The SKY Farmers Market started in the summer of 2003 as a collaboration between farmers, business people, and other concerned people. We all wanted a place where local farmers could gather to market their products and Bowling Green’s citizens could gather to buy fresh, local produce.

We quickly decided that this market would be different by allowing only items grown or produced by the members to be sold. For our customers, it means that there is never a question where the produce is grown and the produce is always local and fresh – not “trucked in.” For the farmers, it means that there is never any competition with produce grown out-of-state or out-of-country.

We also wanted this market to be a place for social gatherings; a place where friends gather on Saturday mornings to visit over their weekly shopping.

It has been successful beyond our dreams! In 2010, we had 49 members representing 11 counties!

Would you like to join our market?

If so, take a look at our member documents. We start inspecting all members in early to mid March in preparation for our mid-April Opening Day. When you decide to join, please remember your farm/business must be inspected before you sell at the market, so give us enough time to arrange that. Two or more weeks would be helpful. We’ll call you to arrange a time for the inspection of your farm/business.

Please read carefully through the market guidelines and, if applicable, the HB 391 regulations before filling out your application.

Also, if you intend to do sampling of your product(s), you will need to attend a session on the state’s sampling rules. Your county extension office can help you with locations where it will be held. Learn more about sampling from the new UK agricultural extension guide, Best Practices for Sampling at Farmers Markets.

We are governed by a board of directors that has a farmer majority and most staff work is done by volunteers. If you are interested in joining the market or if you have any questions, please contact us.
