Get To Know Your Local Farmers: O’Daniel Farms.

When we decided to look at the Vegan and Vegetarian foods recently, we knew it would be a task. To be honest, some businesses gave us a stare when we mentioned the feature. The great news, many realized that they needed to offer something and all have started to work on options.

The great thing we noticed with the three farmer’s markets about to open soon there was going to be a an opportunity to buy locally grown. That’s why last year when WKU Public Radio did their feature on O’Daniel Farm we were excited. If you know of a farm. After the WKU Public Radio story we went to O’Daniel Farm’s website and signed up for his emails.

Weekly, Joe O’Daniel sends out an email to everyone about what is available this week. This was from this past weeks email:

All of the following items are grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.  There are limited amounts on some items so first come first serve.

The deadline for ordering produce is 9am Thursday morning.  This deadline gives us ample time to harvest, wash, and package your orders.  Thanks for your consideration.
 
  
Directions to our farm:  From Bowling Green take Hwy 234 (Cemetery Rd.) East.  After  you go over I-65 clock 2.3 miles to Hill Road.  Turn left onto Hill Road and go .8 mile to our driveway on right. (976 Hill Rd.)
 
All of the following items are grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.  There are limited amounts on some items so first come first serve.
The following is a list of produce available this week.
Mesclun (spring mix)  $4.50/half lb Baby tender lettuce mixed with a little baby red kale, minuta, and miners lettuce.  Washed and spun dried. 
Arugula  $3.50/quarter lb    Washed and spun dried.
Salad Turnips $2/bunch   Beautiful tops
Red Cherry Radish  $2/bunch
Fresh dug Leeks $2/3
Jerusalem Artichoke or Sunchokes $3.50/half lb. or $6/lb.  Root crop. Can be used raw or cooked whole, diced, sliced, or julienne.  Try adding them to a roast as you would potatoes or carrots.  Can be roasted or steamed.  Juicy texture like water chestnuts when eaten raw.  35 calories per 3.5 ounces, 3.4 mg of iron per serving, 2.3 grams of protein per serving, .8grams of dietary fiber, 6% of the RDA for vitamin C, .1 grams of fat per serving, and 16.7 grams of carbohydrates per serving.   
Smooth Green Mustard Greens (Savannah)  $2.50/half lb. 
Brazing Mix $2.50/quarter lb  (A mix of baby tender mustard greens: Golden Frill, Ruby Streaks, Mizunia, and Baby Red Russian Kale.  Washed and spun dried.

Fresh cut herbs  $1.00/sandwich bag.  Choose from the following:   Basil, Dill, Flat Parsley,  Curly Parsley, Mint,  Chives,  Garlic Chives, Creeping Thyme,  and Cilantro.
 
Free range eggs  $4.00/doz  Due to limited supply in winter there is a $10 minimum produce and or meat order required and a 2 Dozen limit per week for eggs.

These cuts come from our pastured pork that receive grain and receive no antibiotics or growth hormones.  The sausage is made with no MSG.  The pigs were processed at Boone’s Butcher shop in Bardstown, Ky which is a USDA inspected facility.
 
Frozen Pastured Chickens     Dark meat package $4.83/lb (Contains 2 each Leg, Thigh, and Wings).  Stock package $2/lb (Contains 4 each Neck and Back.)

   
These chickens are meat birds that are raised on pasture but also eat grain that we provide.  These birds are antibiotic and hormone free.  Chickens raised with this method are tender and delicious.  They are in a nice vacuum packaging.  Processing is done at a USDA facility here in Warren County   

    

 
Grass finished Angus beef available by the package.  Our animals never eat any grain, and are never given any antibiotics or growth hormones.  The beef is processed at Boone’s Butcher Shop in Bardstown, KY  which is a USDA approved facility for retail sales.  All beef that we offer is frozen.
 
Grass-fed beef is lower in fat and calories, and higher in important vitamins such as beta-carotene and vitamin E, than beef finished on grain.  Grass-fed beef has 2-6 times more of the good fat called omega-3 fatty acids.
 
All prices per lb.  Roast come in approximately 3lb packages.  Steaks come 2 per package except round and sirloin which come 1 per package.
