Hold on to Your Wigs: ‘An Ounce of Pretension is Worth a Pound of Manure’ and Other Lovely Lines Await You

Scattered storms have returned to the forecast for this afternoon and into this evening. The weekend brings along some drier weather – there are still chances for rain – but the activity picks up again Sunday and into Monday. [WxOrNot YouTube]

How you gonna do an entire story on this new KSP thing and not call it a skid steer? Kentucky State Police has added a specialized “Rook” armored vehicle to its fleet. It’s a fancy skid steer. The Rook is a versatile tactical vehicle designed to protect officers in complex law enforcement operations, including hostage situations, barricaded subjects, riot response and natural disaster scenarios. The WKU School of Teacher Education recently gifted its first scholarships through the Forsythe Scholars Endowment. The scholarship fund was established in December of 2024 after a $1 million was given to the university from Charlotte Forsythe and Jerry Fandetti to support students pursuing a teacher education degree. The endowment can be used by graduate and undergraduate students for assistance outside the classroom, such as attending a professional conference or purchasing school supplies for student teaching. It looks like almost no one showed up to vote in Warren County this primary election. Voter turnout varied widely across Kentucky in the May 19 primary election, with participation highest in several small, rural counties and lowest in a number of larger-population counties, according to county-level totals of ballots cast compared with April voter registration figures. Imagine paying for a newspaper subscription (why would you in 2026? come on. we’re saying this as people who love the paper.) and this is the material you’re presented. A story about an “influencer” who takes pictures of Halloween things in Kentucky with lots of Gen Z-speak that doesn’t mean anything. Here’s a pro-tip, kids: the number of social media followers you have means absolutely nothing. Write that down. [Courier-Journal]

A deadly tick-borne disease is actively affecting domestic cats in Kentucky. Bobcat fever, also known as Cytauxzoonosis, is transmitted through a single tick bite and can progress quickly, according to veterinarian Adrienne Price Williams. No word on whether this impacts shady politicians and sneaky bureaucrats. [WAVE3]

Social media companies including Meta have settled the first of many lawsuits brought by hundreds of school districts seeking compensation for costs they say they incurred dealing with harms to children’s mental health from social media addiction. The skinny: Breathitt County, deep in the foothills of Appalachian Eastern Kentucky. Since everything in Kentucky like this is subject to our open records laws, we’ll soon know how many millions the district will receive. [NBC News]

Do we really need an in-depth look at why Daniel Cameron has lost twice? Could it be because he’s black and was running statewide in Kentucky? And maybe that whole situation with the Breonna Taylor slaughter in Louisville where he got caught misleading a grand jury? It has nothing to do with the ailing McConnell machine and everything to do with reality. It’s neither partisan nor political. An entire deep-dive that doesn’t mention his race or the reality that a majority of Kentucky Democrats, even, still admit to voting on the basis of race is unbelievable. [Herald-Leader]

Are you 18 or younger or do you have or care for kids who are? The Kentucky Department of Education operates the Summer Food Service Program that allows them access to meals during summer break. There are more than 2,000 locations statewide. You can call the USDA Hunger Hotline at (866) 348-6479 or visit this link. [Summer Meals Finder]

It’d be really cool if the local TV station folks could learn that there is no journalistic integrity in copying and pasting a press release. It’s stenography and it is literally taxpayer-funded propaganda. Regardless of political bent. Andy Beshear says the Commonwealth has now reached four straight years of declines in overdose deaths. And that’s true… if you underreport, hide, recategorize, focus on comorbidity. There are more meth abusers than ever before and pill snorters are causing the collapse of Eastern Kentucky. Our cities are struggling under the increasing wait of drug-driven homelessness – it’s happening right here in our own backyard if you open your eyes to see it. [WNKY & Press Release]

This probably impacts someone you know or care about locally, so it’s important that you pay attention to what’s occurring. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Friday that foreigners in the U.S. who want a green card will need to leave and apply in their home country, barring some unspecified exceptions. The announcement, which potentially affects hundreds of thousands of green card applicants a year, was the latest immigration policy unveiled by Trump’s Republican administration to stun and confound lawyers, advocates and immigrants. Kentucky’s unemployment rate fell in 66 counties between April 2025 and April 2026, which means little, and rose in 41 other counties. 13 counties saw no change at all. Remember that these numbers don’t include the thousands who exhaust their low unemployment benefits. Let’s start with the lowest: Woodford 3.1%; Fayette, Scott, Todd 3.3%; Jessamine 3.4%; Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Cumberland, Franklin, Graves, Kenton, Oldham 3.5%. Highest: Martin 7.8%; Lewis 7.6%; Wolfe 7.4%; Magoffin 7.2%; Pike 7%; Jackson 6.6%; Elliott 6.4%; Lawrence 6.3%; Wayne 6.2%; Carter 6%. [Press Release]

Just a reminder that gasoline price gouging carries hefty penalties. If you operate gas stations in the area and are playing with people, you may want to read the governor’s latest executive order. And if you’re just an everyday person who spots actual price gouging (not just high prices,) then you should also take a look. [Executive Order PDF]

Duncan Hines Days kickoff this Sunday downtown! The fun runs through June 6th. There are a bazillion things to do and we can’t list them all. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t command you to attend the free screening of Steel Magnolias on Monday. If you can’t say anything nice about anybody, you can come sit by us. [Duncan Hines Days]
