We’re getting to know the Owners, Managers and Artisans of some of our great partners. Today we speak with Matt Pfefferkorn, The Man behind Mellow Matt’s Music & More:

 1. Tell us a little about you as a person. Where are you from, what are your hobbies and what inspired you to create Mellow Matt’s.

I grew up in South Carolina and moved to Bowling Green in 1980. Music has been a part of my life since I could remember.  My first concert as a child was Bo Diddley with my parents, I think I was around 6 years old.  Then at age 9 I begged them to take me to see Kiss, it worked.  I always had a love for records, my father is an avid collector.  I can remember raking leaves all weekend for enough money to go to Record Bar and buy an album or cassette.  I hung out enough at the record store in the mall that Jeff Sweeny either had to hire me or tell me to leave!  He hired me to help out with inventory at Record Bar and then I moved onto Christmas help and then was offered a job.  It was an opportunity that helped to mold my life.  All I have ever done is work in a record store or around them.  And after almost 30 years of working in these stores, my dream came true and I was able to open my own record store, Mellow Matt’s Music & More!

My inspiration for opening the store…  anyone that has a passion for music will understand, that when you do what you love, the only thing better is doing your own way with your own style.  I have such a respect for all the talent and music history in this community… I wanted to couple a music store that embraced and honored that, a place where musicians and artist could call home and so could all that supported them.

My Hobbies:  Music, going to see live music, biking, reading, cooking and spending time with my amazing and supportive family, wife Kimberly, and beautiful daughter Cassidy.

2. What is your favorite thing you sale?

RECORDS!

3. Who are your influences in life and your work?

My family, of course.  Their support through this journey has been incredible.  Jeff Sweeney has been a huge influence in my work and personal life and molded me for this business.  Also, I get a lot of inspiration from music!

4. If you had to choose a last meal, what would you eat (Just a fun question and doesn’t have to be local)?

The Melting Pot

5. How important is local business collaboration to you?

Essential.  One of the reasons for opening this store was to have the ability to partner with other local businesses and be part of a group of like minded people that support the community that we live in.

6. What event in Bowling Green (or Charity) are you involved with?

The Grateful Gathering.  This is an event that started with my love for the Grateful Dead and with the idea that they used to do benefit shows for various charities.  It started in 2010 and has been a benefit for The Son Rhea Foundation that repairs and buys instruments for schools in South Central Kentucky.

7. What do you see for the future of your business in Bowling Green and serving South Central Kentucky?

I want to continue to be a store that has success in supporting and helping the local music scene grow, while making our footprint as a true local record store.

8. What other locally owned businesses in town do you enjoy shopping, eating or patronizing?

Community farmer’s Market, Lost River Pizza, Wino’s, Spencer’s Coffee, Mariah’s, Geno’s and Griff’s Deli.
