This is the new feature from Classic Cuts and Shaves. The Barber culture is about individuality. Not just looking cookie cutter like those chair salons. Everyone has their own distinct looks but some of Bowling Greens famous, infamous and average Joe have great facial hair or even a lack thereof. Last week we featured John Carpenter, this week our 23rd President.
Some of you are saying, “President Harrison was from Ohio.” We’d say, of course but, he also spent time in Bowling Green when the Union occupied Bowling Green and he was a Colonel. In fact by the water tower on top of Hospital Hill there is a marker for Colonel Harrison. From the tourism site:
Fort C.F. Smith was located south of town on College Hill, now know as Reservoir Hill. Still visible are some of the earthworks constructed under the command of Colonel Benjamin Harrison, who later became President. This was the largest and and most elaborate fort in the Bowling Green defensive system. It was described as a “bastion fort” and was designed to mount up to 25 cannon. A historical marker is
located at the corner of Main and Park Streets, and a wayside exhibit is located to the right of the picnic pavilion at Fort C.F. Smith.
Let’s take a look at what he looked like during his time in Bowling Green:
This was his college look, Pre-time in Bowling Green.
As the war started he had grown that tiny beard into this beautiful look.
Artist rendering after promotion (post-BG days).
This was a serious beard with a low hang but nice trim. Not too much cheek growth.
Actually from his campaign, a ribbon we found in Bowling Green!
His later years he went with what today we see as a classic look. Gone is the long beard, sadly. Still, the white and tight beard and mustache is classic.
