One of the biggest celebrities to come from Bowling Green is without a doubt John Carpenter. When I moved to this great city the first thing I was told about was this being his hometown and how I needed to re-watch the 1978 classic, ‘Halloween.’ I did and it was even better after living in this town.
As Andrew Robinson mentioned in Friday’s Daily News:
Bowling Green Mayor Joe Denning, City Commissioner Melinda Hill and Bowling Green Police Department Chief Doug Hawkins honored Carpenter on Thursday in several ways.
First, Carpenter was named an honorary chief deputy in the BGPD for his work with the Haunted Asylum, a haunted house sponsored by Cancer Cops, the department’s Relay for Life team. Carpenter visited the haunted house last week.
Secondly, Denning gave Carpenter a key to the city and declared Oct. 31, 2011, to be “John Carpenter Day” in Bowling Green.
“These are keys that we do not just hand out on a daily basis,” Denning said. “We give these keys to individuals who have made a great impact on our city.”
So we hope everyone celebrates Halloween but we also want everyone to celebrate John Carpenter day! You can do so with a visit to another icon of Bowling Green, Fountain Square. Scare on the Square launches tonight with trick or treating at Fountain Square businesses from 4 to 5:30 pm. Culture of Creatures band will play from 4:30 to 5:30, and there will be horse and carriage rides around the park.
Then at 5:30, the Fountain Square Squirrels (ceramic variety) will find a permanent home. They will be auctioned off at 5:30 pm in front of the Capitol Arts Theater. If you have a favorite, come and bid to take one home! Have a Happy John Carpenter Day.
