One of the easiest ways to keep your vehicle safe — and to save money at the same time! — is to not neglect your brakes. Putting off brake repairs can be costly and dangerous. So what are some signs that your brakes need to be serviced?

  • Your vehicle pulls to one side during brakingThe usual cause of your vehicle pulling to one side or another is contamination on the braking surface or a malfunctioning caliper. It could also be caused by different tire sizes on the right and left wheels. Worn suspension components can also cause this symptom.
  • Squeaky brakesSome brake squeaks are caused by harmless brake dust, but frequent squeaking is the first indication that it is time to have your brakes serviced. A wear indicator is attached to the brake pad assembly, and as brake pads wear, the wear indicator will come into contact with the rotor and cause the squeaking noise. If left unattended the squeaking noise will eventually turn into a grinding sound.
  • Grinding noise while braking A grinding noise when you brake is an indication that you have a serious brake problem that needs immediate attention. This sound means that there is metal on metal contact and your brake pads have completely worn through. If left unattended, this could result in brake failure.
  • PulsatingA vibrating or pulsating brake pedal is a sign of warped rotors. Rotors tend to warp when put under extensive stress, such as making frequent stops when driving down a steep hill or towing. If this is the case, your brakes will most likely need to be replaced.
