Think Little CSA’s Week 16: Refrain

The theme for the week is refrain. Not as in keeping yourself from doing something, but the repetition at the end of a verse. The picture I chose to represent the theme is of the high-tunnels, taken by Michelle Howell. The picture is not glorified or staged, but looks as the tunnels usually do on a daily basis, particularly in the morning. As if every other morning I say to myself “Hey, there are the high-tunnels, let’s go pick stuff.” These have become our second home. Each week, we spend about half of our collective time in and around these things. Not only are the work weeks beginning to feel more alike, but also our social time. Again, we spent Friday evening with a guest producer, Jason and Mary Beth of Caught Wild salmon, exchanging fishing and farming stories and getting to know each other as businesses, but more importantly as people. If you have the opportunity, please come out to see them at Community Farmers Market tomorrow.

Carter, for those who do not know, had to bury his beloved hound this week. Refrain is one of the few words that seems fitting. Something deeply important had happened and there was space created to experience it, then it was time to move along, which he did gracefully. After dealing with the tragedy emotionally, he immediately found Avery and spent most of the rest of the day helping and playing with our little one as he usually does. Jordan pointed out that life can be hard on farm kids, but hard is not necessarily bad. The rest of the week I’ve watched Carter be with Avery and I’m very grateful they have each other.

Things are about to move forward again, though. More space is becoming available in the high-tunnels and our opportunities grow as the rows clear out for our CSAs. We’ll be putting down worm castings, tilling under the residual organic matter, and seeding in the middle of Winter, no less. Next week, you’ll be getting: a small bunch of kale or Swiss chard, mustard greens, a salad mix, turnips, radishes (maybe), a Fall squash, an onion, and garlic. We’ll let you know if there are any changes. See you Tuesday!

Take Care,
Jackson, Jordan, & Avery Rolett

Ps. We’ll have an important announcement for our members around the time of the Community Farmers Market CSA Fair on February 21st
