This is the first “Getting to Know” we’ve done where the photo that was sent to us (above) made us want to go for a walk immediately on that farm. So, let’s get to know Lindsey Reynolds, owner of Legacy Farms and vendor at Beech Bend Farmers Market!

Tell us a little about you. Where are you from, what are your hobbies and where did you start your career that led to the business?

My name is Lindsey Reynolds. My husband, Daniel, and I own and operate Legacy Farms in Hardyville, KY.  We offer a variety of retail cuts of beef and pork at Beech Bend Farmers Market. Even though we lived 20 miles apart  most of our lives, we met in a livestock management course at WKU and have been together ever since. From the start  both of us knew we wanted to farm. We started with a few cattle that we kept on our families’ farms, then leased and  eventually purchased farmland in Northern and Southern Hart County. I was very involved in livestock from a young age  through 4-H. At nine years old I started with a sheep project and that lead into 12 years of livestock and leadership  experience through 4-H and FFA. Daniel and I have raised cattle and hogs for many years, but a year and a half ago  decided to start selling retail meat from animals we raised as a way to diversify our farm and connect with consumers.

What is your earliest memory of your work, what got you interested in it?

When I was young my parents raised Holstein bottle calves for income. It was all my sister and I could do to carry calf bottles we were so little, but we helped my mom daily care for those animals. As I got older I always had responsibility in caring for some sort of animal whether it was cats, dogs, rabbits, cattle, or sheep. I plainly have a heart for tending livestock.

What is your favorite thing you sell?

When you visit me, chances are, I will be bragging about how awesome our pork burgers are! They are unseasoned ground ham and shoulder patties that make a perfect quick meal. Customers have loved the alternative flavor of this burger and the fact they can dress it up with their favorite in season produce!

Who are your influences in life and your work?

I am thankful my parents simply made me work hard and kept me involved with youth organizations such as 4-H. Looking back that is what formed the foundation for the individual I am today. I volunteer time back to 4-H and FFA whenever possible and enjoy judging livestock shows around the state every year. My in-laws have also given me a tremendous amount of support over the years and have taught me to enjoy simple things in life. Daniel, my husband, is a daily influence in life that challenges me to dream big and is my companion and support on life’s journey.

If you had to choose a last meal what would it be?

A medium-well ribeye, baked potato, roll and mac and cheese!

How important is local business collaboration to you?

Crucial, especially when dealing directly with agriculture. People have to eat, want fresh food, and want food transparency. Putting your hard earned dollars to use at places such Beech Bend Farmers Market is a way to achieve all of those. By stimulating commerce locally people also see what kind of direct impact they make in someone’s life. That is powerful.

What do you see for the future of your business in Bowling Green and serving South Central Kentucky?

Legacy Farms will continue to grow with Beech Bend Farmers Market and expand our consumer relationships in the area. We will continue to offer a stocked variety of pork cuts and very soon our farming operation will provide a constant beef supply as well. We also enjoy growing and preserving our own garden produce, so who knows!

What other locally owned businesses in town do you enjoy shopping, eating or patronizing?

Vendors at BBFM and Home Café.

If you want to help grow local Kentucky agriculture shop Beech Bend Farmers Market and look for Legacy Farms. Also, fan them on facebook.
