Think Little CSA: The Struggles and Joy of Farming.

It’s been one hell of a season–already–that is for sure. The record rainfall has been detrimental to the point of oppression in the field: working conditions are poor, blight is spreading like wildfire, and the plants themselves are almost standing in water on a weekly basis. Not to mention how many vehicles I’ve gotten stuck in the mud, needing to be pulled out with the tractor. Then there was the pop-up thunderstorm that came out of nowhere and flattened two rows of tomatoes, breaking the stakes off at the ground.

Without hesitation, Nathan and Michelle righted the stakes and drove them back into the ground. Through it all, I could hear them laughing from across the field. Somewhere in that moment I was reminded of what it is to be a farmer and I felt relief for the first time in weeks. It could be worse, too. The crop loss will undoubtedly escalate, but we feel there should be enough for all of the CSA members. It’s one of the best parts of being in a CSA, as members you get the best the farm has to offer. Understand there may be some not-so-pretty vegetables in the coming weeks, but it’s nothing we wouldn’t take home ourselves. Tomorrow, you’ll be taking home: squash, zucchini, cucumber, eggplant, peppers, heirloom tomatoes, cantaloupe, and assorted herbs.

Stay Dry,
