We’re getting to know the Owners, Managers and Artisans of some of our great partners. Today we speak with Doug Gorman, President, of Booth Fire and Safety:

1. Tell us a little about you as a person. Where are you from, what are your hobbies and where did you start your career that led to operating Booth Fire and Safety?

My Father was in Manufacturing management so we moved with promotions quite a bit. I was born in Muskegon Michigan and moved to Severna Park MD when I was 5. My Father was transferred to Hopkinsville KY for Ebonite Bowling Balls when I was 13. No culture shock there…….. I attended WKU to play Soccer and played for 4 years graduating in 1986. I immediately went into sales. I spent 7 years with Motorola before meeting B.J. Booth, the founder of Booth Fire and Safety. In 1995, he offered a position of General Manager and in 1999 I purchased the company.

2. What is your earliest memory of your work, what got you interested in it?

The first year at Booth was a struggle and a steep learning curve. I remember vividly selling a CO2 fire suppression system to a factory. The sale was one of the biggest the company had ever had. 6 months later the factory had a fire and the system extinguished the fire. Needless to say , the customer has been extremely loyal to us. That desire to save lives and property and help solve problems has kept me motivated.

3. What is your favorite thing you sale?

Our main product is Fire Extinguishers. We sell thousands per year, but I always think this one simple item can save a life and we never take that for granted.

4. Who are your influences in life and your work?

My Father instilled a work ethic in me that I appreciate greatly. I think some great customer service skills were learned from my Mother. I’ve got 5 brothers and 2 sisters and that in itself taught teamwork, perseverance, consequences for actions and support and love.

5. If you had to choose a last meal, what would you eat?

My last meal would probably be 2 hamburgers and a bowl of chili from Ferrell’s hamburgers in Hopkinsville.

6. How important is local business collaboration to you?

I think one of the greatest things about this town is the business community and how involved many of them are with each other. I appreciate collaborating with various businesses to help improve my business. We’ve been blessed to have earned the clientele that we have and we are always going out of our way to work with them in any way that would be mutually beneficial.

7. What event in Bowling Green (or Charity) are you involved with?

I’ve been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Bowling Green for over 20 years. Each year we organize the BB & T All American Soap box derby as well as the Citizens First Thunderfest celebration of Independence Day. 100% of our donations go to fund children’s charities.

8. What do you see for the future of your business in Bowling Green and serving South Central Kentucky?

We’re exttemely optimistic about the future of our business. Bowling Green continues to grow and that is good for everyone’s business. There will be extreme challenges to stay in business from health care for employees to a skilled work force. One thing about Bowling Green, small business has always been the backbone of our community and will continue to be into the future.

9. What other locally owned businesses in town do you enjoy shopping, eating or patronizing?

As for dining out, we love Mariah’s, Rafferty’s, Double Dogs, Montana Grille, 440 Main and Cambridge Market. We also love Brickyard Café and Mellow Mushroom. I think you can tell the biggest difference when you go to a locally owned restaurant and what you get for your dollar. We have truly enjoyed going to Home Café as well. Any time you see young entrepreneurs risking their livelihood with the American dream, I think you should support them.

You’re planning for the biggest day of your life, your wedding. Have you planned like the celebrities? You’ve got to love to see a beautiful smile looking back at you on that special day. Every celebrity knows during the red carpet premieres that a bright smile makes a big difference. Many of those celebrities featured used the ‘Zoom Whitening Technique.’ So, we went to Destiny Dental to find out about the technique since so many of you want that “Award Show Smile” on your wedding day or upcoming big event.

What is it?

A 45-minute teeth-whitening treatment administered by Destiny Dental. The treatment uses a light-activated bleach which can whiten teeth by up to eight shades. Moulds are also made for home whitening allowing you to top up the gleam factor in the comfort of your own home!

What’s the process?

Rubber moulds are made of your dental profile before a consultation takes place. After you’ve decided on which shade works best with the aid of some nifty color matching, you and your soon-to-be-new head turning smile are placed in a chair before lasers get to work on your pearly whites.

As the bleach in the whitening gel can burn gums and damage the skin inside the mouth, a protective gel is administered to prevent burning around the teeth before the whitening gel is painted onto the tooth enamel. New whitening gel is applied every 15 minutes helping to break up stains and whiten teeth.

Sounds a bit surgical?

The teeth-whitening gel is packed with Hydrogen Peroxide which is triggered into activity using a special light. The bleach and light used as a combination speeds up the breakdown of stains and discolouration on the tooth enamel. As the whole thing is administered by a dental surgeon the risks are minimised.

What are the benefits?

A brighter, whiter smile. As teeth can be lightened by up to eight shades in just 45 minutes, the results do have something of a wow factor about them.

How long does it take?

Including an inspection and consultation my Zoom teeth whitening takes about an hour.

There are a lot of things we think about when we decide to shop online for anything, more so for cigars, as there are a number of problems you most likely will encounter. We live in an area that has the one of the best Cigar shops in Kentucky and it’s almost unneeded to shop online for cigars. Sure we check out several of the online cigar sites for reviews and upcoming cigars from all the favorite brands. A lot of time, the sites just copy and paste the information from the cigar companies websites, but a few have real reviews from real cigar smokers.

All this said, no source on the internet is as good as Chris or Andrew who work in the industry daily. A personal opinion suited for what you are looking for. This, and a chance to feel and smell the product before you and then carry it out with you. This isn’t like buying a dishpan online. This is a product where professional advice and personal preference is best helped in person.

A converted area that is a place for worship on Sundays, will be giving a helping hand to the kids and charities of the community this weekend with Lil’ Angels Attic. Parents and kids in Bowling Green have a unique way of stocking up on clothes toys and other needed items, through the event hosted by Broadway United Methodist. Lil’ Angels Attic at Broadway United Methodist has been a great helping hand to the families of Bowling Green as well as the charities. Lil’ Angels Attic is a biannual children’s consignment sale raising funds for local children and family charities. Previous charity recipients include The Family Enrichment Center, New Beginnings Therapeutic Riding, CASA, Pregnancy Support Center, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters, just to name a few.

Thousands of items will be on sale like Girls clothing (infant to size 20), Boys clothing (infant to size 20), Maternity Clothing, Toys, Books, Children’s furniture, Games, Movies, Video Games, Nursery Items, Swings and So Much More. The big event starts this Friday at 9am-7pm and Saturday 8am-12pm.

Since it’s inception in 2002, they have donated over $600,000 in cash and merchandise to various organizations. They also pick one charity each sale to be their Heaven Cent charity, which donations are made specifically by asking each shopper as they check out to donate a dollar.
