The one thing we noticed when we started this project of promoting local businesses was the amount of local businesses hire local people to their small business. One of our partners is Grinstead’s flooring a furnishing and they hire exclusively local workers to our region. With 2 sales representatives (plus Owner, Gary Grinstead) who are from Warren County and at any time three crews of two that do their installs the staff is comprised of neighbors who want to help make Bowling Green beautiful, one home at a time. Haru Sushi is the best in Bowling Green! I’ve tried everywhere in BG and Haru is amazing! Service is great. The hostess is pleasant and polite, the waitress will make sure your drink is always full. The restaurant is clean and decorated nicely. The Mermaid roll is my favorite, try it, you will love it! The fried roll Sunday Morning (I think.. Sunday something) is also delicious if you prefer fried. Some places let the fried rolls sit so the crust gets gummy and they get cold. My husband, children and I ate here during a vacation stay in Bowling Green. We have a favorite sushi restaurant in Charlotte North Carolina where we are from. We have never really found a restaurant that came close to our favorite, but we thought this one was comparable. The prices were much better than at home. We had seven rolls for $70. They were all excellent. They had some fruit rolls which we thought were very novel and delicious. They were very willing to try to re-create one of our favorite rolls from home. Nathan and I are getting ready to announce our Kiva loan to fund a certified kitchen at our new farm in Halfway, Kentucky. Over the last couple of years we have learned that one of the main obstacles for the local food movement is the ability for farmers to be able to grow and distribute their food directly to their community. As governmental regulations related to sanitary requirements increased in the early to mid 1900′s fewer farmers produced food for direct sale to consumers (Food and Everyday Life, Willigen & Willigen). We all know what this has done to our local farmers, the food they grow and our communities. In order to bring a piece of that back we hope to become a model that others can look to that is community driven, inclusive, multi faceted and financially viable. The certified kitchen we are hoping to fund will allow us to safely prepare food into products that consumers currently eat. We plan to prepare food that can be purchased by our neighbors, consumers at the farmers market, schools, restaurants, food pantries and retail markets. We will also be expanding the opportunities on our farm to beginning farmers and local food entrepreneurs who need a small business incubator. We are thankful for the support that each of you have given us over the last couple of years and thought of you first as lenders to our project.

We have just recently purchased a 20 acre farm just outside of Bowling Green in Halfway. Sitting on the farm is a home built in the 1830′s with a facility already plumbed for a certified kitchen. This has presented an opportunity for our family that we are very much looking forward to. We cannot wait to open up our home to folks across the state to learn about the history of Kentucky family farms. We will be looking to each of you for support and encouragement along the way.

Kiva has asked me to send out a request to those who know us best and would be interested in supporting us financially through a loan of any dollar amount they feel comfortable with starting at just $5. If we receive 30 loans in the next couple of days Kiva has offered to loan us an additional $500. Our loan will remain ‘private” until we are funded by at least 15 lenders. Cooling system problems are the most common reason for mechanical failure in Bowling Green. And, they’re largely avoidable. Here’s what Bowling Green car owners need to know about their cooling system. First, the terms coolant and antifreeze are pretty much used interchangeably in KY. The fluid cools your engine while it’s running and it keeps it from freezing when it’s cold.

Your cooling system is filled with a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze/coolant. So if you’re topping off antifreeze/coolant, it is important to add the proper amount of each. Distilled water is much better than tap water. Now you can buy pre-mixed coolant so make sure you know what you’re putting in.

Two more cautions for Bowling Green car owners: first, never add coolant when the engine is hot. This can lead to serious burns. Second, there are many antifreeze formulas. Your manufacturer recommends a specific type that won’t harm your cooling system components. Use the wrong fluid and you could void your cooling system warranty. All car makers have schedules for when you should change your coolant. It’s important to follow the schedule, because neglecting your cooling system allows the fluid to become corrosive. Beginnings:
Rough Draft Farmstead began as the dream of two people–owners Jesse and Hannah–who decided that they wanted to live more simply. Jesse found a passion for naturally-produced wines in New York that led him back to Kentucky where he interned at Bugtussle Farms and met Hannah, a self-proclaimed “nomadic city girl” who decided to come back to her Kentucky roots to pursue her passion for food. Here at Bugtussle they fell in love with growing food and with the land and, of course, each other.

Fast forward two years later to now and Jesse and Hannah have their own farm, Rough Draft Farmstead, in Bugtussle, Kentucky where they continue to explore their passion for growing food and living simply.

Produce and Products:
Every Tuesday, Rough Draft Farmstead sets up shop at Community Farmer’s Market here in Bowling Green where they sell their produce and distribute [] to shareholders of their CSA. Currently, they’re selling summer vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, kale, summer squash, sweet potatoes, eggplant, lettuce and broccoli, but they also have occasional special items like honey and gorgeous flowers!

We’re getting to know the Owners, Managers and Artisans of some of our great partners. Today we speak with Gina Graham, Owner of Creative Interiors:

1. Tell us a little about you as a person. Where are you from, what are your hobbies and where did you start your career that led to starting Creative Interiors?

Well, where do I start? I guess from the beginning. I am from a small town in Illinois. It’s about 45 minutes west of Chicago. It was a great place to grow up because you could walk to school, family, friends and shopping at the “Ben Franklin” drug store. I moved here in 1980 and finished high school at Warren Central, class of 1984.. WHOO!! Love the 80’s! I went to school for Business Administration. I worked at Desa International in the Purchasing Department for 7 years. I loved my job. I learned a lot about international purchasing, marketing, sales and negotiation. I had a lot of great leaders that helped me learn and grow. The skills that I attained from Desa have given me the knowledge, experience and confidence to operate CI. CI is a family owned business. I married my husband, Tim Graham, in 1989. We will be married 25 years this memorial weekend.. (Another WHOO!) My mother in-law, Rhonda Harrod started Creative Interiors in 1986. I came along a few years later. She was so patient with me at the beginning. I tried to sew but it’s a gift that I just don’t have. I would come in with Band-Aids on my fingers every morning because I would sit at the sewing machine and the needle would run over my fingers. I did cut out window treatments and I learned how to quilt with the long-arm quilt machine. This helped give the working knowledge of how everything is put together. This is when I learned that not everyone can picture how things will look. I just thought everyone could envision the completed product or a finished decorated room. Wow!! There’s my gift. I finally found it. J The next step was buying fabrics. Well, that’s just like Christmas for me. I didn’t know I liked fabric so much until I could see so many ways you can put it together. The different patterns, (Large & small) colors, shades and then there is Texture, smooth, silks, velvets etc. The choices are really endless which makes it so fun.

Also – a little about Gina as a person –

My life revolves around God, family, dogs and work. Not sure if family should be first or dogs? Depends on what day it is? Lol After Desa, I stayed home with my 2 children because I thought it was the right thing to do. Well, I’m not the type to stay home with the children. Again, not a gift I have but it was worth a shot. I did learn that I like to organize and make things happen. I taught Sunday school for 5 years. Middle school and High School. It was great to guide young hearts and minds. What a blessing. I also learned that I can lead. Me a leader? Who would have thought? I never thought of myself as a teacher but here I was teaching Sunday school. Also, I was never a cheerleader but my daughter was and they needed a coach, so guess what? Yep, I became a Cheer coach. I had some very quick training and life experience but I wouldn’t trade that time with my daughter for anything in the world.

Back to me as a person…. I love to read, watch funny movies. Spend time with family and friends. I hate cooking but I love to clean and organize. I love music, old and 80’s. Not much of the new stuff. I love chocolate in any form except ice cream. I will not eat chocolate ice cream because I got sick on it when I was a child. I think the cup is 1⁄2 full all the time. I am optimistic, encourager and I love to help others.

2. What is your earliest memory of work, what got you interested in it?

I’ve been working in the custom window covering business since I was 22 years old. My earliest memory would be helping family decorate with color or fabrics. I would rearrange and rearrange just to see how different I could make it. I don’t want to have the same as everyone else. I wanted to be unique. What got me interested is Fabric. When I went to my first fabric manufacturer, I was hooked. What a cool process and the choices are endless. In one area they would have upholstery to silks all in a rainbow of colors. My mind just exploded with the possibilities.

3. What is the favorite thing we sell?

Fabric !!! Fabric !! Fabric !!! My favorite color use to be green. I really don’t think I have one anymore. I love pattern, textures, bold color, and soft colors. The only color I really don’t like is yellow. I’ve never had yellow in my home. Reminds me of “Big Bird”. Lol

4. Who are your influences in life and your work?

I am a member of WCAA. (Window Covering Association of America) I learn a lot from all the other decorators across the United States. I love to get their perspective on fabrication and decorating.

5. If you had to choose a last meal, what would you eat?

Salmon from Longhorn and my grandmother’s banana cake with cream cheese frosting.

6. How important is local business collaboration to you?

Very important. Local business will keep our town down to earth. BG is known for being friendly and personable. I love the small town feel and I hope we don’t lose it. It’s what really sets us apart from others.

7. What event in Bowling Green (or Charity) are you involved with?

St. Jude’s Children’s Home – this year is $1,000 from creative interiors

8. What do you see for the future of your business in Bowling Green and serving South Central Kentucky?

Continued Growth. In our industry we are ever changing. Nothing stays the same for very long. In our profession we must continue to be prepared for all those changes.

9. What other locally owned businesses in town do you enjoy shopping, eating or patronizing?

A new one for me is the Resurrection Shop!! Lu Lu’s is great!! Heart Strings. Sun Suites Salon & Spa I wish I could visit monthly for facials. Eating? The Bistro… Rafferty’s When possible, I love a good comedy play with my girlfriends.

Have you ever looked at a home design magazine and wonder how they paired so many patterns together and it look so good? One thing that can give a truly custom look when it comes to decorating your home is mixing patterns that compliment each other. By stepping outside of your comfort zone, and getting creative with pattern you can get a space that is not just put together but also dynamic!

Mixing patterns seems to be the most common intimidation I hear from clients. Don’t shy away from mixing pattern out of fear! Creative Interiors is here to help! Start by getting your feet wet; come in and shop some of our new fabrics with confidence!

I will share a few rules to get you started. When grouping fabrics and different patterns, there may not be a magic number, but odd numbers rule. Whether you are arranging your accessories on a bookshelf, pillow placement, or even planting shrubs, odd numbered objects are more esthetically pleasing to the eye. The same rule applies when mixing patterns. Three is a good place to start… you can always go up from there, but remember to keep it odd.

Start by picking a pattern you love! Your first fabric is what I like to call your inspiration piece. Your inspiration piece is usually your strongest pattern. It can be a floral, geometric, damask… as long as you love it! Your inspiration piece is what you are going to build your other pieces off of. It works well if your inspiration pattern is a large scale pattern.

Once you have picked your dominant pattern, you can set out to find two complimentary patterns. Your next pattern should be smaller in scale – somewhere around half the scale of your largest pattern. This piece should have a few of the same colors as your inspiration piece.

For your third, you want to choose a complimentary neutral or textured piece in a small scale. If adding a third pattern is way more than you can handle you can stick with a complimentary solid, but make it an interesting texture such as velvet, ruffle, corduroy or burlap. By adding an interesting texture, it gives the visual illusion of pattern, but only in movement, instead of print.

To keep harmony amongst your patterns keep a unifying color throughout to tie it all together. You want to stay within the same hues and intensities of color within each pattern. You can add pattern in your rugs, window treatments, upholstery or pillows, even throw blankets and artwork. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and let your personality shine!

Place your patterns in a smart way. You don’t want more than two large competing patterns. Remember, your eye needs a place to rest. Some patterns that work well together would be a floral, stripe and small polka-dot; chevron/geometric, small floral and a solid; or plaid, graphics and solids. Don’t be afraid! Pattern can add so much personality to a space!
