Get To Know Valerie Parrish of Ribbon Rage at Beech Bend Farmers Market! Here is a brief Q&A we recently had with Valerie:

1. Tell us a little about you. Where are you from, what are your hobbies and where did you start your career that led to the business?
I reside on a farm in Butler Co along with my 11 year old son. I love learning and creating new projects, art, music, films, and traveling. My current career began around 10 years ago when people kept saying to me “I wish you sold hair bows”.  I said to myself, “hey, I can do that!”

2. What is your earliest memory of your work, what got you interested in it?

My earliest memory of getting started in this biz, would be the tears, hair pulling, and waste of product on my mistakes. I didn’t give up, and it paid off.  I can also thank my mother and great grandmother for their excellent crafting skills, that I might have stolen a few genes from.

3. What is your favorite thing you sell?
Right now I’m happiest making the tea towels because I can make them for any age or gender.

4. Who are your influences in life and your work?
I have to give a big thank you to my family, friends, and fellow market vendors. They are all just too awesome for words!

5. If you had to choose a last meal, what would you eat?
Ice-cream! Duh…

6. How important is local business collaboration to you?
Extremely. Our communities depend on local businesses and sales more than anyone realizes. Keeping dollars local helps everyone in the area.  Our health also depends on knowing what’s going into our foods.

7. What event in Bowling Green are you involved with?
Last year I organize an event for the orphan dogs at the Warren Co Humane Society.  We (vendors/customers) donated t-shirts and upcycled them into rope chews toys for Christmas presents for the dogs. . The response was overwhelming and emotionally moving, so we’ve decided to make it a yearly event.

8. What do you see for the future of your business in Bowling Green and serving South Central Kentucky?
My hopes are to eventually provide jobs for some local residents. If more people shopped local, there would be more jobs for our people. I also want to continue growing with the Beech Bend Farmer’s Market crew. They are a great bunch of hard working, like minded people.

9. What other locally owned businesses in town do you enjoy shopping, eating or patronizing?
The list is huge, but I’ll name a few of my favorites: Wild Bird and Nature Store, Container World, and Geno’s Italian Deli
