From Community Farmers Market:

In an effort to make fresh local food more affordable for low-income families, Community Farmers Market was the first in the state of Kentucky to implement a Double Dollar program in which WIC farmers market vouchers, Senior Nutrition farmers market vouchers, and SNAP benefits (up to the first $20) are doubled each and every market day. Not only does it increase the purchasing power of those benefits, but also makes those benefits available to support our local farmers and farming economy. For more information on how to use these benefits at Community Farmers Market or how to contribute to the program, please contact us through the CONNECT/APPLY section of the website.

“As a farmer, I see the benefit of promoting program benefits like WIC, Senior Nutrition, and SNAP at farmers markets.  Not only does this ensure that those funds are building the local economy, but we see a benefit for our customers.  From opening day at Community Farmers Market we saw a need to implement these programs and make them accessible to our customers.  The Double Dollar program helps us overcome price differences and the convenience of processed foods.”
~ Nathan Howell, Farmer

“My family benefits from the double dollars program at CFM because we try to buy fresh produce whenever available from the grocery… because the produce is not local and travels hundreds of miles, it spoils quicker than we can eat it. This, in turn, causes our benefits to just go down the drain. I want my family to eat healthy and I want to know what is actually going in my children’s mouths. Buying locally at a lower price is a HUGE help to my family.”

“Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (http://www.kftc.org/) is a grassroots, social justice organization that is excited to support the Community Farmers Market in their efforts to make local food more accessible to all people. Accepting WIC and Senior vouchers as well as SNAP will not only provide better nutrition to lower income families, but put more income directly into the hands of the farmers of our community.”
