Community Farmers Market is a volunteer driven market.  Over the last five years our farmers, artists, customers and community partners have benefited from the hard work and commitment of our loyal volunteers.  From putting out signs to working the market booth, representing the farmers and artists at public events and pursuing new opportunities to create better food access-our entire community benefits from their efforts.  Today, we would like to feature current volunteer Zach Vincent.

-How did you begin volunteering at CFM?

I began volunteering with CFM as part of a 3 month summer internship, when the internship was over I wanted to stay and the folks at CFM were gracious enough to allow me to do so.

-How is CFM different than other organizations?

“More than just a farmers market” is more than a slogan for CFM.  It truly is a community, made of people motivated by their passion and desire for doing good for others.  The selfless farmers and artisans who choose to do the right thing, every-time, who put their trust and faith in others is what sets CFM apart from other organizations.

-What have you learned while volunteering at CFM?
While volunteering at CFM. I have learned that farmers markets are not just a place where a group of farmers sell their produce. A lot of hard work, blood, sweat and sometimes tears go into making a farmers market work.  I have learned that farmers who sell at markets face many hurdles just to be able to bring their produce to market. I have learned so much from my experience with CFM, but most important, I learned to “trust people to do the right thing… and most of the time, they do.”
-How has CFM created new opportunities in your life?
Volunteering at Community Farmers Market has been a truly life-changing experience. Not only did the vendors and people involved with the market help me realize my passion for growing food, they gave me the confidence to do so. Being involved with community farmers market restored my faith in myself and in others. Becoming a volunteer at the market has created countless opportunities for me, including an opportunity to finish my masters degree in agriculture and food science. Had I not been involved as a volunteer for the market I would never have had the opportunity to do so. It is my hope that my research will assist small-scale producers navigate the many policies and processes unknown to most, involved in bringing food to market. I am eternally grateful to Community Farmers Market.
