Help support local Farmers! ‪#‎buylocalbg‬ ‪#‎bowlinggreen‬ ‪#‎kentucky‬ https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/a-think-little-tractor Here is this week’s update from their CSA:
Year-round farming can be relentless. There is really no sense of closure, only beginning again and again and again. Not only are we growing vegetables throughout the winter season-one of the worst on record-but also constantly shifting our attention between planning, executing, evaluating, repeat, twelve months of the year. It is, however, necessary for some farmers to grow year-round in order to sustain the growing dedication to local food by consumers and not without great personal reward. Hopefully, more farmers will choose to farm year-round. We simply need more small-scale farms, everywhere, all the time.

The last week, though, has been centered around some important new beginnings for Think Little. Over 5,000 Spring plants are in the ground! It’s been all-hands-on-deck at Hickory Lane Farm, including some neighbors, but-God willing-there will be onions, leeks, romain, radicchio, spinach, kale, chard, collard, bok choi, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower, and peas (not including all of the root vegetables that will be direct seeded in the coming weeks). We’ll also be personally in charge of growing eight varieties of herbs throughout the Summer for a constant fresh supply and drying them to have through the Winter/Spring months for Think Little, Hickory Lane, and Farm Fresh.

That said, we’re still be heavily relying on produce from the high-tunnels and what we have in storage. It may be that we supplement the share for the next month and a half with other items from Hickory Lane (maybe some of those delicious dried tomatoes) or other local farms to get us all through. In the meantime, next Tuesday you’ll be getting: collards, chard, greens mix (yet to be decided), squash, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic.

Think Little also launched a crowd-funding campaign for our very own tractor! I’ll be posting on our blog within the next day or two how we feel about the process, because it’s both exhilarating and terrifying, but we’re confident it was the right choice for us in this moment. It is, quite simply, the single most important tool we need to begin expanding our farm business enough to save for land of our own. With that growth comes the greater effect of our efforts to increase food-access. To read (or share, please share) the full story, click on the picture above or the link below.
