The “I Remember Her” 5K Run/Walk will take place at 8:30 a.m. This Saturday at Kereiakes Park.

This inspirational event raises awareness of breast cancer, provides hope to all facing the disease and serves as a fundraiser for the Tabitha M. Briggs Memorial Scholarship, a College Heights Foundation Fund at WKU.

Briggs was a WKU student who bravely fought breast cancer during her collegiate experience. The Franklin native succumbed to the disease in March 2005, nearly three months after earning her degree.

Established in 2010 by Briggs’ sorority sisters and friends, the scholarship serves two purposes: keeping her memory alive through the gift of education and raising public awareness of breast cancer support and prevention through healthy living.

More than 229,060 women and men in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, and more than 39,920 will die from the disease.

The race also features a fundraising element. All participants will receive one chance to win the third generation iPad for every $100 raised in the “Nationwide-Bobby Thomas Jr. Insurance Inc. FUNRacing Challenge.”

Registration is $25 for run/walk participants and $15 for “in-spirit” participants. Registration is available online at http://www.onestoprace.com (use Event Search to find “I Remember Her”) and closes April 11 or at 200 participants. Race shirts will not be available for those registering on or after March 29.
