We’re… Thawing? OH MY GOSH WE’RE THAWING!

Are you exhausted? Has the weather absolutely gutted your ability to function like a normal human? Well… we might thaw a bunch today! And then maybe get more precipitation and freeze again later in the weekend. Because we all haven’t fallen on our behinds enough the past 850,000 days in a row. (Send help.) [WXorNot & YouTube]

Bowling Green Community Defense hosted a meeting Saturday to unite community members in resistance against ICE enforcement actions. We know Bowling Green is strong, proud of being a large community of immigrants and everyone here should appreciate each other. We do right by your neighbors. So let’s keep things vibrant and embrace our differences. Imagine how boring life would be if you only interacted with people who think and behave 100% like you all of the time. [WBKO]

On that same note, not even in larger cities can you find so many disparate nationalities living so closely and happily together because people here embrace food, culture and our shared humanity. Be aware that between January 1 and October 15, 2025, ICE arrested some 2,000 people in Kentucky. That’s up from 1,686 arrests in 2024, so not a massive increase. [Courier-Journal]

Remember that massive data center in Franklin that we told you about last week? The Franklin Planning & Zoning Commission held another meeting to discuss the monstrosity and tabled everything. For a second time. [More WBKO]

Governor Andy Beshear stopped by the Chamber of Commerce to push for universal pre-k in Kentucky, a lofty and admirable goal. He’s been using it as a tool to campaign for higher office for several months. The only problem? There is no funding mechanism in place to support the lofty goal and the General Assembly in Frankfort shows no signs of being interested in making funding happen. [BG Daily News]

If you haven’t kept up with Kentucky’s abysmal record of children in foster care, it’s probably time to become more aware. Not only are kids stuck in the hands of mis-managed agencies across the state and dealing with overworked and underpaid social workers. Some are now reeling from the loss of their specialized education programs. The Dessie Scott School in Pine Ridge, Wolfe County, was destroyed by fire on Thursday. This impacts us here. Are you coming to the cottage? In 20-degree weather, away from the heat and comfort, everyone at the SOKY Center watched players from across North America fight for victory in a Bowling Green ice hockey event. [WKU Herald]

The case rocked other media markets in the state for a decade but it was barely a blip on the radar here. Brooks Houck, the Bardstown man tried and convicted in Bowling Green of killing Crystal Rogers, has finally been moved to the Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County. [WDRB]

Have you checked in to see what went down during the February 3 Board of Commissioners meeting? If not, here’s your chance. Turn it on in the background and listen while you work. Make this a regular habit if you care about your community. [YouTube]

If you hear tornado sirens throughout Bowling Green and Warren County today, February 6, 2026, don’t stress. Warren County Emergency Management says it will be conducting a test on the Community Outdoor Warning Sirens. [WNKY]

The latest round of winter weather is behind us and hopefully for good. So now’s a good a time as any to get prepared for the future. Make a plan so we don’t lose 16 Kentuckians the next time something like this happens. And to really hammer home just how important it is to support your neighbors, nearly 900 people sheltered at warming centers last Wednesday alone. Know where yours is in case you ever need it.
