local.” Usually they will back off. It’s very rare though to get people who are unfriendly coming up to you and most are very respectful.
People Not Respecting the Culture-ย There is a bunch of what we don’t like that comes from other tourists. Knowing something about where you are going is beneficial to everyone around you. We’ve seen grown adults dancing provocative in front of a group of kids (many band performers are kids themselves) to people acting like many of the performers are a character from a movie they’ve watched and play towards stereotypes. Don’t ask every person for their Katrina Story. They will share if they want to and there are many museum like opportunities to see and hear those stories. We suggest taking a tour first day in the morning when you get there to start learning the history if you hadn’t read up ahead of time. Also, stop requesting “When the Saints go marching in.”
The People- The locals may sound like they are a transplant from New York but that accent is pure New Orleans. The real locals of New Orleans love their city more than anyone loves their city. They’ve been through a lot and they want to protect their traditions. They also want you to have a great time, enjoy their city and then come back with more friends. The people are what make New Orleans. So much talent, love and it’s a joy knowing these are our fellow brothers and sisters. Pro Tip: Strike up a casual conversation about the city. The locals are great at getting a real feel for the city.
The Food-ย Yesterday we posted six places we loved about New Orleans Food. From snoballs, beignets, po-boys, red beans and rice, crawfish and jambalaya you can find someone doing it right all over the city. For the record, Shrimp and Grits is more Low Country Carolina. Some serve it but this is not what they are known for in New Orleans. I say that and then follow up with who cares. They seem to be cooking food from all over the world better than most. Only rivaled in my mind with culinary cities like Los Angeles, Houston or Miami. Pro Tip: Ask a local their favorite spot. They will tell you a place most people are overlooking.
The Culture-ย Seriously, get a tour about the art, history and music of the region. Learn the history of the Spanish, French and Enslaved before the United States purchased it in 1803. Find out about the history of Storyville, Treme and the brothels that started Jass now Jazz. Stand in Congo Square. Congo Square is an area the enslaved culture would gather and helped influence the creators ofย Rock, R&B, Jazz and so much more. Also learn more on a tour about Theย Native American and Mardi Gras Indian culture and how it’s reflected today during Mardi Gras. On a tour we took we went to the birthplace of Rock.ย Cosimo Matassaโs J&M Recording Studios, operational from 1945 through spring 1956, is rightly recognized as a birthplace of rock โnโ roll through several seminal titles, when the music was still known as rhythm and blues. These included โGood Rocking Tonightโ by Roy Brown in 1947, โThe Fat Manโ by Fats Domino in 1949, and โTutti Fruttiโ by Little Richard in 1955. In addition, there were many other important hits from J&M, such as โTipitinaโ by Professor Longhair in 1953 and โSee You Later, Alligatorโ by Bobby Charles in 1955. Even modern history of New Orleans is influencing music with New Orleans Bounce and Sludge Metal.
Great American City-ย There is not another New Orleans. Nowhere in the world is anything like New Orleans for better or worse. This is a true look at what America is supposed to be. A Mix and mash of cultures working together. Sometimes slow to let go of traditions but a beautiful look at our future with an honest look at our past. Great places to visit fromย St. Louis Cathedral to abandoned Forts and repurposed buildings.
Entertainment-ย To say New Orleans is a music town is an understatement. To say it is a “Party Town” is also true. But, it’s also a sports city, a parade city, a museum city, an art city and so much more. You will run out of time before being able to see everything. The history in the city alone would take a decade to really see and understand. Like the food, moderation is best. That said, you won’t be moderating much. You will eat too much, you will consume to much and you’re going to have a great time in one of the South’s greatest cities, dare I say one of Earth’s greatest cities.
