Think Little CSA’s Week 17: Inspiration

Last week, we attended a Market Gardener workshop given by Jean-Martin Fortier. He, along with his wife and two others, grows enough vegetables for 200 CSA shares about the size of ours on less than two acres with very little investment (grow better, not bigger). One of the main issues beginning farmers face is capital for land and equipment, but what he has done effectively leveled the playing field. Some of his practices hold a lot of promise for our family one day owning a farm, though it may be small, really small (Think Little, right?). Everything seems so much more within reach. More so, though, what are the implications for food access? Where do we go from here?

The workshop and the effect it has had on our thinking about farming has caused me to reflect on how other farmers continue to inspire us to do better. Hannah and Jesse of Roughdraft who–from afar–convinced us to pursue our dream of farming against all odds and to constantly test our ideals; Michelle, for reminding us to ask ourselves how we can be of service to those with less and being open, honest, and real; and Nathan, who speaks volumes by simply doing.

So, beginning in July, we’ll be donating five additional CSA shares to HOTEL INC to give to five families over the course of three months. The shares will be delivered to HOTEL INC on Tuesday morning, just before normal pick-up hours. These families will also receive some nutritional education to help them better utilize the produce they receive. However, we would appreciate your help. For those of you who are able, please consider contributing to cover the cost of the shares. We recommend five dollars a week over the course of the three months, but any amount would suffice. Take some time to think about it and let us know if you’re interested in helping us with this project. Given it goes well, we will be building the cost of these additional shares into the CSA membership come October. Your membership, should you choose to renew it, would then be directly contributing to the increase of fresh food access in our community. Think Toms (the shoes), but with fresh produce instead. How awesome is that?

For week 17, you’ll be getting: Brussels sprouts w/ greens (trust us on this one), kale, salad mix, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic.

Take Care,
Jackson, Jordan, & Avery Rolett
