Think Little CSA: Under Pressure

Under Pressure may be one on my favorite songs of all time, so much so I even find myself humming it in the field to lighten stressful situations. It’s been quite appropriate: the excess rain has severely increased the weed and disease pressure, thrown off our planting schedule so now there is time pressure (as I write this, it’s 6pm and I’m having a strong cup of coffee to prepare for an all-night Fall squash plantingfest), and the deer are beginning to retrace their paths across the field. While digging carrots last week I was interrupted with a disgruntled snort, only to see a deer glaring at me because I was standing between her and the sweet corn.

The vegetables have been under pressure, no doubt, but there is still enough to go around. Heirloom tomatoes are coming out of the field, tote-upon-tote, for now and as our first planting a of cucurbits declines, the second planting is about to take off. Let’s hope for a dry, but not too dry, Summer from here on out. If you’re looking for produce from the farm throughout the week, you can find it on the Home Cafe menu, pick up a few extra heirloom tomatoes at Rian’s Fatted Calf, or find is downtown on Wednesday mornings with the CFM Mobile Market.

Even still, though we may not always like the hand we are dealt, we absolutely love what we do. Thank you all for the continuous support of our little farm venture. Our CSA is a real example of how a handful of people can dedicate a portion of their food dollars to eating local and support a small scale farm family in the process. Next week, we’ll be sending out a rough draft of the 2015-2016 agreement. We’ve made a few small changes and want to give everyone plenty of time to go over it.

All of that said, this week you’ll be getting: heirloom tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, sweet corn, eggplant, and green beans. There may be another item or two, we’ll just have to wait and see what the harvest brings tomorrow!

Take Care,
Jackson & Jordan Rolett
