Think Little CSA’s Week 13 Update: The New Year

Welcome to 2015! We hope everyone had a Happy New Year. Ours was spent with our farm-ily at Hickory Lane; eating delicious food, staying up late, telling stories, playing games, and drinking spiced wine. In an effort to celebrate the new direction our life has taken, we went to listen to the bi-centennial bell ringing in downtown Scottsville, our new and former home. We missed it, but oh well, we were having a good time in the freezing cold darkness making sure the row cover was secure in the high-tunnels (no, really, it was actually quite fun).

Though we may not have been at the market these past two weeks, that doesn’t necessarily mean we took a break! Since we last checked in, we completed our application to accept SNAP benefits as a farm, began working on a project to get weekly CSA shares to HOTEL INC (more on that later), attended the Kentucky Fruit & Vegetable Conference, harvested the last of the crops from the field, and spent an uneasy night hoping the vegetables in the high-tunnel would survive the near zero degree temperature (they did, of course). Needless to say, it may be the dead of Winter, but there is still a lot going on around here.

The pace of harvesting has slowed tremendously: breaking through the ice around the high-tunnels, removing the row cover, being mindful of the temperature inside and out, taking more frequent breaks to get warm before your fingers fall off, covering everything back up after harvest, and repeat. Winter brings a whole new set of challenges. Even still, I love growing in this season.

Starting this week, you’ll be getting your e-newsletters before the weekend. It may be a little off at times regarding what’s in your weekly shares because something could happen between now and then (like zero degree temperatures), but those of you who do meal-planning may find it much more useful, especially those of you who also come to the market on Saturdays. Any last minute substitutions should be mostly in kind; a green with a green, a squash for a squash, etc. That being said, this week you’ll be getting: a bunch of Tokyo market turnips, mustard greens, tatsoi, kale/collards, Brussels sprouts, an acorn squash, and a head of garlic or an onion.

See you Tuesday!

Take Care,
Jackson, Jordan, & Avery Rolett
