Civil War 150: “Bowling Green’s Official Sesquicentennial Event.”

It really doesn’t matter if you are a Civil War buff or a fan of Bowling Green. If you have a passing interest in the Civil War or the City itself, you will want to mark your calendar for September 17th, 2011!

As the promo by the Convention and Vistor’s Bureau describes it:

“At 8 am, September 16, 1861, 5000 Confederate troops disembarked in Bowling Green, KY, from the 10 locomotives and 200 box cars confiscated in Nashville, TN by General Simon Bolivar Buckner.  The town of 3000 people found themselves suddenly thrown into the burgeoning conflict and the center of Kentucky’s Confederate Government.”

On September 17th, 2o11 150 years and a day later Bowling Green will honor and remember it’s history in the war that tore our state apart where many families had split allegiances.

The following is the schedule of events planned for the day:

7:30am-9:30am: Opening Ceremonies- Re-Enactment of the invasion and surrender of Bowling Green at the L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street.

10:00am-4:00pm: Confederate EncampmentRe-Enactment of Riverview’s munitions storage site. Free of charge at Riverview at Hobson Grove, 1100 West Main Avenue.

10:00am-1:00pm: Downtown Bowling Green Walking Tours Architectural self-guided walking tour of Bowling Green’s Civil War buildings with costumed docents at the locations along the path. Tour is free of charge and starts at The Presbyterian Church, 1003 State Street.

10:00am-4:00pm: Living History and Music Living History demonstrations that include blacksmithing, weaving, spinning, woodcarving, basket making and hands-on craft activities. Event is free of charge. There will also be an exhibit Opening: The Civil War and The Railroad at the L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street. The Exhibit is $10 for Adults/$8 for seniors and students (ages 10 & up).

10:00am-4:00pm: A Star in Each Flag: Conflict in Kentucky Featuring the regions largest Civil War Exhibit (Editorial Note: A must see), with hands on children’s activities that day. Also, Civil War Music & Dancing, Weaponry demonstration and more. Tour is free of charge on the campus of WKU’s Kentucky museum, 1 Big Red Way.

10:00am-2:00pm: Smoke Writing Tours Guided tour of soldiers’ signatures inside Lost River Cave. Tours at 10am and 2pm. $25 admission and space is limited so reserve ahead at 270-393-0077. Lost River Cave, 2818 Nashville Road.

EVENING EVENT

6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm & 7:30pm: Spirits of the Civil War Guided tour of nearby points of interest and “ghostly perspectives” of Civil War era “Spirits” performed by the Fountain Square Players. Tour is $10 for Adults and $8 for Seniors and Students (10 & up). Space is limited, call ahead for reservations at 270-782-3119. Tour will start at L&N Depot/Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street.
