Uštipci from the Balkan regions to your home. From the family of Sanda Crnkic Mandrapa.

When we started asking for recipes obviously we had to ask Sanda for one of her family’s favorite dishes. That’s how we got the delicious recipe for Uštipci (Perfect for breakfast with meats and cheeses. Uštipci are doughnut-like fried dough balls popular in Southeast European countries, namely Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Albania. In this case, Sanda’s family is from Prijedor a town in the North of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The great thing about when we asked for the recipe Sanda was already in the process of getting the recipe from her family for her child’s school project. Love the fact we are remembering where we came from through food. Want to try Uštipci? Follow these simple instructions:

Ingredients for Recipe:

200ml warm Milk, 100ml warm water, 5g of dry yeast, 1 tbs sugar, 1 tbs salt, 600g all-purpose flour, and 3 eggs.

Steps to make:

  1. Warm milk add sugar and yeast and let it sit for 10 minutes to activate.
  2. 600g of flour add the mixture from step 1, eggs, water, and salt. Mix well with a wooden spoon. Let it sit covered at room temp for 30-45 minutes to rise.
  3. After it rises mix it again with a wooden spoon.
  4. In a deep frying pan heat up 4 cups of oil to medium-high. Use a large spoon and spoon out dough into the frying pan. Fry until golden brown on all sides. Place on a paper towel when done.
  5. Serve Hot with your favorite spread or dip. (Suggestion: Use sour cream *Sanda’s family choice*, Cream Cheese or Nutella)
