June 2015’s Pause For a Pose – Power Side Angle Pose from Hot Yoga Bowling Green!

And now, here it is: Your June 2015 ‘Pause for a Pose’The Power Side Angle Stretch (trikonasasna variation) This great power posture is capable of engaging every muscle group in the body and creating better flexibility and endurance. And it has excellent cardiovascular benefits as well! Begin in mountain pose with the feet together, standing straight & tall. Step one foot out laterally about 3 to 4.5 feet (depending upon your height) and lock feet tightly to the ground. Rotate one foot on the heel to bring it parallel to the back of your yoga mat while other foot rotates internally to 45 degrees. Lunge down into the lead knee (bending knee toward little toe) until lead thigh is parallel to the ground. Tilt upper body toward lead knee, placing corresponding elbow in front of that knee. Lift opposite arm up and then over the shoulder & side of the head, stretching that arm in the direction of lead leg. Lift all muscles into the center of the body, breathe and flex. Press lower arm into the lead leg and resist one against the other. Advancement: Press lower hand into the mat for deep stretch. Modification: Rest lower arm on the thigh of the lead leg while flexing. Hold and breathe for 5 to 10 smooth breaths. Repeat the opposite side. Now, enjoy practicing this pose all month!
