Welcome to the Meemaw Gossip Emporium & Storm Preparedness Center

This is not a drill: the weather is calming down for a little bit. Sure, it’s gonna feel hotter than blue blazes on Sunday but it’ll be calmer than the past couple weeks. Maybe a little storm potential but not the rollercoaster we’ve been on. Next week’s a different story but we’ll still take it. [WXorNot & YouTube]

More like this, please! Let’s keep Kentucky’s gems intact like this and ensure they exist to help drive our economy and our future. A bill that could expand Mammoth Cave National Park advanced Wednesday as federal lawmakers heard testimony on the proposal’s potential impact across south-central Kentucky. The proposal, filed alongside U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, would allow the more than 52,000-acre park to acquire an additional 551.14 acres in Edmonson and Barren counties from The Nature Conservancy. You’re a busy gal who works hard all week showing your boss how to open PDFs and click links. So snap those Lee Press-Ons off, shake out that wig and check out what’s happening this weekend. Some highlights: You can ride a trolley around town for 90 minutes and it’s way more fun than you’re thinking, check out Scarefest Weekend Presents Vette City Con 10, learn about serial killers at Bluegrass Vineyard, hunt Easter Eggs at Anthem Hill Church or attend a free show at the Hardin Planetarium on Sunday afternoon. Just in case anyone needs a reminder about how the current governor won his first bid for the office. It’s because of this… person… was his opponent. Imagine how messed up you have to be to abandon your adopted child in a foreign country. Do you think you’d get away with it like Matt Bevin has? [Kentucky Lantern & FOX56]

Hoo boy, we were right, it’s turning into a bit of a scandal. This is the hot gossip in all the meemaw phone circles this week. Former Warren County Sheriff’s Office deputy Mark Heyungs, now running in the Republican primary election against current Sheriff Brett Hightower, has formally appealed his termination from the agency. Law students and community members gathered in Chandler Hall to hear some words of wisdom from Kentucky justices Wednesday. Kentucky’s Supreme Court visited WKU as part of its on-the-road sessions around the state. While on the Hill, the justices heard oral arguments from real cases and spoke with students, faculty and community members. [WKU Herald]

You could get a grant up to $10,000 from state government via the Strengthen Kentucky Homes Program if you’re a homeowner fortifying your roof. Translation: If you’re getting a new roof, check this program out to see if you qualify and do what you need to do to make your home safer. It’s a no-brainer. [Press Release & SKH]

Kentucky may be 20 years behind the times, according to Mark Twain, but it’s always ahead of the curve when it comes to erring on the side of billionaires and squashing workers in a signature industry. We could win awards for that. In a major revision of U.S. labor law, a federal appeals court struck down a legal standard last week that would have required Louisville-based Brown-Forman to bargain with a union on behalf of workers at Woodford Reserve. [Herald-Leader]

Americans are probably happy to put memories of the COVID-19 pandemic behind them, but it may be worthwhile to stir up the past to see if they may qualify for an IRS refund. Any business or individual charged penalties or interest between Jan. 20, 2020, and July 10, 2023, may be eligible to ask for a refund, lawyers said. [USA Today]

Surely Kentuckians aren’t going to continue to pretend Frankfort politicians didn’t cause this. They created an environment where a college student was ashamed to be pregnant and had little recourse that didn’t involve punishment or the destruction of her life. [WKYT]

Should nuclear power plants play a role in Kentucky’s energy future? Or should Frankfort focus on things that have actually advanced in the rest of the world like renewables? Novel idea, since Kentucky is 20 years behind the times, but running your own solar, geothermal and reducing water consumption with gray systems should be at the front of your plans. Can’t afford whole home solar? Then a $200 panel and a nice backup battery. Start somewhere. [WDRB]

Severe weather can happen quickly in Kentucky. Tornadoes, strong storms, and flooding can affect anyone, no matter where you live. This guide was created to help every member of our community understand how to prepare, stay informed, and act safely when weather becomes dangerous. [BuyLocalBG]

Hear us out: Louisville should stop trying to catch up to Nashville and Cincinnasti. There’s simply no reason to try to be something you’re not and it would serve that city well to just embrace what it is for once. Bowling Green embraces its identity as an international community that’s deeply rooted in history, right? Doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. Tell your friends. [Courier-Journal]

You still not paying attention to what your local Board of Commissioners are doing in your name? What if they try to ban fancy clowns, candy throwing during parades or Coke Zero? They could be ruining your life or changing the world for the better and you’d never know if you don’t scratch the surface. Start with this March 17, 2026 meeting and just play it in the background if you need. Best case: It’s boring background noise. Worst case: Something fires you up and you make it your life’s mission to help change who holds elected office. [YouTube]
