This past month Community Farmers Market Bowling Green had visiting vendors from Alaska (also based in Stanford, KY) to Florida (Also based in Southern Kentucky). This was a great time to share with local farmers from other regions and how they have bettered their community. Now, we turn our attention to some of the vendors who provide local options week in and week out through the year. This week we look at Sunny Point Gardens. People that attend the market rave about Sunny Point, “We have really enjoyed the produce that we have gotten at Sunny Point Gardens so far. The onions, radishes, and lettuce have a different taste that is wonderful. I am sure that it is because no chemicals and pesticides are used in any way to raise the produce. The produce is also the cleanest you will find. Their produce requires less cleaning and that is a time saver. We can’t wait until other produce is available. You will also enjoy getting to know the owners of Sunny Point Gardens. They are a great family.” said Cindy Whittle Manley. Here is the Sunny Point Gardens story as told by Sunny Point:

Our Story
Saundra  and I have always had an  interest in horticulture and for the last 35 years of owning and operating our photography business, gardening has been our hobby.
During our marriage of more than 40 years we have always done our own landscaping and gardening.  We both were exposed to vegetable gardening by our parents and grandparents and at an early age we grew to appreciate farming and the taste of home grown fresh vegetables. As we became more aware and concerned about the importance of healthy vegetables for our family we decided to start the practice of pesticide free organically growing our own produce.

In the winter of 2010 we decided to build our own greenhouse and start all our own vegetables plants.  It soon became obvious we could have a lot more vegetables than we could use ourselves. We thought surely others were concerned about healthy food for their family as well so we started  thinking about growing for others also. Knowing we were quit busy with our photography business we wondered how we could turn our hobby of gardening into another business. When we presented our thoughts to the rest of our family they all became excited about the idea of all of us working together to provide healthy farm fresh produce for our family and others. Without our family joining us in this venture it would not have been possible for us to proceed with our plan.

So in early 2011 our family consisting of our daughter Shauna, her husband Joey and their daughter Haleigh Tyndall and our daughter Lauren, her husband Josh and their son Seth Miller and along with Saundra and myself we formed “Sunny Point Gardens”.

Sunny Point Gardens is located at our home on our 14 acre farm, in northwest Edmonson County, Kentucky. We will be growing a variety of vegetables including hydroponic lettuce and salad greens plus blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cut flowers.

We hope you will share our excitement of Sunny Point Gardens providing “Farm Fresh Produce and Flowers  for Our Family and Yours”

“Update” – In September of 2011 we sold our small business (Alan Davis Photography) which we had owned for over 35 years.

We now are full time farmers at Sunny Point Gardens!

Our CSA
The CSA model is very important to our small family farm’s success. The membership fees we collect at the beginning of the season allow us to purchase essential supplies such as seed, organic fertilizers, and fuel to heat our greenhouses.  Memberships are available at a variety of dollar amounts, and this credit allows each customer to buy what they want, when they want it, throughout the season. CSA members will also have convenient pre-ordering privileges available through our website.
Hydroponics
In the fall of 2013 Sunny Point Gardens began construction of a hydroponic greenhouse to allow us to grow lettuces and other salad greens year round for our customers.  We are using a growing technique called “Controlled Environment Agriculture” using hydroponics.  This greenhouse is cooled in the summer and heated in the winter.  Supplemental lighting is also used during the shorter days of fall and winter.
